Oct 2022 Letter from Casey Cunningham

Penn State Wrestling Fans!!!!!!!!

One more tournament and the 2021-2022 season is over and we head into the 2022-2023 collegiate season. As of Monday, official practice has now started so it is time to give an end of summer and preseason update as we begin a new year. Carter Starocci will be competing on October 21 and 22nd in the U23 World Championship in Spain to conclude the 2022 season. He has been training hard and will be ready to win a World title in about 1 week. This will conclude what was a very successful year for Penn State Wrestling and the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club.

Since the NCAA tournament we have had guys from either the PSU team or the NLWC competing in the Bill Farrell Memorial in Iowa, Senior and Junior Nationals in Las Vegas, Senior World Team trials in Iowa, Final X in Oklahoma, U23 and U20 World Team Trials in Ohio, Final X in New York City, Senior Pan American Championship in Mexico, the U20 Pan American Championship in Mexico, a senior ranking tournament in Africa, the U20 World Championship in Bulgaria, acclimation camp in Germany, the Senior World Championship in Serbia, and we finish it off in Spain with the U23 World Championship. If it is hard to follow all of that it is understandable as the summers are fast and furious for all of us when you throw in camps and training, but it is all part of what makes this program what it is. Along with the 5 NCAA champions this year we had 4 World Finalists and 9 World Team Members at all age groups. We are very grateful that all these men and women trust us to help them achieve their goals and we look forward to many more medals going forward.

As has been mentioned in the past summer workouts are optional but because we always have people getting ready for different freestyle events throughout the summer, we have some type of training going on pretty much year-round that most of our college guys can take advantage of. We have a group of very committed guys that just work even when it is not the requirement. We are very excited about the group that will be representing Penn State this year. There are many factors that go into having a successful season, but these guys have set themselves up to have a very fun year.

There are also some new rules in regard to redshirts. Redshirts are guys who are on the team and do everything the team does but are not allowed to represent the University at events. We cannot pay for or coach them in tournaments when they are redshirting. The new rule this year though is that redshirts can compete in 5 team events without losing their redshirt status. This could potentially be very helpful if you have starters that are banged up or get sick etc as a wrestler redshirting can still keep that status but yet compete for the team on 5 occasions. Another new rule for first year Freshmen redshirts is that they cannot compete in the first semester unless it is a scheduled team event and they are using one of their five possible opportunities to compete. In the past guys would drive to local open tournaments and get a bunch of matches in that first semester but that is no longer allowed as a committee of coaches and administrators have decided that it would help the athletes academically to not compete first semester. We have found that when guys are competing they actually do better in school but that is the rule so we will work with it.

In closing, we were receiving emails and calls about why our schedule had not been released but wait no longer as it is now out there for everyone to see. The faculty senate must approve the schedules at Penn State, but they cannot approve it until the Big Ten gives us their portion of our schedule so sometimes it takes a little longer than people would like. With that being said we are one month away from our first home Match with Lock Haven to kick of the 2022-2023 season. Lock Haven always comes ready to scrap so our guys are excited to get out there and let it fly again. A couple other schedule highlights are we have a dual event before Christmas again and have 2 Bryce Jordan Center Duals. The dual event before Christmas is not in Florida but rather in New Orleans this year and will feature a lot of great match ups so it would be great to see a bunch of PSU fans down there. After Christmas we get into our Big Ten schedule, and like mentioned above we will host 2 of those matches in the Bryce Jordan Center so that more people have an opportunity to watch our guys compete. We have many exciting guys to watch so let’s make sure we sell out both of those matches and continue our streak of Rec Hall sell outs. We appreciate all of you and look forward to seeing you all very soon. Thank you for the continued support.

GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY opinion on how to get Penn State back in the THICK of competing for a Big 10 title... and NOT just talking about it !!

Penn States current Strength and Conditioning philosophy is PRIMARILY about Strength, Speed, Agility and Conditioning... THAT might be a good philosophy for WR's RB's, TE's, LB's, DE's and DB's... BUT, we need a NEW philosophy for the OL's and DT's... a philosophy based on MUSCLE MASS, STRENGTH, SIZE, and POWER... and it MIGHT take a NEW S&C Coach to accomplish it quickly (i.e. Next Year) !!

Strength, speed, agility and conditioning are GREAT... BUT NOT for the OL and the DT's... THEY need to START as an athletic and agile underclassman... in the 6'4"-6'7" and 280lb. range... AND THEN... concentrate on MUSCLE MASS, STRENGTH, SIZE, and POWER... THEN coupled with their god given athletic agility... to end up as 320-330Lb. linemen, who can FORCE their WILL on the other side of the Line of scrimmage... or at LEAST come close !

I've seen for many years now that we are JUST not big and Powerful enough to compete with the SEC teams for example... AND OSU and now Michigan in the B1G... because THAT is THEIR philosophy ! WE always seem to be 20-40 lbs undersized, and SOME years have been able to hide it with depth and rotating players in and out... but THAT is more a BAND-Aide than a philosophy... WE SIMPLY need to get BIGGER on BOTH sides of the ball !!!!

Beaver Stadium Club Seat Experience Question

Hello, All. Headed back to PSU in November for a home football game for the first time in 10+ years. I have a question about the club seat and lounge experience? Is it nice? Worth it? Worth hanging out there pre game and halftime if the weather is questionable? Obviously a different experience than seats closer to the field but was wondering what people think about sitting in the club seat area. Thanks in advance!

OT: Yankees

No haters please. Let’s forget about pitching for a minute.
I have always felt that the teams that do well post season are the ones that offensively can get base hits. I feel like a team like the Yankees struggles in post season because they have too many sluggers. Jeter for example was the kind of offensive player that helps wins championships.

Clifford hurt?

So, I know he left the game saturday. But, I am looking at the early line and wondering if Clifford is questionable for Minnesota? Now, It could just be that the thought is they will just run in down our throats. Still, -4.5 at home at night? Makes me wonder. Probably will not get any answers tomorrow either.

OT: Wrestling Mats in Basement

Board members, I have recently moved into a new house with a mainly unfinished basement. As I have young children, I want to keep a large area (approx. 18' x 40') open for playing around, especially during the winter months. We have a ping pong table, and some other games, but I anticipate plenty of running around, balls being thrown and impromptu wrestling matches occurring. With this in mind, I want to cover the exposed concrete floors with some padding. I have found 2 used wrestling mats for sale. They are not in the best of shape, but these are simply meant to be played on for the next 5 years or so and provide some cost effective cushioning. The issue is my basement only has access from inside (not a walk out) and there is a pinch point due to doorways and walls that have made it difficult to maneuver items down into the basement unless completely taken apart (treadmill for example)... what are people's opinion on cutting the mats (approximately into 2 or 3 sections 5 or 6 feet in width when rolled up)... I would then have to tape them back together once laid down. I realize mats are taped together all the time, but this would be cutting an intact mat in half/thirds then taping those sections back together. Does anyone see any issue with this? Any recommendations for something else? I looked into the rubber squares that are used for gyms but it seems those are expensive and when kids run around on them they tend to come a part a lot. As this is a wrestling board, I figured I would ask for any input on my attempted plan?

PSU D vs McCarthy

I have not watched a lot of scUM this year but from what I can tell McCarthy is accurate, very mobile, makes good decisions and does not make many mistakes. Maybe I am heaping too much praise on him? I know he has had all day to pass.

Obviously we have to contain Corum. But I am concerned about McCarthy. I know he is young without any big game experience but he was a 5 star and seems to be playing well. He loves the tight end. Although I think Jacobs, King and Carter matchup well against their TE.

What does Diaz do to rattle McCarthy and get him out of his comfort zone? Our secondary is very good so do we blitz the LBs? Do you think we can get any pressure on him with our front 4?
