2018 Recruiting Thread

New England Patriots: Source tells FootballScoop Greg Schiano is planning to bring University of Minnesota defensive coordinator Robb Smith with him to the Patriots. Smith served on Schiano’s staff at Rutgers and with the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Allow me to take a moment to make this PSA: I want to thank the contributors to this and similar threads for those of us who don't have the time to invest in the research to gather this info. Absolutely love it. It's information like this and the often accompanying humor that often has my wife saying "really, you have to watch, read and follow PSU Football all year?!" welllll.... yes. Duh.

Tom Luginbill was on the sideline to see Penn State up close in the Fiesta Bowl. It allowed him to see where the program has made strides and where it might still have some room to improve.

He's not just a sideline reporter, either; Luginbill is the national recruiting director at ESPN, and he spent some time shedding some light on the Lions and other recruiting classes on Monday.

On the class overall, Luginbill said:

"Look at where some of their top players are in this class. Jayson Oweh, Micah Parsons, two defensive ends, a defensive tackle in P.J. Mustipher. You go on the offensive line, you've got Fredrick Scruggs at offensive guard. They've got an offensive tackle. They've added more into the tight end range because they know they're going to have losses at that position.

"So I'm really impressed with how they filled their needs, the caliber of player that they're adding to the trenches, I think is going to make them a team that's going to be a formidable contender for a Big Ten Championship and a college football playoff contender on a consistent, sustained basis going forward."

Javontae Jean-Baptiste received a few CB's today to OSU. No idea if related to Walker's decision. Maybe they just made the "committable" offer to him.

Appears Brian Dohn CBed SAB to Marshall.
Reading between the lines, it seems as though SAB wasn’t quite able to dig himself out academically to get into Penn State and choosing to go somewhere that won’t require that he go down the JUCO route.

Definitely a bummer for a kid who really, really seemed to want to be a Nittany Lion.

Yeah, he was totally into being at PSU. He did a lot, imo, into getting Parsons here. I'm sorry that he's not going to be where he really wants to be but if he can channel his enthusiasm, he'll do fine wherever he decides to go.

Lordy that boy George is looking beastly here

What's different about Marshall when it comes to academics? Is it because they aren't in a P5 conference?
I don’t think it’s as much of a difference in qualifying. I think the situation (speculating, of course) is that Penn State and probably other P5 schools weren’t going to have him sign a LOI and assume the risk of being on the hook if he ends up not qualifying. G5 schools like Marshall - or Western Michigan in the case of Antwan Reed - are probably a little more comfortable with letting him sign and assuming the risk. There might be issues with actually getting him admitted to the school, as well, where we might see clear differences between Penn State and Marshall.

I don’t believe that Fitz has ever been wrong when he has picked a kid to go PSU (as his final CB pick)

There have been kids he’s picked to other schools and the kid ended up at PSU. Like Zack Kuntz, who fitz CBd to Notre Dame

I'm sure this has been answered before, but when is Walker supposed to make a decision?

He said he will let the team of his choice know on Monday (yesterday). He will formally sign on Wednesday just after 11am
I take that to mean he will silently tell CJF if it is PSU and expects him to keep it quiet until he announces on Wednesday.

What I imagine is one of Walker's high school assistant coaches is a long time OZone poster. Sounds like he's recruiting Walker for Ohio State. He's been posting about Walker's recruitment for over a year.

How many academic all americans does OSU have vs PSU? (m)

Sorry if this was already asked. I crawled thru several pages and didn't see anything. Back in Dec. they had the new soft recruiting deadline where schools encouraged all their players to fax in their commits. Every talking head was on the radio talking about their school recruiting rankings and such. But they all said things can change in Feb for final signing period. I don't understand the difference and why there is zero buzz for now in Feb vs Dec. And will there be new recruiting lists based on final numbers or do we go by the ones in Dec where PSU ended up around 5 on various lists? Feb 3 was always a crazy exciting day that used to take Tom's board down. But now it seems everything is sprinkled in?

There was an early signing period and the vast majority of kids are already locked in. PSU already officially signed 22 kids as an example. That day in December is the new day to watch. There are still a few kids left that everyone is fighting over so the final rankings will change, but not signficantly.

You are correct Judge:
Ken Pryor is a coach at North Point High School, Waldorf, MD -- that is Rasheed's HS

I count SAB as a Penn Stater. He lived and breathed being part of the 2018 class as long as he could. He was a great recruiter and will be remembered well for his time with the Blue and Whiters.

Best of luck SAB!

Petit-Frere is trending heavily to OSU right now.

Have to imagine tomorrow will be:

PSU - Walker
OSU - NPF
Michigan - lol

PSU and OSU both fill their biggest position of need, Michigan hilariously strikes out again, and the rich get richer.
Harbuagh seen lobbying hard at the BIG offices for them to make the MSU players free agents! Then maybe he can get some quality recruits, that may potentially beat out LOL!!!
