QB Offer: Luke Nickel

I'm no evaluator of talent and I know it's a highlight reel but I'm very impressed with this kids accuracy. Seems to hit a lot of receivers in mid-stride. Highlight reel is in the article.

Viagra shown to dramatically reduce heart attacks and deaths from all causes

A study that looked at a fifteen year history of 23,000 men who took viagra compared to over 40,000 that didn’t take it showed a 39% drop in deaths from all causes. That’s a huge improvement. Heart attacks, strokes, other cardiovascular events. And it appears the men that took more had better results.

BUT this was an observational study looking at past histories, not a double blind controlled study so don’t start chugging them down. It wasn’t a controlled study on just how many pills they took, how regularly they took them, or other issues like smoking, diet and exercise. I would add that most men who this are older, probably 60 or more, so that puts them at higher risk than the general population.

Bad TV/Good TV

OK to start a TV thread?

Anybody else watched the Last of Us? I had hopes since it's HBO but I've found it surprisingly dull so far. Maybe because it's based on a video game, not a story. It's like watching the long cut scenes at the beginning of a video game that you're trying to skip through so you can play the game.

And then the show itself feels like a platforming game -- now the pathway is blocked so they have to go into the dark building full of zombies to get to the other side!

And they killed off a bunch of interesting characters which was okay in Game of Thrones because they had a lot more interesting characters. But now we're left with 2 characters and neither one of them exhibits any interesting personality qualities. The tone is totally humorless. Even the fungus-zombies just look silly with shrooms coming out of their heads and their mouths. It has to get better, so I'll keep watching for now.

Meanwhile, good TV -- M Night Shyamalan's "Servant" (Apple) is creepy, sly and darkly funny. Filmed on Spruce Street in Philly. Nell Tiger Free (the increasingly evil nanny) is great, she's going to be a star.

Also there are two amazing Italian productions of Elena Ferrante novels that are incredibly good especially if you're interested in Italian culture and in particular Naples. "My Brilliant Friend" on HBO and "The Lying Lives of Adults" on Netflix. Italian productions, the filming and acting and locations and costumes are just gorgeous..

White Lotus is also great but everybody knows about that one.

Biden Admin, Dept of Interior report explains why gas prices are so high.

The report deals with the scheduling of drilling leases, particularly for offshore reserves (of which there has been exactly one thus far during Biden’s time in office) and how the White House plans to handle such auctions in the coming years. Tucked away in the lengthy document is a direct acknowledgment that energy prices would come down if leases were being offered on a normal schedule, but the administration is still considering a plan where the number of auctions might be… zero.

“New OCS [Outer Continental Shelf] oil and natural gas production … lowers the price consumers pay and producers receive.”

So Joe Biden’s own Interior Department (headed up by Deb Haaland) is admitting in official documentation that if they were holding these auctions as required by federal law, not only would the cost to consumers be lower, but it would drive down the profits of the energy companies that Biden is complaining about so loudly.

Pregame with Wino Friday

To those that will be around, this weekend. I will likely be pre-gaming at Doggies Friday around 4:00.
We are grabbing dinner at The Tavern at 6:00, and probably having a post-dinner drink at the Adam's Apple bar.
Post match festivities will be at Local Whiskey. No autographs will be signed at the BJC, so you'll have to catch me before or after.

FB Recruiting 2024 QB target Michael Van Buren recaps PSU visit

Quick little update here as I'm being told that Michael Van Buren's visit to campus yesterday went about as well as expected. Penn State is heavily pursuing him and it sounds like they vaulted near the top of his recruitment as he continues to say the right things, but it will be interesting to see what he says after he takes a few more visits as he plans to hit up Miami, Oklahoma and Oregon all before making a final decision.

As of now on PSU's board it sounds like they have Luke Kromenhoek at the top, but Van Buren is also right there, more like a 1A and 1B type situation rather than a 1 / 2. If he wanted to commit, I imagine the staff would easily say welcome aboard.
