2024 Olympics Wrestling (merged)

Just looking at Dakes bracket. He has an easy first match against VEN. On the opposite side there is a pigtail match between Zhamalov and Kadi! Crazy pigtail match. Those are the 2 favorites after Dake. The winner of that gets Salkazanov! So brutal. On Dakes side there is a pigtail between Emami and Chamizo. Another brutal first match for those 2. Winner of that should wrestle Dake in the second round

No!!!! Are you kidding. ****ing heartbreaking

Heart attacking..... I went into tachycardia after screaming FVCK as loud as I possibly could. 165 pbm. Finally came back down.

That turk took a lot out of him.

I do as well. No idea how it wasn't. Unless some sort of continuation.
I went back and watched. It was very very close. I think they might have given 2 if Casey threw the brick. It all depends on how the referees view being fully behind.

57kg (W) Semi-Final - Helen Maroulis (USA) VS Tsugumi Sakurai (JPN)

P1:
Here we go!
Head taps & hand fighting in the center of the mat
Sakurai working a 2 on 1, Helen trips Sakurai to the mat for a TD, 2-0, no turn, restart
Helen working for wrist control, Sakurai trying to fight her off & they break, 4:20 left
Tying up again, Helen tries another inside trip, nothing, restart
Helen working a 2 on 1, but Sakurai fighting hard
Lots of hand fighting in this match
Sakurai working a 2 on 1, Helen tries another trip, Sakurai counters for 4, 4-2
The period ends
4-2 Sakurai

P2:
Back to action & hand fighting
Sakurai working a 2 on 1, but isn't doing anything with it, stalemate, restart, 2:15 left
Sakurai with an underhook, snaps, Helen counters with a whizzer, working, Sakurai trying to come around, Helen fighting hard, but Sakurai fights for the TD, 6-2, Sakurai with the legs laced & gets a turn, 8-2, and then adds another, 10-2
Sakurai working for more, 40-sec left
Helen fights out of it, turns & counters for a TD, 10-4, 14-sec left, Helen looking for a turn, but no luck & the match ends 10-4 Sakurai

Sakurai just demolished Helen. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen her beat quite like this

Trying not to lose

Your subtlety going to be insufferable a decade from now when DT finally (maybe) gets OSU a title.

I didn't realize that's how the brackets worked. Lots of oddities in Free.

If I read it correctly...... I think repechage works like this. A finalist wins 3 times, that means there are 3 losers. Loser 1 and 2 square off with the winner meeting the losing semifinalist for a bronze.

Same for other 8 man bracket. Always wondered how they got to 2 bronzes.

Looking at the bracket for Mason Parris. Pretty decent draw and definitely on the easier side. First match is against Lkhagvagerel Munkhtur from Mongolia who has a world silver and bronze. Definitely a tough first match. If he wins I think he should win his second match as well and then would likely have Geno in the semifinals. Parris has wrestled Geno closely fairly recently. The other side of the bracket has the 2 favorites in Zare and Akgul. I think Parris has a real chance to make the finals

At 74kg I still just can’t believe that the 2 pigtails are Emami vs Chamizo and Zhamalov vs Kadi! Those are 2 ****ing insane matches that would usually be happening in the medal round and instead they are happening in the pigtail match. Just brutal for those 4 guys

Don’t see any matches with DT, but there is a 4 year gap in competition on UWW. Notable wins over Americans include a tech over Marstellar and an 8-3 win over Max Dean.
hmmmmmmmm

could be a coincidence, but that is a very common PED suspension time frame.

I have always held the belief that it takes 3 years to transition from folk to freestyle world medal level performance.

Snyder, AB and Spencer for that matter are exceptions to the rule. By all measures AB has overachieved in his young professional freestyle career. I chalk this loss up to experience moreso than ability. No doubt he will win multiple world level gold medals in the future.

This loss stings and smacks of some woulda, coulda, shoulda, but on balance will teach him to wrestle a little more aggressive earlier and smarter near the end of a match. It's all good, and great to be a fan of his career(s).

Burroughs, Gilman, Yianni, and Steveson would also be exceptions. All 4 reached a World or Olympic final within a few months after NCAAs.

Amine won Olympic Bronze while still in college.

Parris won World Bronze last year, again in the same calendar year as NCAAs.

Bekzod too -- World Bronze in Year 2 after Clarion.

Dake might have been too, if not at the same weight as Prime Burroughs.

But honestly I was rooting for AB. This was a USA deal. I really wanted to see him and Yazdani.

He shut it down and got too passive. I’ve seen a lot of that in Stillwater so I should know

When he was taking his gap year at the OTC, I remember Aaron gave an interview where he mentioned Kevin Jackson taught him how to shut things down and win at the end of a tight match. I remember thinking at the time that I hope Cael would get that stink off of him. It’s not his usual style, and sometimes you gotta find a path.

But honestly just have to credit the “Bulgarian” His defense and scrambling savvy was the difference in that match. AB will get his gold.

Anybody else thinking the North Korean women are more than a little dirty as a group? Eye-poking, attempting to injure knees, etc. Gotta watch yourself out there.
