Historical examples of overcoming a defensive wrestling style?

I would love some education about wrestling history.

What are some examples of an aggressive wrestler who gets stymied by a defensive wrestler and then (eventually) figures out how to overcome that wrestler?

The reason I ask is that, if I had to prepare to face a high-energy wrestler like Nolf, I'd look to see what Delgado, Dake, Martinez, et al. did. But if I (or Nolf) had to prepare to face a defensive wrestler like Delgado, to whose example would I look? (I know Mega and Taylor and Nolf already have overcome tons of defensive wrestlers, and are already experts, but I'm looking for examples in which someone at first is *losing* to a specific defensive wrestler, and then figures out how to win against that same defensive wrestler.)

OT: Post a positive personal experience you’ve had with a sports athlete or celebrity

This one's for a non-PSU positive personal experience you've had with a sports athlete or celebrity.

Lou Holtz

I used to work with a woman whose husband was a big Notre Dame fan. They were both Irish and when he would come in to visit her, often times he would spend more time talking Notre Dame football with me than the time he spent visited her. Rich was a great guy, always cheerful, salt-of-the-earth type of person with great respect for Joe and Penn State.

Well, it seemed like all at once his health took a dramatic turn for the worse. He had stomach cancer and he was having heart problems as well. I thought as a way to help lift his spirits I would write to Lou Holtz, who was Notre Dame’s coach at the time, and ask him if he could jot a quick, inspirational, encouraging message to Rich. I didn’t expect anything especially since it was in the midst of football season and I can’t even imagine the demands the head football coach of Notre Dame must face during football season. If anything, I hoped perhaps once the season was over, maybe then, if at all.

Later that same week I received a letter from Lou thanking me for thinking about Rich with a copy of a letter he wrote to Rich. I was shocked and it did a lot to pick up Rich’s spirit. On top of that, later in the year, still in football season, Lou sent a follow-up letter to Rich hoping he was doing better.

So I know there are those Lou Holtz detractors out there, but from my personal experience, he’s good with me.

"Average officiating" reigns yet again in B1G, especially the enforcement of passivity rules...errr

....actually I should say the complete non-enforcement of passivity rules in match after match after match including the Championship matches. How many stall calls were made against Sorenson, Brunson and Burak? Those three had maybe 30 seconds of non-passive, defense-only wrestling between them combined! I hope Cael makes it clear to the NCAA (the organizer of the National Tournament that the actual rules of wrestling need to be enforced as intended because PSU is hurt the most by these officials allowing wrestlers to blatantly abuse the passivity rules with impunity without fear of being penalized as they are supposed to be.).

157 seeding @ NCAAs

A little trickier as the top guys haven't all faced each other...

I'd go with

1 - Martinez (1 loss to Nolf that he avenged at B1Gs and a returning NCAA champ)
2 - Gantt (undefeated but didn't wrestle the top 3 guys this year)
3 - Nolf (1 loss to Imar but beat him earlier in the year)
4 - Miller (no losses (except a MFF?) didn't face other top 3
5 - Palacios (beat JoJo)
6 - Braschetta (returning AA with losses to Nolf and Gantt)
7 - JoJo (losses to Imar, Nolf, and Palacios)
8 - Murphy?

Thoughts? Corrections?

Looking ahead, returning B1G strength

here's my look at the returning B1G placeholders for next year. I'll leave it to others to predict which guys will changes weights next year, which guys will redshirt, etc. The year listed is what they will be next season. (I based that on the year listed in the B1G Championship brackets. I did find a few mistakes; didn't check each so apologies in advance if any are incorrect.)

enjoy

Interesting how many placers return. 197 is the weight that clears out the most. 133 and 165 are next in terms of weights that clear out a good bit. On the flip side, all placers return at 174, and 7 of 8 return at 125, 141, 149, and 157.

IMAR

I've been watching the Big Ten tourney on BTN2GO. Anyone else notice IMAR is not himself? He doesn't look gassed, he just doesn't look himself. Almost got pinned by Berger and then had to get a late 3rd period take down to squeak out a one point win against Murphy. I've heard rumors that he may have been banged up all year. Anyone know what is going on there?

My two cents...

125 - Nico gets it done this year, but not this weekend.
133 - Conaway gets 4th place, about where he ends up at the nationals.
141 - Jimmy needs to win his first match to get the confidence for his ticket. Its been awhile since he’s looked good and it will probably be another year.
149 - Who would have thought a year ago that Tshirt would be a 3 seed? I think Zane wins it, but MUCH more difficult than expected against a better field that has shown so far this season, including a Sorensen that will be content to wait this one out on a frustrated Zane. Regardless of a possible upset, Zane wins it all in 2 weeks.
157 - I can’t believe that IMar was 100% in their first match and I’m sure that IMar would be the last to admit his true condition. Regardless of the outcome, the big match will happen in 2 weeks.
165 - Morelli hasn’t shown much offense and staying close only gives hope, but I’m not very hopeful.
174 - I think this is a very tough field. Bo will win or loose the championship on ONE big move.
184 - MM punches his ticket if his body holds out. I think that’s all we can hope for at this time.
197 - Smack is finally 100% healthy this year and the great results will continue for our undefeated champ.
Hwt - Nevillis needs JUST 2 wins agains some tough dudes to move on. If all is true that he has progressed a lot since his first appearance 4 weeks ago, I think that makes 8.
