Bearcat Open

Levi does not project as an NCAA scorer this season. He took himself to his back twice in the Zerban match. While one can argue that these opponents are solid wrestlers, they are not all-Americans.

I certainly wouldn't give up on him, given his stellar freestyle record. Facundo lost a couple of early matches during his redshirt year. But I don't see any argument against redshirting Levi this year.

Forrest and Lilledahl both at 125.

Forrest opens vs. Lehigh's 2x PA state champ Sheldon Seymour.

Another opening match at 125: Poulin vs. Ungar.
This Forest kid is going to be reported on for a decade on this board. He’s going to have 8-9 years of college wrestling.

Evans vs Wilson (Cornell) - R12

Evans with a slick single and quick finish. 2-0 early. Gets high and has to give an escape while Wilson was looking for a reversal. 2-1. Gets behind Wilson but cant finish. Single leg late and another quick finish and its 4-1 after one.

Evans escapes immediately and gets another TD. Really finishes TDs quick. Gets too high trying for a cradle, they both get to their feet, Evans throws a headlock and its another fall for Evans!

Anyone know the wrestleoff score between Beau and Evans?

No.

Haines vs Tarsi (Champ 2nd Round)

Collar ties with both men heavy on neck. Just a few half shots thru 1:30. Haines in on a leg, tries to reach across forgo the but doesn't get it. Haines in On another shot. Nothing. 0-0 after one.

Tarsi chooses bottom. Haines riding tough again. Puts in a boot. Has him completely flat. Lots of pressure from top. Armbar. Gets a little high and Tarsi is out with 0:25 to go. Haines was pressuring hard and just got high. I didn't we a stall call but there should have been one.

Haines up and out in 7 secs. 1-1. Haines takes a shot. Nothing. Half shots from both. Haines working a front headlock on the mat and they go OOB. Tarsi in deep in a single. Good scramble from Levi. Stalemate. Haines in on a single, switches to double and takes him down to his back just before time expires. With the riding point, it's 4-1 final.
Maybe there's a reason Bearclaw is wrestling 157 so far? Tarsi is a Harvard guy with a losing career record.

since some of you can somehow watch the Bearcat, was wondering if and how Fernandes the HW from Cornell got hurt? Or after one match was it just decided to MF out the rest of the way, which seems to be common practice now?
He was limping a bit after his TF victory. I'm sure they are taking no chances with him. He missed time with a knee last year.

I don't think a loss to Zerban has to be explained away by anything and is that out of alignment with Levi's results. Hes got a very close "put it on him" win over Paddy who probably was a top 20ish guy if he was eligible to be ranked. And a win over NQ Cerniglia in which Cerniglia got hurt in the turk off the initial TD. If Levi got by Zerban I figured he would have a real test with Cerniglia this time around.

Zerban is a solid kid who won Fargo in HS I think and won a college tourney last year as a freshman.

D1 wrestling is hard, especially in your first couple of months let alone your first weekend. Levi will get a shot at Zerban or Cerniglia in the consys.
My bad...no full wrestlebacks here. Levi can't face Cerniglia or Zerban in consys.

Things got chippy at the end of Joe Lee's last match. They went out of bounds and the other wrestler kept wrestling well after the whistle. They were off camera, but they hit something. Joe was slow to return and gave a hard swipe to the head on the restart. Ref blew it dead and made them shake hands.

Completely the ref's fault. He was on the opposite side of the mat from where they went out of bounds. It was very odd how he didn't go where the action was.

Anyone else know what Ball was upset about after his match (a R12 win)? I only caught the end.

Young guys can be inconsistent. It comes with youth. Mendez, Bouzakis, and Haines all lost this weekend. It doesn’t mean they won’t be better and more consistent come February or March. In fact, I’d count on it.

Pierce vs Zarif (SF)

Zarif in deep but Pierce fights it off. Pierce in deep... long scramble... OOB. Pierce in deep again on a single near edge but cant finish. Stalemate. 0-0 after one with good action from both wrestlers.

Zarif chooses bottom. Gets to his feet but returned by Pierce. OOB. Same sequence and OOB again. 32 secs have gone by. To his feet again and again OOB. 1:00. Again to his feet and returned. Gutsy ride. To his feet again and again a mat return. OOB. 0:28 to go. Pierce gets him flat and rides him put. 0-0.

Pierce chooses bottom. Out in 12 secs. Deep shot by Zarif. Scramble. Stalemate. 1:29 to go. Point to Pierce for Zarif hitting Pierce's head. Ref was pissed; I hadnt noticed. Pierce defends a Zarif shot and gets behind for the TD. 4-0 with 30 secs to go and RT secured. Pierce rides him out for the 5-0 win. On to the finals!

JLee vs Ebert (Consi 4)

Lee with a nice counter double and its 2-0 early. Rides for 30 secs before OOB. Ebert to his feet on restart and escapws. 2-1. Lee in on a single. Switches to a double gets him on his backside and its a TD. 4-1. OOB. Ebert to his feet on restart and Lee cuts him. 4-2. Lee again in om a single. There's a scramble and a stalemate. Lee stuffs a shot and smothers him for another TD. 6-2 after one.

Lee chooses neutral. Action slows. Lee stuffs a shot, gets behind and brings him to the mat for two. 8-2 now. Ebert to his feet on a restart and Lee cuts him. 8-3 after two.

Ebert chooses top. Interesting. Lee tries to stand off whistle but is quickly flattened. Surprised no stall call. Flattened entire period. 8-3 is how it ends.

After beating Evans 9-7 in the 1st round, Cornella has won by first period fall, second period tech fall and first period fall. He was 5th at U20 Worlds a few months ago.

Pierce will face The One Who (still) Got Away in the finals.

Jude Correa (Seminary sophomore) WBF to reach the 5th place match at 197. His loss was 5-1 to Cochran.

A good time to remind everyone that WS had Evans in the top 20 last year, at 133.

If he can make it back down to 133 next year he’ll be a pretty damn good replacement for RBY.

Nice first period fall for Levi in his final match. He gave up the initial TD on a merkle (Levi was in a tripod) and then went to work.

Evans was dominant in his last match as well, taking a MD and wrestling agrressively throughout the tourney.

Yup - my bad, it was 5th. Levi showed all the signs of a tough cut. First 3 matches slow (2 Decisions then a SV loss), then last 3 matches ... full gas tank (MD, TF, FALL)

I'm not remotely worried about the kid. He will be great and you can bet he will do the right things to handle the cut if he is the guy.

Pierce bested by Shapiro in the finals. Shapiro was the #2 or 3 overall recruit last year and a cadet world champ in 2021. Pierce wrestled him tough, losing by a major decision. Great tourney for Connor!
