2024 Olympics Wrestling (merged)

We know the quarterfinal opponents for the three U.S. wrestlers coming up

57 kg MFS – Spencer Lee (USA) vs. Bekzat Almaz Uulu (Kyrgyzstan)

86 kg MFS – Aaron Brooks (USA) vs. Hayato Ishiguro (Japan)

57 kg WFS – Helen Maroulis (USA) vs. Alina Hrushyna Akobiia (Ukraine)
All these matches already happened and we won all of them. All 3 in the semis now

What a morning. I set my alarm for 5:00am and turned on the TV to discover that my home theater receiver had just started a firmware update and it couldn’t be interrupted. I went into the den, turned on the TV, and had to download Peacock onto the Fire Stick. Got it downloaded and then had trouble logging into Peacock with my username and password. Of course while all this is going on and I’m in a panic, the one dog started barking incessantly to go out. I ignore her because wrestling is more important. Well, the dog wakes up the wife who’s pissed. Now, both she and the dog are barking at me. I finally get logged in, took the dog out, and Aaron’s match is just beginning. It all worked out. I didn’t miss a thing.

I can't tell you why...but I have a pretty good feeling about all 3 of these QF matches.

At least you have your priorities right.

at least the dog didn't piss on the wife

Some of these foreign wrestlers look like they are going to die after the match.

The 2 point takedown really changed everything for america. Our gas tanks really mean something. And we can afford to get out-freestyled every now and then. And exposure or a throw absolutely KILLED us in the past. Our folkstyle was useless to a certain degree.

4 more years is a long time to put off his MMA career.

Also, he's not a 65 kg guy. His reported walk-around 145 would need to go up another 10-15 lb.

Which he could do. He's never "lifted" to put on muscle/weight. Has a great frame for it too.

57kg - Round of 16 - Roman Guillermo Bravo Young (MEX) VS Arsen Harutyunyan (ARM)

P1:
RBY looks thin.
Tying up & fighting for position in the center, feeling each other out
Head tapping & slapping, tying up & breaking
RBY warned for slapping too hard, restart
Passivity warning RBY
5-min left
Not much action by either wrestler, RBY a little more active, but neither doing much.
Tying up, circling
RBY 2nd passivity warning, goes on the clock,
Harutyunyan gets to a let, working & gets the TD on the edge, 2-0, 4:17 left
Refs at the table now & they're discussing it
TD awarded & Harutyunyan gets another point for something else, but I'm not sure what, 3-0
Starting in par terre, but no turns for Harutyunyan, restart
Shot clock point Harutyunyan, 4-0
RBY shoots, driving forward, but they go out of bounds, restart
Tying up & circling, Harutyunyan shoots, gets a leg, working & gets the TD on the edge, 6-0, restart
Period ends
Harutyunyan is tough & RBY is as small as I've ever seen him

P2:
Circling, RBY looking for an opening, but Harutyunyan with solid defense.
RBY working a 2 on 1
Harutyunyan shoots, RBY counters, working, Harutyunyan countering RBY & they go out of bounds, point Harutyunyan, 7-0, restart, 2:15 left
Tying up, Harutyunyan half shot, nothing
RBY shoots a slick duck, gets behind & gets the TD, 7-2, working for a turn, but can't get one & gets warned for something, like torquing on Harutyunyan's neck, restart, 1:37 left
Looks like injury time for Harutyunyan now, aka, the 'lung' timeout
Back to action, Harutyunyan shoots, nothing
RBY reaches for a leg, nothing & Harutyunyan drives RBY out of bounds, exposing him for 4, 11-2, restart
RBY pushing forward, but Harutyunyan hits a slick TD for the 13-3 Tech

Arsen Harutyunyan TECH Roman Bravo Young 13-3 (4:50)
I am not a fan of the cut strategy, especially for light weights. 6 weight classes sucks, especially after watching some of the more rediculous sports ever in the Olympics.

How about we drop table tennis or badminton first?

...and we need sports where the horses are the true athletes?

No need to even start there. That's a non-starter for the IOC. And if they dropped other sports, they ain't looking to give wrestling more weight classes (see, break dancing, see flag football)

Bad examples. Table tennis is great and badminton is pretty good too. Those events have Olympic tradition and are Olympic worthy.

I try to keep an open mind about the new Olympic events, such as trampoline and skateboarding. I can live with those two.

However, ...

Breakdancing?? Give me an effin' break. Effin' ridiculous.
Also never thought that rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming were Olympic worthy.
Numerous other examples as well.
And, yes, only six weights for Olympic wrestling is stupid.

From my experience Table Tennis was great in college as a nice beer pong table. That is about it.

yes, for god's sake, if you're going to start dropping sports, start with the ones that are judged.

Handball, really, I have never seen a true handball court, not a league or any national interest. Is this sport for countries where the people have no feet!

3 on 3 basketball for countries who suck at normal basketball!

Rythim gymnastics for gymnists who are not competitive at the real thing!

Honest to god, let's be real, all of these are pretty much offered up as compensation for marginalized athletes and countries. Next will be participation trophies.

Then you take one of the oldest sports in history and screw over world champions by forcing them to do unnatural things with their weight just to get a chance to compete against world champions at their natural weight.

The IOC is woke, I blame USA wrestling and the other country level organizations for Iran, Russia, and ask the other countries with strong programs. A travesty.

PS - Reluctantly, I am in for dropping Greco if it comes to that.

If they could come up with a way to make Greco more offensive I would watch it.

6 minutes of hand fighting and pushing just does not do it for me.
