TRUMP'S DEFAMATION LAWSUIT

Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the NYT, 4 of its journalists and CBS and has claimed damages of 10 billion dollars. No doubt there will be amendments adding other defendants as the case proceeds.
The current case of NYT v Sullivan, is the landmark 1964 decision of SCOTUS which established the burden of proof that a public official must maintain to establish a winning case. SCOTUS held that the public official must establish not only the usual elements of libel, that the article was false and defamatory, but also that the plaintiff must prove that the defendant had made the statements with "ACTUAL MALICE." Actual malice is defined as the defendant either knew the statements were false or recklessly disregarded that the statements might be false.

This case will prove to be riveting as it sets up the general rhetoric of Trump that the MSM is" fake news," with the MSM screaming that Trump is assaulting the First Amendment and Free Speech. The CBS portion of the case involves at least in part the recent Harris Interview that Trump and others have claimed was edited by CBS to aid and propel Harris to victory in the election.

Much popcorn is going to be consumed watching the progress of this case through the courts.

Ben Jones with some interesting stats and observations

I was never a big BJ fan. He always seemed snarky and was one of the guys that threw JoePa under a bus. But since getting let go from his gig, his independent thing seems to be working well.

But there are three interesting stats to keep in mind.

  1. Penn State has run 581 offensive plays this season, 103rd least in the nation. Meanwhile the Nittany Lions average 6.89 yards per play, the eighth-best per play average in the country. The mark of 6.89 yards per play is the best Penn State has posted over the previous eight seasons. [For some arbitrary comparison, Ohio State is 108th in offensive plays run, but 47th in yards per play.]
  2. Penn State is ranked fifth in the nation in completion percentage after finishing last season ranked 82nd. Since 2016, Penn State had finished in the Top 50 of completion percentage just twice: 2017 (9th) and 2022 (37th).
  3. A similar aside - Penn State averaged 5.09 yards per play against Ohio State this year after averaging 3.53 yards per play against the Buckeyes in 2023. In fact, Penn State has averaged more than five yards per play against Ohio State just three times in the past nine meetings.

On Local news last night OSU Student ticket price change possible

Heard on Dayton TV news that OSU Board is making proposal to raise the price for their ticket price for each game to $44 whether OOC or B1G. I also heard a rumor OSU wants to shrink the size of their student section to bring in more higher paying fans.

What is the cost of individual student tickets @ PSU and is there a difference in price of OOC and B1G games?

I could swear I saw…..

Purdue guilty of a holding violation as the players were getting off the plane.
No yellow flag anywhere.
These damn officials don’t see a thing. Let them travel from Indiana to Pennsylvania without a single penalty. Has to be some sort of conspiracy.

How’d I do?
Can I join the cult of bitchers and whiners?
Have a great weekend everybody.
Enjoy the games. Even that despised early start game at noon.

OT: Shiffrin gets number 98

She wins her 98th world cup race capturing the first slalom of the season. She competes here at Beaver Creek in a couple of weeks. Chances are she will be going for number 100 at that time. Pretty cool to see her get that at one of her local mountains. She is amazing.
