2022 Southern scuffle

Why would Spencer be done? Didn't he just wrestle?
Hypothetically, he realized from Journeyman Collegiate Dual he wasn't at his high standard, and now delayed double surgeries are what's thought best. And, maybe Ayala's performance might allow Ayala to RS next year after pulling this year's. And maybe also the odds are increasing that Kemerer may be done this year. So overall maybe Spencer thinks he'll have a better chance to be a 4-timer and part of a 2nd Iowa championship next year while also putting him in a better position for an Olympic run.

If Spencer is done as previously stated (reported by Mineo, and talk of it on HR), does that change anyones opinion of pulling Facundo's shirt? I'm in the boat of not pulling it either way, but some view it different. But to those that want the shirt to be pulled, if Spencer is indeed done, that means Iowa won't score near the points. I have been super impressed with Ayala and think he's a better option than Ybarra, but I don't think they pull his shirt either. I'm interested to see if this changes anyones view.
They will 100% pull Ayala shirt I think.

With the way Max Murin and Kaleb Young have looked, along with Kemerer's health status being a mystery combined with Spencer being done, Iowa is likely toast. Ayala won't be the difference. We now turn our sights to Michigan, because they pose the bigger challenge, IMO.

Ayala’s next match at the Scuffle is against #12 Surtin. If he wins that, he most likely meets #9 McGee (3rd in 2021) in semis. Win that and its #8 Cardinale (7th in 2021) in the finals.

We should get a good idea about who Iowa has at 125 without Spencer Lee by the end of the weekend.

I won't be surprised in the slightest if Ayala runs the table in this tourney. He's the real deal and rolling with Spencer every day should have prepared him well. Let's see if he has closed the gap with McKee.

Matt Lee pushing Facundo… it’s 3-2 AF in 3rd and that was with ML not getting a TD in 2nd that I though he might have had. ML the clear aggressor.

edit: 3-2 was the final. ML close to finishing go-ahead TDs in 2nd and 3rd.

Exactly and next year when they roll out they will look a lot different because of it. I remember when Zain took that year off and came back it was a completely different wrestler we were seeing although his redshirt was his sophomore year but same idea
I do believe that had DT decided to wrestle as a true freshman by the end of the season he would have been ready, but by golly there was one helluva difference between that intrasquad match with Cyler and DT the next year.
By the end of Nico's freshman year he was obviously ready, and miles distanced from his first match against Sanders.
Mark was ready to roll as a true freshman.

Jason and Bo weren't ready by the scuffle their freshman years.

Zain as a freshman played a part in PSU winning a team title. It possibly kept Zain from being a 4 time champ.

I am fine with Edsell wrestling 165.
Edsell is tough and the kid has improved. I give him a ton of credit. That said, if you expect points from him at NCAAs...who knows? Then again, if Spencer is done, we may be just fine with 0 points at 165.

Matt is solid , but remember there's a lot being familiar with each other after wrestling each other for months.

Nolf had a great Scuffle in his redshirt year. Beat everyone except James Green in the finals, whom he lost to something like 7-4. He was 15-1 his redshirt year and 33-2 his freshman year (only losses to IMar, whom he also beat). He won (dominated the Scuffle) his freshman year.

#2 Green, James (30 - 5)#5 Nebraska01/01Southern Scuffle157LDEC7 - 4
#41 Parsons, Russell (27 - 12)#58 Army01/01Southern Scuffle157WDEC6 - 1

#3 Realbuto, Brian (22 - 3)#4 Cornell01/01Southern Scuffle157WDEC7 - 4
#33 Flournoy, Greg (28 - 12)#56 George Mason01/01Southern Scuffle157WDEC10 - 4

#27 Shakur, Kamaal (24 - 7)#40 Chattanooga01/01Southern Scuffle157WFALL5:45
#78 Dempsey, Walker (5 - 9)#43 Stanford01/01Southern Scuffle157WTF525 - 10 6:28
#57 Dowdy, Chris (13 - 6)#6 Cornell01/01Southern Scuffle157WTF523 - 8 7:00

#6 Smith, Joe (34 - 5)#1 Oklahoma State01/01Southern Scuffle157WDEC7 - 3

I was going to say, Nolf only lost to James Green his true freshman year. He beat Brian Realbuto at the Scuffle (who finished 6th year before after defaulting out and would finish 2nd later that year) If Alex had results like that, I think he'd be wrestling with what the team race looks like this year.

Donovan Ball vs Colton Hawks (Missouri)

0-0 after one. Hawks had a couple of shots, but no one close to scoring.

Ball chooses bottom to start 2nd. Up to feet… brought down. Back up… brought down. Tried a switch… nothing. Hawks tries a turn with one foot in… no pts. Back to center at 1:23 to go.

Ball up to feet again… faces Hawks… OOB. 1:11. Ball up again and out at 1:05. 1-0 good guys.

Lots of action… no TDs over the final 1:05 of 2nd period.

Hawks chooses bottom to start 3rd. Has 0:55 RT right now. Out in 12 secs. 1-1. Several shots by each wrestler,.. no TDs. 1-1 going to SV.

Lots of action in OT…. Ball had single leg in air and couldn’t finish. Dang! Dragged him in and all but Hawks legged out. Ball showing good cardio. Lots of shots. Ball single leg…, switches to double…. Gets the call at buzzer!!!!

Ref checking video….

Call stands! Ball wins 3-1 in SV!!!

I miss watching nolf. I remember everyone being big on him but I never saw him being as good as he was. He definitely exceeded my expectations and I'm sure everyone else's. Hard to find guys that good coming out of high school

Another point to keep in mind is that the Scuffle field is far weaker this year than it was when Nolf, DT, and others debuted their stuff. Starocci also beat 6 guys and won the Scuffle in his redshirt year, when he was 19-0

Seth’s match vs Duke was a head scratcher that ended with considerable chippiness when he finally did what it looked like he’d be able to do and throw for the fall. Duke guy was MAD.

Nevills down 4-3 in 3rd gets super aggressive.. gets the stall call… then throws (trips?) other wrestler to back and gets the fall at about 6 mins. Other wrestler gets up ticked off… very chirpy… ref has to calm him down. Don’t know why.
