Still don’t understand why JF punted from our own 42 on 4th and less than a yard in the 2nd Quarter.

We were running at will against Illinois and we could have easily picked up the first down on a hand off or even a QB sneak. I don’t think it's even a question if we would pick it up or not.

This seemed like the old Franklin being conservative with our old bad OL vs a good DL. But this was the total opposite.

Franklin said in the PC that he did it bc Illinois is a field position kind of team. But when you're absolutely destroying the other team up front you have to take that into consideration.

I hope that Franklin continues to be aggressive like he did vs WVU at the end of the 1st half bc that's what winning programs do, they play to win.

Feeling a lot better after Illinois 2024 than Illinois 2023

Last season was supposed to be special...the year we finally broke through. But there were red flags early, though many didn't want to see them. For example, we played Illinois in September and won by 17 behind a dominant defensive performance, but neither the running game nor the OL impressed. In fact, it was then that a lot of people began to wonder what happened to the Nick Singleton of 2022.

Last night, that Nick Singleton showed up again and brought his friend Kaytron with him. It's been a while since I've seen the OL fire off the ball that way against a decent conference team. I know Wormley went to the tent at one point and one other O-lineman did as well...think it was Nelson. Hope those guys are OK.

So we established the run, controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides, shut down their run, shut down their entire offense except for one early drive. You'll win a lot of games that way. This against a ranked 4-0 team.

I thought Drew was decent but not great. He missed a few throws. However, he didn't have to be the star. As Franklin said afterward, the running game was working and it would have been "stupid" to go away from it. Sooner or later, however, there will come a game where Drew has to live up to his billing. I hope he's up to the challenge. His odds are definitely better with a credible running game.

Flies in the ointment: the kicking game...felt bad for the kid...a few feet to the left on that last 40-yarder and we're probably not even having this conversation. Dumb penalties...it boils down to lack of discipline..,loved Franklin's comment at the half: we have to fix the penalties...the legitimate ones...not the bullshit ones. Haha! He was of course referring to the idiotic call against Rojas who was guilty of...playing football.

Also, not to nit-pick, but I'm not sure about the gimmicks with Warren and Beau in the shotgun. For one thing, everyone in the stadium knows what's coming from that look. I don't know, it might be just a little too cute. Warren is an All-American TE and Drew is a potential All-American QB...so why not let them play their positions.

Oh well, don't want to overlook UCLA next week, but as many predicted, a playoff spot for both teams may ride on the USC game at their place the following Saturday. And USC is very good. They almost beat Michigan at the Big House and really they should have won that game.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves: UCLA...UCLA...UCLA...

Postgame Thoughts

A win is a win, regardless of how ugly and/or boring.

Need a kicker. Significantly impacted the outcome. The spread was probably correct if we have a kicker with a pulse.

Drew was a tad off. Not sure if the zone and bend but don’t break strategy threw him off but he wasn’t great. Also oddly felt like AK and JF lost trust in him on third and fourth day. He needs to handle the happy feet a good bit better.

OL and RBs are the bread and butter of this squad. This is exactly what we all envisioned when Allen/Singleton stepped on campus. Let’s focus on this strength and build the offense around it.

Tyler Warren is the best TE in the country.

I’ve been skeptical of Tom Allen but man these seconds halves don’t lie. It’s almost like he has no strategy until he sees what the offense presents in the first quarter or two and then he adjusts. Love what he’s doing with Carter as the roaming hybrid spy - crazy closing speed. And he finally made the adjustment on the quick slant!

Zane Durant is that dude. Talk about dominant out there.

The DL offsides has to stop. Barnes needs to be spoken to. Comical at this point.

Finally, is this team good enough to beat OSU? Ehh, not right now that’s for sure.

PSU LA Alumni group meetup/tailgate for USC game info

Below was shared to those of us -- members of the LA Alumni group...

INFO ON NEXT SATURDAY VS USC:

We will be having a tailgate party at 901 Bar next Saturday, before AND after the game! All you PSU alums - young and less young, local and flying in, will be excited to hear that Champs Bar in State College is doing a BAR TAKEOVER of 901! That means they're sending a bunch of swag and slinging specialty Happy Valley drinks!

901 is located 1 mile from LA Memorial Coliseum, so there are a few easy options for getting to/from the game. It would be a 5 minute Lyft/Uber, a short walk to catch a bus and take it 4 stops (17 min total estimate), or a brisk 24 minute walk :) We'll be starting up at 901 at 9:01am! FYI they will be open at 8am, so if you'd like to get there early, go for it! Anyone and everyone is also welcome to come back to 901 after the game to keep the celebrations going after our win!

For you out of towners unfamiliar with LA, plan on leaving some extra time for traffic. Yes, even on Saturday. If you plan on taking a Lyft/Uber to the game, it will get pretty congested as you get closer to the stadium. Please plan accordingly.

Official 2024 Conference Realignment Thread

There's so much going on right now with conference realignment and the smaller conferences, figured making one big thread on all of this would be much easier.

So to recap so far.....

-- The Pac-12, which currently only consists of Oregon State and Washington State has added several new programs.
  • Boise State
  • Colorado State
  • Fresno State
  • Gonzaga (no football)
  • San Diego State
  • Utah State
-- UTEP has joined the Mountain West after leaving Conference USA.
-- Texas State turns down Mountain West to stay in Sun Belt.
-- Mountain West is talking with Tarleton State (FCS) about joining.

Need to change kickers NOW, before it costs them a game.

By now it's obvious. The moment is just too big for the kid, and that has to be the last time he kicks in game action.

This nearly cost Penn State the game tonight and against a team with a better passing game, they are 3-1, not 4-0.

Fact. Apologies to the kids family and friends on here, but some kids just can't handle the moment.

RIP Frank Fritz (American Pickers)

only 60. Apparently, he had a stroke two years ago. But he always seemed to be unhealthy. maybe part of the job of picking through crap most of his life.

To me, this was an oddly interesting TV series. I enjoyed watching it and ascribing a value. Although half to laugh that people storing gas and oil signs for 50 years gained just $50.

Anyway, too bad and way too young.

"Coolest Thing of the Week"

Good article about Big Ten coaches on the Hot Seat but scroll down to "Coolest Thing of the Week" and watch the Singleton clip.
As I said during the game, it's the most impressive play I've seen from him from beginning to end. Good publicity for Penn State too.
