2021 Recruiting Class Thread

Not sure how it wasn't mentioned but Ryan cast a FC for Buddin and White yesterday to PSU!

FC's Ryan has made for PSU that are not yet committed: White, Buddin, Warren, Prather, Rucci.

Ryan Snider??

Just curious about WR, for anyone who can opine - is it likely that the staff hopes for 3 more WRs in this class and they hope those three will be Lonnie White, Kaden Prather and Thornton? Logic would say White commits soon, which puts some pressure on Prather to lock up his spot and he commits and then we wait as long as necessary to get Thornton's committment. Does this seem plausible?

Ranking the Contenders: Brock Bowers

2. PENN STATE
There is a lot going for Penn State as well. Bowers had a great time with assistant coach Tyler Bowen during his visit there, he had a chance to sit and talk over dinner with
Pat Freiermuth and other Nittany Lions and he seemed to like the atmosphere. Again, Bowers is not opposed to small-town living, so State College is appealing to him, and the four-star really respects the tight end tradition at Penn State and how much the offense has utilized that position recently.

White is probably more of an athlete. I don’t think he’s taking Thornton, Prather, or Farooq’s spots if they want them.

Nice to read Christian Veilleux' remarks about Coach Ciarrocca.

“It was great, really enjoyed it,” he said. “I really spent the whole day with coach Ciarrocca. We watched film, went over his ideas, his way of coaching. He just really tried to show me who he was as a coach and a person. I really enjoyed that. Watching the film with him was great, because you could just see how he thinks offensively.”

Listening to the 247 podcast and they talked a bit about the current landscape of recruiting nationally. Most amazing to me - the B1G has 9 teams currently ranked in the Top 25:

1. Ohio State (1)
2. Iowa (7)
3. Michigan (8)
4. Minnesota (9)
5. Penn State (14)
6. Wisconsin (15)
7. Maryland (17)
8. Rutgers (19)
9. Michigan State (22)

The SEC has four right now (Bama is ranked 55), same for the ACC (noting Clemson is 5th nationally). Obviously, lots of players haven't made their moves and this will certainly change a lot (especially once lockdown restrictions are lifted and kids can visit schools again), but I think this demonstrates how tough the B1G is and will continue to be. Other observations were USC at 7 (with 8/10 recruits from CA, 2 from Texas), Tennessee at 2 (noting they have 15 recruits which helps their low average star rating), and North Carolina at 3 (they have 14 commits and ALL are from North Carolina). Penn State's average star rating is lowered by the non-ranking of kickers, which is silly given how much of a game depends on kickoffs, punts, extra points, and field goals.

Najee Story, DE from Solon, Ohio verbal to NWstern

I know PSU offered. Was he a key target for PSU?

He’s the kid who had a pretty bad injury a season or two ago, if I remember correctly. That is probably why some bigger programs backed off a bit until they could reevaluate.

I look more at the average star rating and ranking the B10 teams that way is not as favorable to them. B10 teams putting together better classes than their norms, but won’t be in top 15-20 in average star rating when the cycle concludes. Some likely won’t be top 25-30 based on average quality.

Hopefully when a few of CJF’s top targets make their minds up, such as Rucci, it will push the PSU class over the .90 average....

Exactly.

At this stage, only Ohio State (by a sizeable margin) and Michigan (just barely) have higher averages than us.

We're not going to catch Ohio State in any way, shape, or form. Not only is their class large, but it's loaded.

However, if we get Rucci, Gilliam, Warren, etc. -- to say nothing about Thornton, one of McMillan or Davis, Buddin, etc. -- we should get over the .90 threshold. Michigan will also get a boost if they get guys like Kendall or Spindler. Ultimately, the race for #2 in terms of quality is really between us and Michigan.

However, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and Maryland are all in the .88 range, which is pretty solid. So far, a good recruiting year for the Big Ten.

Yeah, based on their recent performance and terrible coaching, it defies logic really.

It'll be interesting to see how UT fares this coming season. To Pruitt's credit, he made a potential catastrophe season into an 8-5 performance and a bowl win. Certainly still not relevant nationally, but that season was headed to a very bad place.

If he can win 8 or 9 games this coming year and actually beat somebody with a pulse, they might have something brewing down there.

It's just weird to see such a ridiculous haul in a 7-day stretch in April/May for a Gator Bowl team.
