2021 Recruiting Class Thread

Gotta wonder if some of these kids will come knocking back at the PSU door later in the fall after visits and have second thoughts about moving so far away.

It’s puzzling. They go 11-2 and Cotton Bowl win and these PA kids want to go elsewhere. Is it Franklin’s low buyout and yearly rumors of heading elsewhere that is taking a toll? Something doesn’t seem right.

I think it is a congruence of a lot of negative factors at the worst possible time. It is some combination of the following:

- We got torched last year in the secondary. By the end of the year we had one of the worst secondaries in the country. There is no excuse for that. Smith just is not putting kids into the league in the same fashion as our competitors. It is really easy to negatively recruit us which kills us with Grimes.

- The constant WR coach turnover cost us Thornton. COVID has made it impossible for our new WR coach to build any relationships.

- Losing Spencer was a killer. It cost us Armitage and any shot at Jeudy. COVID made it impossible for our new DL coach to build any relationships.

- Firing Limegrover has hurt a lot of our relationships with OL recruits. COVID made it impossible for our new OL coach to build any relationships. Hope it doesn’t cost us Rucci.

- Our RB room is loaded. Hard to pull in any recruit and give a realistic pitch they can “compete” for time.

- Casting a wide national net for TEs is great, but it will always be harder to pull those kind of kids in. COVID made it impossible to have official visits to a campus which sells itself.

Perfect storm of shit much of it created by COVID, but some of it self-inflicted with bad personnel decisions. If we aren’t able to pack a White Out this season with nearly 110K I fear our chance to catch O$U in the near future is gone. Without that home field advantage, beating them will be a nearly impossible task.

In regards to Thornton, we lost out on him due to negative comments made by two former 6’4 wide receivers who chose to transfer, and our recent offenses bias towards the short and quick slant receiver (I hope Ciarocca and Clifford fix this ASAP).

McMillan has been enjoying the recruiting process and has made it pretty clear that he's interested in getting away from home. There might have been some hope that Penn State was "far enough" away from home...but it's seemed pretty apparent that he's interested in getting out of the area.

That said, I think Davis is a better safety prospect, though I think McMillan would potentially be a really nice linebacker prospect. I've thought he was maybe a little overrated in the last 247 update - I don't think he's a borderline top 100 player, probably closer to a top 247 kid. But I would have loved having him as the OLB in this class.

When one of your biggest recruiting strengths is the family atmosphere the Franklin facilitates, its hard to showcase that 100% virtually.
Does anyone here feel closer to their co-workers because you have zoom meetings now than you did when you were in the office every day?

Staff turnover and then not being able to start building relationships in person is obviously hurting too but I don't see any sort of larger issues at play here. Just feels like the lockdown is having a bigger impact on our program because of those factors.

Sounds like you have seen both Davis and McMillan play lots of games. What specifically about them leads you to believe McMillan would be a better LB? Some scouting services believe Davis will end up at LB.

Next month when Jamari Buddin commits nobody will be crying over recruits we missed out on. Franklin is doing what he does year after year.
Is anyone sure that he isn't just announcing a decision date as opposed to announcing the actual decision itself?:

As someone who knows two of his hs coaches, that's not the reason. It may be part of it or even some justification for not going but not THE reason

I also know one of the coaches at Mt. St. Joe and that’s what he told me. He also told me a few days ago that Thornton has expressed an interest in playing on the west coast, but that doesn’t explain the inclusion of Notre Dame and UVA. If you know of an additional reason, please do add, that’s the type of info people want to hear, thanks.

So one of the things that I was told is that he's liked Oregon since before they recruited him to Mount Saint Joes. Do you know he really liked Chip Kelly and those teams that were in the top 5 and all the fancy uniforms and helmets.

Part of what you said I agree with that he thinks they'll utilize him better than Penn State well. But definitely Oregon has been a team he's liked since he was 10 or 12 years old

His outdoor track times for 2020 are not good (11.48, 100 meters, 24.54, 200 meters). He looks good on a football field, fast track times or not. Maybe he had an injury he was trying to run through, but that 100 time is dismal for a WR/CB kind of position.

If he produces as much as David Daniels, of our past, he's done good!

I don’t think anyone posted Ryan’s FCs:
Farooq to Oklahoma
Gilliam to PSU
Wilson to UNC

Elliot Donald has retweeted Wade twice, Hamilton once, and Barnes twice in the last week. All related to racism and the current situation.

Franklin has handled the current environment better than any coach in the nation. A lot of coaches are being exposed as inauthentic right now.
Time will tell. Who hasn’t handled it well? Will players walk the walk? Or will the benjamins prevail over principles. Watch and learn.
