A rambling, personal post (below) inspired by some others' recent posts about "Penn State arrogance"...

I used to be a Penn State fan. I have great dad-son memories of going to Penn State games in the 1970's. "Ha! Look at that sweathshirt, son: 'Woody is a Pecker'!" (as wearer bent backwards to expose it, pre-game, for the GoodYear blimp. Good times.

I collected those blue and white game slogan buttons... Never missed that Sunday morning replay show... etc.

I liked the stadium as it was back then - much better than today. You could see the mountains better, hear the band... what was it then, cap. = 70,000? To me, it's too big and corporate and over-produced now. I like MAC games now (no, I'm serious) in a Rocky Balboa kinda way. Less-recruited players playing for small crowds at home, and trying to beat the big money, marquis teams away.

I went away to Miami, FL for college, and could not have been more excited to watch the Howard Schnellenberger/Jim Kelly-led Hurricanes play - and upset - Penn State in 1981. My Dad laughed at the Hurricanes all week before the game when I told him that they looked pretty good. As time expired, I tried calling him collect from the Orange Bowl - but he was too mad to take the call. That's when I started to understand the general arrogance (at that time) of the Penn State fanbase. I can still hear Keith Jackson's call of the game.

Went to Kent State for grad school in 1985. Been a fan (one of hundreds) of the Golden Flashes ever since. I like the Kent-Penn State games. Always hoping for a miracle. Darn near swallowed my tongue when Kent went up 10-0 in 2003 (before losing solidly).

Thanks in part to Toledo ("Holy Toledo!" Dad didn't take that call either.) and Ohio U., i think Penn State fans, in general, are less arrogant anymore - even almost decent to be around at BBQ's, etc. I see informed, respectful online posts and media reports about future MAC opponents... respectful postgame analyses. Neat!

I'll be rooting for Akron in two weeks - at least to keep it close - while Kent is whooping on Clemson.

Thankfully with my kids' HS football schedules neither of those contests were options for me... though with patience and persistence, I was able to find a Blue (preferred) RV parking for Rutgers for $150... but there are more than a couple Nittwits listing theirs for $4/$500 ...

Makes me not regret (so much) my son's recent decision to stiff-arm the prospect/reality of out-of-state PSU tuition and attend college elsewhere...

Can't deny the odor of "country club" at PSU was always there... but, to me, the stench is turning me off to what should otherwise be a great way to spend a fall afternoon with family and friends... this is the "culture problem" that has been turning me, an alumnus, off to things Penn State...

It's for my son. He has an obsession with them. Don't ask me why but he does. He is 11 years old, and I have bought probably over 30 vacuums for him since he was 5 years old. Older, newer, it doesn't matter. But every day he drives me nuts about constantly getting him one. He loves putting them together, connecting the different hoses, etc...

forgot about that Dolphins game, amazing.

On the eastern shore of Lake Michigan before meeting friends in the city the following day for lunch. I don't want to go too far north but would appreciate any suggestions for a town where my wife and I can chill and enjoy some food and beverage at the shore.

I built a paver patio where I can put my grill and big green egg smoker. My wife went to a winery and was able to buy an old barrel that was used for Bourbon and wine. I am using it as a pub table outside by the grill. She also got me 2 wooden high chairs to go with it. I have sanded the chairs and put a urethane coating on them to get them through the elements.

My question is, should I do anything similar to the barrel. I have done some research and it seems that there's everything from "leave it, it will naturally weather" to "sand it down and seal it". I don't plan on leaving it outside all winter long. I've even been debating going and getting a grill cover to toss on it just when I'm not out there or we don't have people over. I will put it away in late fall and pull it back out in the spring, but it is sitting directly in the sun and getting hit with water from rain and the sprinklers in the yard.

some of the same documents (including some/all of the Freeh report docs) will be the subject of motions practice before the various courts. In the Paterno and Spanier cases there are defamation claims that depend in part for their success on the Plaintiff showing that the Freeh docs do not support the Freeh Report.

As I said yesterday in the thread on the litigation, to the extent the Freeh docs are not supportive of the narrative, AND to the extent there are other things, not in the Freeh report, which show the narrative to be false, that is good evidence and ought to be admissible at a trial of the defamation claims. Moreover, in defamation cases, one of the most important aspects of the remedy of trial is that the injured Plaintiff gets to put on the evidence which shows the TRUTH of the matter.

Suppose there is an email or other communication from CSS to the DPW/CYS/Raykovitz. Or notes of a conversation, or eye/ear witness to the communication or some other chunk of evidence that definitively shows the premise of the Freeh Report is bunk. Not only is that good evidence at trial, I would argue that it can neither be considered ACP NOR subject to some sort of gag order which keeps it from the public.

Remember, somebody at PSU or in the Freeh Group made a conscious decision to give Freeh's conclusions the widest possible play--big news conference in Philly with mobile news trucks backed up around the block, national TV audience, etc. (Last I checked, PSU is headquartered in State College, not Philly.) If that presser was full of lies and defamatory exaggerations, then the correction has to be just as widely publicized or it does not serve the purpose of mitigating the damage.

A WORD OF CAUTION: many of you have noticed that the press often gets it wrong when writing about legal matters. This is because the reporters are not lawyers, they are trying to simplify the matter to an eighth grade reading level, and they do not care. They also do not have full access to the info, and are usually getting whispers outside of court from interested parties. My analysis suffers from a lack of full access to the court files for sure.

We are poised to get some further truth this year, I believe.
