And thus the CJF to USC rumors swirl

Amen.

Penn State is 8-0 coming off a win vs an opponent who has had great recent success vs PSU. The next game is against undefeated Minnesota at their place, and Ohio State, playing as well or better than any team in the country, looms ahead.

Penn State is absolutely in the running for a conference championship and the national playoff. There are plenty of good stories about the players on this team. Fan enthusiasm and attendance is at high levels.

And this thread, based on some baseless speculation in an ESPN column, takes off?? About a subject where there is no actual news nor would there be anything actually happening for months.

I'm done with this but I'm at a loss to see what the point is here.
I think the point is that we still have some people who want Franklin gone just because they don't like him. I think those people are idiots at best, and are something else at worst.

Are we pretending Day won't be able to recruit now? Also, getting a QB from the portal isn't a negative. It's part of the game. Looking forward to when we start using the portal as intended.

If PSU can find a proven DT and a top cover corner in the portal I hope they grab them. Ditto a punter.

I don’t know how many of you have been to Southern California, geography not school, but it is an incredible area.

Anyone who can pull in top bucks would live there in a minute.

As for football, between LA and San Diego you have a huge population and some of the greatest scholastic programs in the nation.

With that recruiting base you can add the USC program attraction that can gift you entre into the home of kids all over the country.

State College is a nice area, but the opportunities at Southern Cal for outside income and family are incredible. I would not blame Franklin one iota if he took the opportunity if it came along.

Just curious, when was the last time you were out there? I was recently as my son lives close to the SC campus, on the crappy side of town. Very debatable on the quality of life issues. For all the pros, right now from what I see/saw, the cons outweigh them. James lives in an idyllic place. He really would have to think long and hard to leave for L A I just don’t see it.

You have severe reading comprehension issues fan boy.

Idyllic? State College? I guess I must have missed the theaters, Cultural centers, perfect climate, major corporate centers, beaches, night life, educational options, and cultural diversity my last trip to Center County. Now if you want small town quiet you have it in State College.

My wife and I have been to Cali a number of times in the past few years. My daughter goes to school there. She loves it. The business and employment opportunities are amazing. She has friends in the Valley, Ventura, Pasadena, San Diego, Orange, Newport Beach, Hollywood, LA. All major cities have areas to avoid. Few regions have the beauty and living options that LA possesses, if you have the coin to spend.

Anyone with money and half a brain can pick from dozens of beautiful locations in Cali.

USC does not have a history of hiring hot coaches and paying them a lot of money. Pete Carroll was a failed NFL head coach and a lot of “experts” mocked that decision. Kiffin and Sark were at big schools but both had a prior connection to SC. Helton was a nobody. The AD position has been a mess there for sometime, and SC doesn’t have facilities or the fan base of many other top schools.

What they are however is the premier program west of Austin,TX and that counts for something.

If you look at the big picture, JF has led Penn State to the position of second best program in the league -- surpassing Michigan, Michigan State, anyone in the West, and knocking on Ohio State's door...while Urban the legend is gone and the new guy is not yet a proven commodity.

In fact, the real "Big Game" is no longer Ohio State-Michigan, which has been dominated by the Bucks for 15 years, but rather Ohio State-Penn State, which has produced three classic, nail-biting games in a row.

Next year, JF has a team that will be ranked in the top-5 pre-season, with another high-powered recruiting class waiting in the wings. Why walk away from an amazing accomplishment like that?

Sure, USC is a glamorous job with a number of environmental pluses and football enticements. For one thing, the competition in the conference is a whole lot easier. Not to mention they'd probably pay him a king's ransom.

But at the end of the day, the entire discussion has been generated by the speculation of some ESPN schmuck looking for clicks in Penn State's bye week. It means nothing. Could JF be enticed by USC? Yes. He could also be abducted by Martians. Meanwhile, there's a huge game coming up against Minnesota on November 9.

I live 12 miles from NYC and all that it offers. I have the beaches and pretty much all the things you mentioned. But it’s such a hassle going in that we rarely do anymore, now that I don’t work there. The big city isn’t for everyone, and in the day to day living, all the culture et al doesn’t mean a lot. And the word idyllic has nothing to do with what you mentioned.
My son recently moved to Sherman Oaks and is now waiting to see if he has to evacuate. Guess I’m not as enamored with SoCal as you are.

Places like state college are idyllic for a football coach. James has little time to do any of that stuff anyway. The dude is the most famous person in PA from Philly to Pittsburgh and being the HC at PSU means a lot to people here. As a young coach from PA being the HC at PSU is like being the pope, pretty much the pinnacle of the profession. James has an ego, like all coaches, and he loves it. The head coach at USC is way down in the sports hierarchy there these days with 2 NFL teams and LeBron and the stars on the lakers and clippers. James won’t be the man in LA like he is in PA. Plus I think he will win more at PSU!

Not sure about any of that. But at USC there's a 50 percent chance he gets fired by 2022. Zero percent chance of that in his current job.

So far. Who knows, but 3-4 years is a long time from now. Fat Charlie looked like a great hire in South Bend coaching Brady Quinn and the rest of Willingham's recruits, until it became apparent he couldn't develop kids and they went in the toilet. Day is literally driving the machine Meyer built...he just slipped in the driver seat and has kept it aloft with a transfer portal QB. Let's see what happens with the recruits he brings in and the assistants he hires. I suspect they'll be just fine, but time will tell. Day is unproven.

Everybody is unproven until they prove it. Ryan Day will be just fine.

Why did no one make it work at Bama before Saban? You still need the right coach. I'm fine with saying USC-Penn State are a wash but we can't claim USC is all about the past when we haven't won a title in over 30 years (actually let's say 25 because we were the best team in 1994).

Because Saban is Saban? How does that translate into the difficulty or ease of turning USC around?

What? The point was that if Franklin is as good as we claim (we want him to stay) then he is good enough to succeed at USC. Especially given how bad the Pac XII is.

I said nothing of the sort. Please reread my post.

Long ago? How old are you?

BTW, ND has been in the playoffs how many times in the past decade?

Give people credit when credit is due. There is nothing wrong about living in the real world.

Penn State has a great program, but there are other places that are incredible, and SC is one of them.

One last thing, you folks who have not been to many places don’t understand the incredible facilities and resources other programs put into football. Saban has a huge edge in salaries to assistants and His program is in a palace. Texas A&M has incredible facilities, ditto LSU, GA, tOSU.

Franklin knows this and he speaks to it often, if you bother to listen.
Yeah, except who wants to live in Tuscaloosa? Not me. And my kid goes there!

Sigh..reading comprehension ain't what it used to be.

Sigh is right.

You faked praise then cautioned us to "wait to see what happens with the recruits he brings in" (which is questioning his ability to recruit) and end with saying he's unproven--which is at least fair but you should know more about his recruiting history to question it. I can only read the words you write.

That’s silly, if recent history shows us anything it’s that USC and Texas and Florida and Michigan aren’t the slam dunk jobs they’re made out to be and even a good coach can fail at these places.

It takes a good coach, a good “fit “ and some luck.

You forgot to mention traffic from hell, dismal air quality, mudslides, wildfires, earthquakes, sky high taxes, streets littered with human feces, homelessness, English as a second language, front running fans, Sodom and Gomorrah level freakery....should I keep going?

What coaches at USC, Texas, Florida and Michigan are you referring to?

CJF was all the talk at the Catalina Wine Mixer.

I bought the sam's club Caterina 6-piece sectional couch last week. When unpackaging it, I said to my wife, "F#$%ing Caterina wine mixer." She didn't know what I was talking about, and I was devestated. Later in the day, my having worked at Enterprise came up, and I almost said "they gave me the tools" but I knew she wouldn't know what I was talking about. I briefly considered divorce. Then I realized no woman on earth has the patience or understanding to deal with me, considered myself lucky, and moved on.

I'll defend any team, including ours, that isn't given the credit they deserve. If nothing else, we know Day can recruit. I'm not even sure that's defending him.
You didn't even wait until game week vs. tOSU to show your colors. Just come up with a new username now and build your troll and get some sweet revenge 2020.

Still no clue what you're talking about. I can't acknowledge Day's recruiting success when someone else questions it? Why?
