OT: Blehar's latest - Ganim is Desperate to be Relevant

LINK

The failure of Ganim to fact check the 1971 story became obvious when the story alleged that Paterno didn't believe Victim A because of all the good things Jerry Sandusky did for the community.

Sandusky did not start The Second Mile charity until 1977 and had no track record of good works up to that point.

This story had more holes than a block of Swiss cheese, but Ganim went forward with it and CNN published it and is standing by it. Moreover, CNN and Ganim seemingly couldn't have cared less regarding Victim A's molestation by a priest. This was another example of Ganim's pattern of putting the emphasis of her writing on demeaning Penn State officials instead of on the safety and welfare of children.

Maybe it's just me

Admittedly, I'm an old dog but has the use of proper language changed? Let me first say that I have a man crush of CJF. I think he's been perfect for our program. He's sharp, compassionate and articulate which is what surprises me. Several times I've heard him say, "Me and my..." Back in my day we were taught to always put others first, "The team and I." Like I said, I'm and old dog and maybe the language has changed and this is acceptable. I've heard many other public figures speaking this way. It just strikes me the same as finger nails on the blackboard. Maybe the days of using proper language have come and went.

OT: Another Maine Trip & Questions

@Art, sorry for continually posting Maine questions!

I'll heading up with the family for another Maine vacation within the next few weeks. We'll be spending a few days in Bar Harbor before heading down to Portland for the bulk of the trip. There'll be stops in Freeport, Wells, and other stops in between.

Santa came a bit early with a Canon EOS Rebel t6 too; I'll be locked & loaded for good shooting if I can get the hang of it soon. Also, by the grace of God, shellfish allergy is no longer an issue too. Game on for lobster--I hope they have enough.

So, two questions today:

  • Has anyone done a Lucky Catch Cruises lobstering trip out of Portland? It seems to get great TripAdvisor reviews and we're considering it. I tried to book a moose tour but don't want to drive 3 hours through the early morning or late night to do it this time.
  • What place(s) has the best traditional Maine lobster roll? Because of the shellfish issue I never looked into good seafood spots. I love downtown Portland but it has its share of tourist traps (DiMillo's) and tchotchke shops. I've heard Evantide is good and plan to go there at some point for oysters. That said, I'd prefer a lobster roll well-liked by locals at a hole-in-the-wall place somewhere. We'll be going to Becky's too and I hear they have some great seafood, so there's always that.
That's all, folks.

Rutgers well positioned for success in 2017

We've got enough talent to WIN the Big Ten, though I think we'll end up with 7 Wins, as we won't be able to execute on a level of a Penn State or Ohio State, though I like our chances to HAMMER Michigan, especially after last years monstrosity.
  • Jerry Kill, former Minnesota HC, is our OC, and has designed an offensive juggernaut
  • Kyle Bolin is the QB, and seems poised to throw for 3K+ Yards
  • Kemoko Turay, who reminds me of Jason Pierre Paul, has returned from injury and is back to 100%. He should be one of the best ends in college football
  • Heisman Candidate Janarion Grant has returned from injury, and is thankfully back to 100%. He is the best Kick Returner in the country, and should have a big year as a wide receiver as well
  • The WR corp adds a plethora of Jersey Speed, with incoming wide receivers Everett Wormley, who reminds me of Dwayne Jarrett of USC, Bo Melton, who reminds me of Sammy Watkins, and Hunter Hayek, who reminds me of Hunter Renfrow
  • The Tight End is Jerome Washington, who reminds me of Miami First Round Pick David Njoku
  • Raheem Blackshear is an All Purpose Player who reminds me of Reggie Bush
  • Unlike prior seasons, the Offensive and Defensive Lines are now Big Ten Competitive
  • The Linebackers are lead by Butkus award candidate Deonte Roberts
  • The secondary, which could be the best in the country, is led by outstanding All American Candidate cover corner Blessaun Austin

No team has added as much incremental talent as Rutgers. After a productive offseason, Rutgers is poised to do big things, size of which will depend on our ability to execute. The talent is there, the depth is there, the coaching is there, now its time for the team to make it happen! We find out right away, with Washington coming to town tomorrow, so there's nowhere to run. College Football Beware!

Official PSU - Pitt Game Thread

We Are ...

- looking forward to watching the Nittany Lions put a smack-down on the Panthers
- dubious that Pitt's troubles last week were due to their going vanilla and hiding their game plan
- doubtful that even if they did hide a lot of their game plan last week that it will make much of a difference
- wondering if PSU will exceed 48 points in today's game
- question whether Pitt will score 14 points in today's game
- glad to be rooting for the Blue & White

... Penn State

(I've been off the board all day. Give me some time to clean up all the Reports that I just saw.)

OT: At Risk of this Thread Getting Banished to the Test Board

I thought I would present an op-ed just published by Eric Barron.

Richard Spencer is not welcome to speak at Penn State
August 22, 2017

In light of the recent violence and tragedy in Charlottesville, Penn State has evaluated a request for Richard Spencer, who is president of the National Policy Institute, to speak on the University Park campus this fall.

I disagree profoundly with the content that has been presented publicly about this speaker's views which are abhorrent and contradictory to our University’s values. There is no place for hatred, bigotry or racism in our society and on our campuses.

As stated last week, Penn State is an institution of higher education, and fully supports the right of free speech and encourages its expression in thoughtful and respectful ways, even when we strongly disagree with the opinions expressed. But the First Amendment does not require our University to risk imminent violence.

After critical assessment by campus police, in consultation with state and federal law enforcement officials, we have determined that Mr. Spencer is not welcome on our campus, as this event at this time presents a major security risk to students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus. It is the likelihood of disruption and violence, not the content, however odious, that drives our decision.

As we enter the new semester with a national climate of great uncertainty, Penn State continues to foster an inclusive climate for all races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, genders and other differences. Our University strives to create an environment where everyone can teach, learn and live in an atmosphere of safety and mutual respect.

Eric J. Barron

Penn State President

It would be nice if we could discuss this without it getting political but I doubt it. Just that this heavily pertains to Penn State and I think we can all agree that banning free speech, especially at a public University, even if it "risks imminent violence" (wouldn't nearly every speech risk this? How does one define imminent or risk for that matter?) is a very, very slippery slope.

Penn State suing 2nd Mile and Jack Raykovitz

How many years too late? But still a good step.

Penn State files paperwork to sue The Second Mile
BY LORI FALCE

SEPTEMBER 05, 2017 12:05 AM

For more than five years, as Penn State’s name is repeatedly linked to law suits involving Jerry Sandusky, some people have asked one question.

What about The Second Mile?

That question may have started to be answered.

On Friday, attorneys for Penn State filed paperwork to take the first steps in a suit against the defunct charity and former executive director Jack Raykovitz. The specifics of what the university is suing for and why are not yet detailed. The Second Mile was Sandusky’s charity for at-risk youth. Sandusky was convicted of 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse against young boys from the charity. He is serving 30 to 60 years in state prison, but is in the midst of a Post-conviction Collateral Relief Act petition seeking a new trial or dismissal of charges.

Meanwhile, Penn State has picked up a lot of bills because of the criminal case, as well as the many other civil issues and other consequences that have spidered out from it.

The university paid $93 million in settlements to 32 claimants. There was the $60 million penalty under the NCAA sanctions, which were settled, making the final figure $48 million to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and another $12 million that stayed in-house at Penn State but dedicated to research and programming to address child maltreatment. Then there was the $8 million for the Freeh report, $2.4 million in Clery Act penalties and yet another $12.3 million that was awarded to former assistant coach Mike McQueary for his whistleblower suit.

And there are legal fees — lots and lots of legal fees.

Former FBI director Louis Freeh, in a blistering statement released after former Penn State president Graham Spanier’s conviction in March, put the total cost of the Sandusky incident at over a quart of a billion dollars

The praecipe for a writ of summons against the charity was not unexpected. Alexander Bilius, the Saul Ewing attorney who signed the paperwork, previously submitted responses to the court suggesting that such a suit would be forthcoming.

“The university hereby states that in addition to filing claims for indemnification against The Second Mile and/or its insurers, the university also may file other claims against those entities and/or against officers or members of the board of directors. ... The university reserves all rights with respect to all of the claims it may file against these entities and individuals,” Bilus told the court in 2016.

Why did he make that statement? Penn State was submitting a response to a petition of dissolution for the charity. The court acted on that in March 2016, putting all assets in the hands of the Office of the Attorney General, which said the funds came in at about $750,000.

The university followed up the statement with a proof of claims filed in July 2016.

2017 World Championships Thread

Friends, tomorrow starts the entire pinnacle of our sport on non-Olympic years.
Schedule of wrestlers by day: Login to view embedded media Wrestling starts at 3:00AM CT (which is 4:00ET for ya'll in PA, right?) each day. First sessions will end between 9:00/10:00, Finals beginning at 12:30PM CT the first day, and 11:30AM (12:30PM ET) the rest of the days.
While not optimal timing, it could be a hell of a lot worse. I will try to PBP as much as I can, but for some reason, my school doesn't realize that this week is the World Championships, and I have to start showing up at 8:00AM to clean the office/gym/etc. However, that shouldn't stop me from watching/PBPing except for certain occasions (IE: System-Wide Mass, they frown upon yelling expletives and confirming falls during communion for some odd reason.)

We have a heck of a team out in France. Tons of storylines to buy into: Can Helen win again? Will other younger stars on the Women's team have a breakout year? The mix of veterans/youngins on the Greco team could spell similar success. Freestyle brings what might be our strongest team in quite a while. Obviously as PSU fans, Manville and Retherford spark interest. Iowans have Gilman. Ohio State has Snyder and Stieber. Jammen (depending on the day and what narrative he's pushing) has Burroughs and Green. There's college ties, but also, USA ties.

I don't know, man. I'm excited. This, Fargo, and NCAA's are the 3 biggest events of the year in my world. Thought I'd start the thread for this, since there isn't an 'official' one, yet.
