Bearclaw over J. Lee

Though the spot is Barraclough’s for now, I would imagine that this could be a very fluid situation that will constantly be monitored by coaches until a final determination is made next semester.
It will depend on whether Barraclough is wrestling as he's being coached and having success.
Don't be surprised if Barraclough clamps down on this opportunity like a vice.

Certainly could go either way. I just don’t think a final determination will be made until much later in the season.

Here is my take. If it is still unsettled a month or two from now it is most likely because Barraclough has struggled a bit and hasn't taken ownership. It won't be because Barraclough is having success, yet there is a sense Lee could achieve even greater.
So I am hoping this is a done deal, and moving forward there won't be a reason to revisit the 157 starting spot.

Per Brantt, Bearclaw beat Bartlett in the wrestleoff last year but Cael still sent Beau to Big Tens (which obviously is because Cael thought Beau had a better shot at qualifying for nationals than scoring than Claw)

Barraclough obviously took that as motivation to get even better. I think it's been said the kid is naturally a 157, he probably stayed at 149 because it was his best shot into the lineup last year.

Final challenges Bartlett beat Barraclough and Verkleeren to earn the spot for B1G’s.

Kade Moss definitely started for us though, AND won us a scuffle.
I think Kade Moss is a better comparison as he was also a Utah 4 timer but never started for us. Not all state titles are equal, PA =/= UT. Teasdale didn't pan out for other reasons.
He started more than a couple of duals for PSU. I am assuming "Us" means PSU. He won a few as I recall.....had a winning record as I recall. 3-1 in Duals for PSU one year. Pinned Dean Heil. Not exactly a total bust :)

Pop quiz who was our starter at 141 between Zain's redshirt year and Gulibon moving up?

Barraclough had two one point losses last year. One to Thomas who ended up taking third at NCAAs. The other to Kanen storr a fifth year senior, mulitple time National qualifier ranked as high as fifth last year. Kid was 18-3 on redshirt. HS Four time State champ (I know its Utah). Still a freshman (roster lists him as Sophomore but last year did not count so he should be a freshman this year). If he is the starter come March, I think we will be just fine.

Not interested in close losses. They get you no points at nationals.

One good career win -- beat Lock Haven AA Kyle Shoop at one of the NLWC events. That's a good starting point. Wrestle like that consistently and he can be pretty good.

I mean apparently he majored Joe Lee, that's a pretty good win I'd say :)

I would be surprised if Barraclough isn't the starter for the duration of the season. He wrestled really well his redshirt year and most likely has made a jump in ability since then. Interesting sidenote, he is majoring in Biomedical Engineering.

Going to root the same for whomever steps on the mat in the blue singlet with white belt stripe in Rec Hall all season long. There all somebody's son with a common dream.

Besides, surely we all recognize wrestle offs don't matter, and Cael declares the starters both arbitrarily and capriciously. ;)

Plus Shoop made his living and earned his AA on top, he wasn't very strong in neutral. Obviously not to say Bearclaw can't be good, but a folkstyle win over Shoop would hold way more stock than FS.

This summer when we were speculating about the starting lineup, I recall Roar alluding to a surprise starter. Could this have been it?

If Edsell continues to wrestle deep into the season, he would be another possibility.

I know we all have our fantasy line-up but maybe Cael has a different plan.

Interestingly, Edsell is the only potential starter listed @65 in the Formal Match Notes posted on "gopsusports.com". Multiple wrestlers are listed as potential starters at 25 (Shunk and Meredith), 57 (Barraclough and Lee) and 97 (Dean and Beard).

Terrell has the cooler name, there's that!
This was going to be my contribution as usually I just listen to whatever @El-Jefe says about actual wrestling.

Bearclaw / The Claw is a fantastic name that I cannot wait to yell after his first big upset.

Seems like some are down on the 'Claw so I will up my enthusiasm. Shoutout to @82bordeaux for the early scouting report and write up. Great guy to root for and doesn't mean the end of Joe (Boring Name) Lee!

It seems Joe Lee has not solved his biggest issue - an inability to get out from bottom. Imo, there are two essential skills for almost any wrestler, especially at the college level - neutral wrestling and getting out in the bottom position. Without both of those, you'd better be other-worldly in some other aspect.

Tell me @matter7172 is not Tom Ryan without telling me @matter7172 is not Tom Ryan

Hopefully Bearclaw is good to go for the Collegiate Duals because he will have a really good gage of his abilities there. Two NQs on our side (Connor Brady from VT and Colton Yapoujian from Cornell) as well as Jacori Teemer.
