And thus the CJF to USC rumors swirl

Don't pretend any coach welcomes any potential distraction. I don't think he'd go to USC but that's more about his kids right now than anything else.

Big, big difference between not welcoming a distraction and said distraction being the cause of packing up the family and moving the entire way across country.

You realize that's going to likely be a distraction for years if not decades. Coaches have left for far less but we agree about the family part. I don't think he'd switch job unless his wife and girls wanted to. And maybe they would. Who knows.

I would drive to Texas to pick up Matt Rhule and bring him home.

Nothing against Franklin. I think Rhule is every bit the Coach Franklin is and then some.

I also think Franklin will go wherever he thinks it is best for Franklin. Nothing wrong with that, I’d do the same thing. I have heard too many coaches preach they are with family, only to take a job somewhere else soon thereafter.
Can Rhule recruit like Franklin? He has improved bad programs. How many Top 20 seasons does he have?

I think State College has grown on Franklin's wife, but I heard early on she was no fan. For all the traffic and bloated egos in La la land, it is a beautiful place to live assuming you have a ton of money and are a celebrity, Franklin would be/have both. He did'nt exactly say "no way" last year when asked about it.

Temple and Baylor after everything that happened there. Why would we be judging him on top 20 seasons. How many did Franklin have at Vandy?
Franklin is now a proven top coach. Matt Rhule isn’t. The post claimed that Matt Rhule is currently equal or better than Franklin. That includes PSU

With the exception of Saban it wouldn't shock me to see any coach leave their current job. I could see Dabo or Kirby going to Bama. I could see Lincoln Riley or Ryan Day going to the NFL. Penn State's an elite job. IMO Franklin would only leave for another elite job if he felt he was somehow limited here or if his family wanted to switch.

Franklin can basically stay at PSU as long as he wants. A few mediocre seasons at USC and he's gone.

Long term stability aspect favors PSU.

Jumping to USC carries a ton of risk. If he leaves, I think it would be for Clemson or Bama, whichever one doesn’t get Dabo in 5 years.

USC? Lateral move at best right now. Why take the risk?

Ultimately, nobody knows whether he'd be able to recruit at an elite level at Penn State. That's the wild card.

I love what I see from him in terms of preparation and the like. I think he could succeed here. He would be my preferred candidate if for whatever reason Franklin left.

While Franklin is CLEARLY the more established and proven of the two, one can draw reasonable comparisons between Rhule in his current state and Franklin at Vanderbilt. Tough to win at a place like Temple and Baylor (given the circumstances), but he's doing it and very likely will finish top-25 this year. Plus, get a guy like that into a program like Penn State that recruits itself more so than a Baylor, and who knows how successful he could be.

He still needs that program-defining signature win, but that Baylor win @ K-State a few weeks ago is looking better by the day.

I live in Pasadena which is a nice city to live. We've been here for nearly nine years. It is close enough to downtown LA/Hollywood but far enough way not to have to deal with the big city crap. The house of the USC President is in Pasadena (well actually San Marino technically) and the commute from Pasadena to USC isn't terrible--depending on the time of day.

While I am in academia, I don't travel in the same orbit as what we're talking about so I don't deal with the type of egos you reference. There are typical "LA" people wherever you go but vast majority of people here could be found anywhere in the US. Traffic on the other hand is something else. It has started to wear on me. Thankfully, my wife and I usually find plenty to do in and around Pasadena.

Probably the biggest change would be the amount of coverage. Now that the Lakers are back to being relevant (I've been a Clippers fan since we moved here in 2010 so I've enjoyed the Lakers melodrama and crap performances), USC football would be the second team and the coverage, interest, and second-guessing would be 3-4 times what he sees/feels in PA. Yes, the Rams are good but a top-level USC team would easily outdraw them.

My prediction: both Riley and Day will be in the NFL in 3 to 4 years. Day had several NFL OC offers already and if a HC offer comes along, he's gone. The one to keep an eye on is Matt Campbell. I believe he's the next hot item when coaching jobs open up.

LA’s location and weather are first rate. While I think this entire thread is a stretch, what you mention is the big draw to USC, IMO.

I no longer have Matt Campbell as my top option if Franklin leaves.

Same here.

I just get the sense that he's a perennial 8-5 type of guy. Which, at Iowa State, is pretty good. But it doesn't suggest to me that he's suited for a storied program like Penn State.

In a fairly weak Big XII, I'd want to see him win 10+ games at least now and then to get me to believe that he's ready for a prime time gig. Rhule is almost there already.

That's how much PSU has to pay him if he's fired. If he leaves for another job, he owes PSU $1mm.

Art, you post this buyout info like once every month at least. Not a lot of folks paying attention. Thanks for being dialed in with so many facts and figures. It adds to the quality of the McA Board.

Only one thing is certain- if and when CJF leaves, the same a-holes who criticize his every move will be crying about "loyalty" and "how could he do this to us?"
According to some posters he can’t coach worth a damn yet his name is one of the top candidates for every HC opening. The ADs obviously don’t read this board

Thats nothing given the current coaching market.

I don’t see him leaving, but life will go on if he does.

He has done well here, but he can be replaced. It’s not like we have a string of NCs and B1G titles to look back on.

I don’t know how many of you have been to Southern California, geography not school, but it is an incredible area.

Anyone who can pull in top bucks would live there in a minute.

As for football, between LA and San Diego you have a huge population and some of the greatest scholastic programs in the nation.

With that recruiting base you can add the USC program attraction that can gift you entre into the home of kids all over the country.

State College is a nice area, but the opportunities at Southern Cal for outside income and family are incredible. I would not blame Franklin one iota if he took the opportunity if it came along.

USC hires Penn State coach James Franklin to replace Clay Helton
Few in the industry would be surprised to see Franklin as USC's next head coach. Meyer's return is no guarantee, and he might not be the preferred choice of new USC president Carol Folt.

Franklin has a very good team at Penn State and momentum in recruiting. He's a "Pennsylvania boy with a Penn State heart," as he famously said at his PSU introduction. But he also wants to win a national championship. If Penn State loses to Ohio State for the third consecutive year, and the Buckeyes win their third consecutive league title, Franklin could bolt for USC. Coaches crave access and USC has more -- both in recruiting and for the playoff -- than Penn State.

Oklahoma's loss opens door for CFP debate over one-loss teams
If the Penn State job opens, the candidate pool would be excellent. Four names immediately jump out: Baylor coach Matt Rhule (a former Penn State linebacker), Iowa State coach Matt Campbell, Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead and Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell.

Rhule recently received a contract extension at Baylor, but I'm told it wouldn't prohibit him from a move like Penn State, where he'd be a home-run hire. Moorhead, who shined as Penn State's offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017, must turn things around with the Bulldogs but still has strong support among key Penn State people. Campbell, still one of the more talked-about candidates in the country, is ultimately a better fit closer to his home state of Ohio. Fickell has Cincinnati headed toward its second straight double-digit win season. He also has recruited Pennsylvania for years.

Someone has too much time on their hands. Any rational person knows USC is not as good a gig as PSU.

The amount of disrespect is un****ing real with this statement. 3rd winningest coach in college football since we got out of the sanction period at a place with a stained reputation, is in the middle of nowhere, and doesn’t have an AD who sells its soul to win football games.

Yeah, “he has done well.” When you go down to pick up Matt Rhule can you never come back?
