Interesting Facts and History of Penn State Wrestling

In 1899, Penn State students started Class Rush or Scraps to help initiate incoming students into college life. A Scrap was a brutal encounter between large groups of freshman and sophomores, resulting in many injuries, some even grave. Although this annual scuffle was not serious at first, while classes were small, as Penn State grew in size, this event became a major problem. Often each side had over a hundred members in the fray. In 1902, an agreement was reached between the two underclasses to dispense with what they called a barbarous rush and to substitute wrestling matches as a way of testing the relative strengths of the two classes. The first ever organized Penn State Wrestling event took place on 9/23/1902(Incidentally, my Birthday is 9/23). There were only three bouts: light, middle and heavyweight. The class that won two of the three was declared the winner. That first ever Penn State Wrestling event was won by the sophomores, 2-1.

Billy Stuart passes

Billy Stuart, who was a National Champ for Lehigh when they had that killer opening lineup --- Caruso/Peritore/Stuart (1/2/1 in the NCAAs), just passed away. Billy was an upper-body guy who was great fun to watch. The greatest high school match I ever saw was between Billy Stuart of Penn Charter and Augie Pantellas at the Haverford College Tournament in 1961. Augie was Upper Darby's greatest wrestler before Andy Matter and I'm not so sure Matter was better. As a sophomore, Augie was a state semi-finalist. Augie's family moved from UD during his junior year but didn't mention the fact to Upper Darby HS. He continued to wrestle for Upper Darby till they found out he didn't live there. He never wrestled again. He went on to be a world-class boxer.
At the Haverford College Tourney, Stuart and Pantellas were two studs firing on all cylinders. It ended up in a tie and a referee's decision that went to Stuart. I couldn't decide who should have won but it was unforgettable. I think I was in 7th grade.
Sometime in the 90s I was doing some programming at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media. I went outside to buy lunch at a street hot dog vendor. While standing in line, some guy behind me asked, 'Are you (my name)?' I said yes. He turned to his companion and said, "This was the greatest wrestler in Delaware County history." I pointed at the hot dog vendor and said, "No I wasn't, he was." The hot dog vendor was Augie Pantellas.
