2025 NCAA's - Match/PBP/discussions (merged)

"Guys finishing third, there's a lot of honor in that." I love that statement by Cael. Having five of our wrestlers finishing third and one finishing fifth is a great testament to the coaching staff. The backside run of the team was so impressive!
Cael uses the disappointment of a wrestling outcome as a teaching tool for "life". It's one of his common quotes.

One other interesting tidbit. Take a look at the team picture on the PSU Wrestling page. Is that Ono standing next to Josh Barr wearing the PSU National Champions tee shirt?
Well he is in Japan as of right now, so maybe not. But he could have gotten the red eye out of philly.

a few more questions about 4 or 5 times a guy would get a TD and the ref would call time or stalemate what's up with that> and more than a few times guys on top were clearly riding and still on the mat and the refs would call out of bounds!!
I can't remember the PSU match (I think in qtrs or semis) but PSU wrestler was coming around to finish a take down , ref gave 3 and then immediately called stalemate. Opponents challenged. They allowed the takedown but the quick whistle could of been a problem.

I remember that. I was thinking, did the ref stop the action because of the brick? You need to let the wrestling finish first.

I thought we were going to see a rumble between, initially, Marinelli (sitting just to the left of Carter in that pic) and Carter. They were both coaching from that corner. Marinelli yelled something directly behind Carter and Carter gave him the "get the f*** away from me" look. Then Mitch showed up. Then Kennedy. Then Levi. Then Teemer and the little dude who acts like the Hawkeye hype man at their duals. Was kind of funny, actually. Thought it could turn into a full fledged turf war! If I could post a video, I recorded some of it while watching the match!

Also, @amattaro, looks like you had some good seats! ;-)
Even a minny Ditka wouldn't mess with Carter.

Was the takedown awarded because the ref had given a danger 3 count? If so it’s not unusual for the ref to stop the action.

Please someone who knows why bout was stopped immediately after such a TD and wrestlers sent back to center, answer this (even speculation ok). Seems like they were using freestyle rules?

My friend who doesn't watch much wrestling but did watch Saturday night asked who were the last 2 wrestlers and why were they wrestling if this was a college tournament. Took a bit for me to explain about eligibility rules. That was the most unusual NCAAs I have seen.

I also don't know why they were calling a stalemate and stopping action immediately after a takedown, but I felt extremely confident in the 184 finals match when they chose to do a review. I mean, can you imagine them overturning the takedown when it should have been patently obvious that if action continued that Starocci was going to maintain control and improve his position (not to mention the fact that it was undeniably a takedown)? People (including Cael and company) would justifiably lose their sh** if they stopped the action and then overturned the call.

Wow, cool! Linsey Vonn finished second today too, in the World Cup Finals!! I believe she and Gable were in high school together!

(Yeah, I know it’s a false narrative, but still fun to poke fun at Steveson’s timeline.)

Didn't Schwab throw the brick immediately after the takedown call?

At that point Carter was not in a position to threaten for back points. If scoring does not appear imminent and the brick is out, IDK how much clock we should expect the ref to burn.

I suppose that makes sense IF they stopped action because of the brick, but that's not what I recall.

Yes, but it looked like Carter could have improved his position (from a TD perspective, not back points). If the TD was waived off, Carter could have been unfairly penalized. Maybe that factored into Schwab's decision to quickly throw the brick, though I suspect it was just a spur-of-the-moment reaction.

I think they were applying the neutral danger rule. If, after the announcement of neutral danger followed by a 3 count, the TD is awarded. But if the wrestlers are in a situation where neither wrestler can improve his position the ref will call a stalemate and return the wrestlers to the center of the mat in the referee’s position.

The replay ends when the brick is thrown. Carter improving his position after that moment is irrelevant to the replay.

Took a few days to get through the (hangover and) 40 pages of Day 3 discussion to see how much was already discussed. Some of this was, most not:

- Carters match was over for a few minutes before Trump walked in. Mat was clear, no wrestlers or coaches in sight.

- The interviews were NOT broadcast on the big screen. The arena was more or less dead. Unless you were within 20 feet of Carter you wouldn’t know he was being interviewed.

- President Trump was at the opposite corner from where the interviews were being done. Absolutely no way anyone in the area knew there was a live TV interview going on.

- Arena put President Trump on big screen and arena announcer introduced him (both clearly pre planned), causing a roar from the crowd. But there was nothing stopping ESPN from waiting 10 more seconds for Carter to finish his answer to cut away from Carter. President Trump was just standing there waiving.

- I didn’t time all the other interviews, but most wrestlers got 2 questions. Carter got 2 questions w one answer interrupted at the end. Other than Mitchell talking like Mitchell, I doubt anyone got much more air time.

- I don’t know why President Trump didn’t come in Earlier (ie before or after national anthem) which would have worked better. My guess is that because the pregame hype was orchestrated and rehearsed, they didn’t want to change the schedule when it was announced he would be there. Just a guess, but I can tell you the lead in was very well planned.

- Carter didn’t know or care that he was maybe interrupted. He clearly wanted to go meet President Trump immediately before he was informed that all AAs would have the chance after the medal ceremony.

- The wrestlers loved it. Most if not all AAs went over to shake hands and get photos. Many coaches too. Carter loved it. Did multiple interviews talking about it.

- I can’t fathom how anyone who is a fan of this sport, a sport that struggles for attention, would bemoan the President of the United States giving it attention. Any President.

- If you think it was just some publicity stunt, ask yourself why President Trump stayed until the HWT All Americans got their medals, which happened after the arena was half empty. ESPN also could have shown a ton of coverage of wrestlers greeting him, etc. and as far as I know they showed very little if any.

i was absolutely baffled to see lachlan mcneil go over there and get a picture with trump.

it was also a very strange decision to leave heavyweight til last, where the american flag toting, jesus shirt wearing guy was likely to lose 9 times out of 10. unless, of course, they knew something the rest of us didn't...

Gable got his retirement bag after all?

I thought Kasak and Levi both lost because they weren't able to horse their guys like they did all season. Maybe they didn't eat right on Friday and had to cut a little extra on Saturday morning sapped some strength?
edit. Both guys weren't able to finish some TDs like they usually did.

Kasak lost because he didn't finish his shots well enough. He was the better wrestler all match but was not concise at times. His was the only match all tournament where I thought he was head and shoulders better than his opponent but lost. Levi got beat by the same guy in the regular season so him beating Levi again and in a similar manner tells me it was a bad style matchup. It happens. Very happy that both bounced back.

That was Levi's first career match vs Hamiti. He lost to O'Toole in the regular season.

i thought Levi took too many shots from too far away with not enough setup. Works against most of the field, but not against a long guy whose coach didn't need to see a scouting report. He didn't finish his shots because his shots weren't good enough to beat Hamiti.

I'm sorry, I was mixing up SVN and Levi. Brain fart. Too little sleep the last 4-5 days. Your take on Levi is accurate.

Going under Buchanan last night took a lot out of Barr. I won't go as far as it cost him the match, but it definitely hurt his chances. He can obviously improve his technique, but getting an early TD might prove more beneficial so he doesn't need to go under.
On that TD Buchanan tapped Josh's head and changed levels, causing Josh to go to both knees in reaction. Josh stayed on his knees a moment too long and Buchanan made him pay for it. If not for that mistake by Josh, the score is still probably 2-0 going into the third period. That third period would have been very interesting since Buchanan would have ultimately needed a TD or a turn to get the win. Buchanan probably would have ridden Josh for a few seconds to get to a minute+ of riding time and then released him. Josh would also have been less tired in the third period since he would not have been ridden by Buchanan so hard. Whether a fresher Josh could have held off Buchanan in the third we'll never know. P.S., It is interesting that as freshmen Josh and Levi respectively faced fifth and sixth year seniors. That is a tall task for a freshman.

Very true. For example, you can't find any of the finals matches from former Penn State greats like Jeff Prescott, Abe, or Scott Lynch. It's a real shame!
Pretty sure if you go the Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma you can watch any championship match. There is a room in which you look up a match and play it. Maybe go sometime and make a bootleg.

BTW - what happened to Iowa State? They really dropped off the radar. After last year's 4th place finish, I thought they were gradually making a comeback but they dropped to #27 this year and I don't think they had any AA's. Hopefully this is just one down year for them.
I think the folks in Iowa just discovered they don't like wrestling or something. Thought that would change after Ruth and Taylor left PSU but....

Kasak is odd he was gassing the beginning of the season then he was fine the 2nd half no gassing then he again was getting tired at the tourney!dont know what's up maybe he had a cold etc etc
