2021 Recruiting Class Thread

WR recruiting seems pretty cloudy at this point, with recent forecasts of Farooq to Oklahoma and Thornton to Oregon. Would love to have one or both players come on board but not looking like that will happen.

Granted, we took a ton of WRs in the last class. So we probably don't need many this go-around.

But it would certainly be disappointing to come up empty on our primary WR targets. Granted, a change of WR coach doesn't help.

Seemed like Prather was about ready to commit somewhere a week or two ago, and then silence.

Hopefully a season in which we can showcase our WRs a bit more in the offense will translate into better prospects on the recruiting trail. It's not hard to sell a kid on going to Oklahoma as a WR. Aside from Hamler, we haven't really set the world on fire at the WR position lately.

DL and WR recruiting seem to be struggling a bit so far. Neither Stubblefield or Scott are known as top recruiters so that will remain a concern until they deliver

Yeah, I mentioned a few times over the past few weeks that new offers out to 3 star receivers wasn't a particularly great sign as it relates to prather and thorton. Not that I begrudge the opinions that run contrary, but was told to not look too far into it and it may have been our coaches trying to turn up the heat on those guys to commit. It appears, at least at this moment in time, they are slipping away.

At least with Scott we saw his DL dominate the line of scrimmage against Georgia, akin to what we've become accustomed to with Chaos and Coach J.

Prather still doesn't have any crystal balls for anybody but Penn State. And all of his commitment forecasts on Rivals are for Penn State.

Thornton seemed high on Oregon shortly after decommitting a year or so ago. I just assumed that when he decommitted, he probably wouldn't be coming back.

We don't seem to have any real momentum from WRs in the south, though. Was hoping Stubblefield would bring some interest from kids he recruited at Miami.

There's the kid from Michigan whose HS team wears Penn State knockoff uniforms. Andrel Anthony? Maybe he's an option.

Fortunately, we have a big freshman WR class, along with guys like TJ Jones and Dunmore coming off of redshirt seasons. So I'm not terribly worried.

This was a really bad year to have a bunch of turnover on the coaching staff.

you guys are reading too much into very, very little.

Forecasts, or when they are made, aren't the end all. Farrooq has been out of the picture for some time. Thornton is a long way from making a decision.

Recruits give hints of potential plans on Twitter, but the NCAA keeps changing the recruiting schedule, causing the recruits to change their plans.

At this time, I have no concerns with either WR or DL recruiting.

If the WR recruits have watched the PSU games over the last couple of years they likely realize that the scheme is good to WR's that can actually catch a football. The top talents at WR since Godwin tore it up, in addition to Hamler, have been JJ and George and both (George so far) had their chances to put up numbers but dropped too many. The coaches can't go out on the field and make plays, and the WR's PSU is recruiting surely know that if they come to PSU they will get a chance to make plays within a dynamic offense, and that the potent RB room at PSU only enhances their chances for big passing game plays...

How can anybody hate on Stubbs and Scott right now? It's been a dead period since they've been on staff - relax, they haven't even had an opportunity to meet some of these kids face to face.

I don't think it's reasonable to criticize them, though I'm not sure anybody here was. One poster mentioned that our DL and WR recruiting is suffering now.......I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but we don't seem to be sitting as pretty at those positions as in years past.

Which is okay, given how many WRs and DL we got in our 2020 class. I'd be more concerned if we were having problems recruiting DBs or OL.

I think we'll be fine. We may take a lump or two in this recruiting cycle at those positions, but it won't be crippling by any means.

I think what it means in the end is that all of the athletes we got (Clifford, White Jr, Wheatley) will all end up in the WR room.

Especially if Davis and McMillan come aboard.

Most believe that Clifford and White were recruited to play WR. But every article and profile on Wheatley has him ending up at DB/Safety.

McMillan seems like a Safety all the way, while Davis could end up at Safety or eventually LB. Together with Reed, some see that as too many Safety's in one class, but Safety currently has about the lowest numbers and depth on the roster due to the misses over that last few recruiting classes. And the two starting Safety's this year, Wade and Brisker, are in their last year of eligibility. So I don't read anything more to it than the staff trying to bring the numbers at Safety up to where they want them to be. Three Safety's plus a great athlete that could play Safety or LB in what is projected as a smaller class? Looks like the plan. Just like a relatively large OL class, and a small DL class (due to the 7 player 2020 DL class)....

UM seems to have stopped recruiting Buddin

Yeah, I notice they recently got crystal ball picks for some out-of-state LBs -- a kid in Florida, and another kid, for instance. Perhaps they saw the writing on the wall and began to prioritize other LB targets.

Interestingly, 247 seems to have changed their CB page. They're now assigning a confidence level to their pick -- Trieu's pick is rated as "low" (2 out of 10).

Also......the crystal ball % on a recruit's profile page is also really misleading. Instead of showing the overall % of picks a school has for a kid, it only shows the % of picks among "lead experts". So for instance, Buddin is now 100% to PSU, but only Allen Trieu is a "lead expert". The other 7 CB picks were to other schools, but that doesn't show up.

Not that the CB stuff is gospel anyway. But interesting to see their changes.

Midwest expert Allen Trieu just CBed Jamari Buddin to Penn State. Earlier Tom Loy, ND insider, CBed Derrick Davis to Penn State.

Buddin would be a good pickup at LB. The Michigan board a while ago was trying to rationalize losing Reed and King to Penn State and they were reassuring each other that Buddin was the real prize and likely to sign with UM. Hope Jamari picks Penn State and brings another couple of his friends from Michigan.

He's been getting a bunch of Future Casts to Michigan State on Rivals.

It's clear that Michigan dropped from the race. Seems like most writers are assuming he stays in state, though.

Hamler just left. How about Allen Robinson, DeAndre Tompkins, Chris Godwin, DaeSean Hamilton? They have all done pretty well. Penn State players certinly have a chance to make it in the pro's and they haven't done a bad job at WR. Also, they had Juwan Johnson and Brandon Polk that both got a shot in the pro's this year.

Fair enough. Guess my next question is when did ATM start USING that collie as their mascot? This is the first time that I've seen it. Anyone else?
He has been used for years. I saw him about 10 years ago when I attended a game @ TA&M. He marches in the pregame parade with corps of cadets. His name begins with an "R" but it escapes me.[/QUOTE]

The dog's name is Reveille. In typical Aggie tradition, the dog is accorded deity-like status. One of my former students was placed in charge of Reveille while he (the student) was in the ROTC program. Some traditions that might seem bizarre to some:

1. The dog is actually given a rank in the TAMU ROTC program. The highest rank a cadet can earn is Cadet Colonel (Corps Commander); however, Reveille outranks even that cadet.

2. This one sounds too "tin foil hat"-ish, but I've heard from numerous Aggies that it's true. Reveille goes to class with the cadet who is its handler. Should the dog bark in that class, the professor is expected to dismiss the class in homage to Reveille.

3. There is a dog cemetery built for the dog mascots. Located near Kyle Field, the cemetery has a scoreboard set up so that Reveille can always keep up with how the Ag football team is doing.

Some non-Aggies find such "traditions" odd, but the many friends I have who are TAMU alums swallow them with great pride.

Thanks. Sean or Tyler said in one of their podcasts that they weren't positive if Buddin was a take right now.

They also got rid of the cloudy pick. So you are seeing a lot of low confidence CBs at the moment

Am I wrong for not worrying if there's no TE in this year's class, since we have yet to see B. Strange or Theo Johnson (2 highly rated guys) yet, and still have a year with Kuntz and Pat F.?

I see TEs as being similar to RBs in this class. If we can land a top-tier prospect, great. If not? I'm not too worried.

After this season, we'll likely have 2 more years of Kuntz, 3 more years of Strange, and 3-4 more years of Theo Johnson. Plus there's Tyler Warren.

Ideally, you want a TE in every class. But getting Johnson last year in addition to Warren probably gives us a bit of a cushion.

Johnson, because of injury and PF might be a candidate for a RS. Warren is a definite RS guy. If it is about 1 in each class here is the breakdown after this season.
Correct me if I am wrong:

Jr: ZK
SO: BS, TJ?
FR: Warren

So, like RB, is it imperative we take a TE?

Don't want to go back to the 2020 thread, so I'll put this here. Luke Hill was a PSU target last year.

Luke Hill, a former high school football player in the District who had committed to play this year at the University of Oregon, was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

In addition to those two felonies, Hill was charged with six misdemeanors in connection with an alleged incident Monday evening in which he is accused of shooting at another man who is dating his ex-girlfriend. A spokesman for the Prince George’s County Police Department said that “the intended target was not hurt, and this was not a random act.”

The intended target was reported by ESPN to be Ishmael Leggett, a former classmate of Hill’s at St. John’s College High who has committed to play basketball at the University of Rhode Island. When reached by phone Wednesday, Leggett told The Washington Post he could not comment.
