2017 NCAAs Session I Thread

Not great math from me! He will have to beat loser of Ramos/Amine though, not sure that's a great outcome for him.
yes sir, made it quite a bit tougher. But we would take 6 wins in a row from him.

Good round for you. Biggest surprise for me was Hall didn't get bonus.

(sorry for the edit, but I basically repeated my prior post)

8-0 with 8 bonus points. Looks like this one will go down to the last few matches. I figured 14-15 so pleasantly surprised

Crutchmers loss was enormous. Okie St was bonusing well but having a scoring hole at 174 will loom.

Ohio St had 125 & 165 lose as well, so we dodged unforeseen points there.

PSU in good shape right now.

Did Da Ohiya State have a cpl guys lose??

Biggest surprise for me was Hall didn't get bonus.

Hall did not wrestle a smart, tactical match. He gave up an esc on the edge with 2 sec. left in a period. And then he allowed his opponent to escape without a lot of resistance when his RT was at 55 sec. I wasn't worried that he would lose -- just wish he had been a little more aware of the circumstances.

PSU matches tonight:

141: Gulibon vs. #4 seed Matt Kolodzik (Princeton)

149: ZPain vs. Jordan Laster (Princeton)

157: Nolf vs. Victor Lopez (Bucknell)

165: Joseph vs. Branson Ashworth (Wyoming)

174: Mark Hall vs. Jadaen Bernstein (Navy)

184: Nickal vs. Steven Schneider (Binghamton)

197: Cutch vs. Frank Mattiace (Penn)

285: Nevills vs. William Miller (Edinboro)

Sounds like a 16-0 Thursday to me.

Thanks, am at baseball and can't watch, so details are appreciated.

So, experts: thoughts on round 1?

Met or exceeded expectations?

I'm not an expert but my thoughts:

PSU still have everyone in winners bracket = huge.

You can't win NCAAs on Thursday but you can sure lose them on Thursday.

Joseph & Hall & Nevills had tough unseeded kids and figured out how to win

Jimmy Gulibon !!!!

Hats off to McCutcheon for wrestling smart and get his team an extra two team points w re neutral fall.

Crutchmer losing is a huge hole. Yes, he can still AA, but that's a tough path to take.
Especially w Piccinninni & Rogers managing falls for them.

tOSU 125 & 165 didn't give them any freakish points so that's encouraging for PSU.

PSU sets themselves up nicely heading into tonight. Long way to go though.

Ok St got a little more bonus than I was hoping for but the Crutchmer loss helped offset that a bit.
Would have liked 1 more bonus point between Zain, Nolf and Bo but Jimmy and Cutch offset that and then some.
Ohio St did right about what I expected.

All in all, not too shabby!

Bo already majored the Binghamton kid in the dual, 18-7.

Cutch beat the Penn kid at Keystone Tourney, 3-1.

197: Cutch vs. Frank Mattiace (Penn)
Cutch loses 4-5
Wrestled once and Cutch won 3-1 in Nov 2016
Cutch is 13-2 against common opponents
Frank is 12-4 against common opponents

That prediction kind of surprises me. The two wrestled in late Nov of this season in the finals of the Keystone Classic. It was a tight match. Cutch got a late TD to win the title. I'd expect that head-to-head would be a bigger factor in predicting results. It's likely to be a close match -- that's just how Cutch wrestles (today's R1 results not withstanding), and Mattiace wrestles similarly.

184: Nickal vs. Steven Schneider (Binghamton)
Bo wins 18-3 TF
Wrestled twice. Bo MD in December and Decision prior
Bo is 17-3 against common opponents
Steven is 14-9 against common opponents

Here I'll argue the opposite perspective. While Bo did major Schneider in Dec. of this season, a TF is well within reach. Bo defeated him 18-7, and had 2:05 in RT. Bo had 8 TDs in the match. His only trouble was in finding a way to tilt Schneider. I may be looking at this thru blue-white glasses, but it would surprise me if Bo did not rack up back points in this match. Schneider was ranked #13 at the time of the match, which didn't seem to phase Bo a bit.

Thanks for running that, Centex. Most would say that Jimmy has the toughest match, and that Cutch's match could go either way.

I predict bonus points for PSU in the 6 remaining matches, though perhaps that's a stretch in Nevill's match (not so much an issue of the match, but just that bonus points @ 285 aren't all that common).

Kolodzik is a tough matchup for Jimmy, but who knows. He looked really at ease this afternoon, and that's usually when he wrestles his best.

Sure would be nice to duplicate this morning's 8-0 record.

The Cutch result surprised me as well. I believe he wins by 4. Even though they had a close match in November, as you state, you have to remember that Matt just got done losing the 184 job to Bo, and was in the process of remaking his body a bit and gaining strength. If Matt beats him in November by 2, then I think he wins by at least 4 now. A bit of change and adjustment from wrestling 184 bodies to 197.

These have Nolf and Bo TF, but I'm going with 1 pinfall and one TF
These have Zain MD, but this will be TF at a minimum
With the 3 first time NCAAers (Joseph, Hall, Nevills), I believe 2 of three can MD with Dec for the other
For Jimmy, this is a tough match. He looked like a monster today. Hoping he can use that confidence to leverage a win. Wouldn't surprise me, and HR would blow up if that happened.

I'm calling 7-1, with 1 Pin, 2 TF, 2 MD, and 2 Dec

I agree about Cutch. He is a bigger wrestler now then back then and is a much better 197 pound wrestler with a season at the weight. I would think the gap between now and then would have only widened.

Not that familiar with Kolodzik...does Jimmy match up well against him? (i.e., does he have good length?...good scrambler?...etc...).

Kolodzik is very tough. Not super prolific offensively, but very fundamentally sound and difficult to score upon. Has wins this season over Ashnault (4-3), Luke Pletcher (9-3), McCrystal (8-6 in OT), Javier Gasca (16-0 TF), and two close wins over Randy Cruz. Only loses were to Jack (1-0) and McKenna (4-0).
