Bearclaw over J. Lee

If Joe didn't have a brother named Nick Lee, would you feel differently about these results based on what you have seen from Joe thus far at Penn State?
If Barraclough had done to Bucknell kid what Joe did to him a year ago, I would be very excited, sure.

Who are you asking?

I’m sure some are pulling for Joe, some for ‘Claw, some for whomever earns the spot, and some for whomever they believe has the highest tournament-scoring potential.

And no sample from this board will necessarily give an accurate reflection of the PSU fan population as a whole.

I see little importance in the answer to your question. [Of course, we all know why you ask.]

Your words.....".No open tournaments this year" No asterisk. No disclaimer. But by all means......wordsmith all you want. Moving the goalposts is clearly a specialty :)

I'm not moving anything - PSU has no Open Tournaments on their schedule as they have in the past (often wrestled as a team in both the Keystone and Southern Scuffle) - PSU also entered unattached wrestlers in these Scheduled Tournaments such that they often acted as a form of wrestle-off at some weights (Cassar wrestled McCutcheon at Keystone while PSU wrestled Tournament as a team.... Brady Berge versus Verkleeren at Keystone Classic..... etc....). PSU is not scheduled to participate in any tournaments as a team this year, so the wrestlers at these highly contested weights won't have the opportunity to determine it on the mat at a tournament as they have in the past.

Also, I'm pretty sure Rasheed took the starting job from AC at The Scuffle where PSU was wrestling as a team and AC was wrestling attached and SR unattached. AC lost in one of the Semi-Finals if I remember correctly (wrestled back to take 3rd) and SR won the Tournament, again if I remember correctly. Wrestlers won't have these opportunities to determine it on the mat in these tournaments where PSU has wrestled as a team and entered unattached wrestlers at some weights....

I don't believe either the Southern Scuffle, or the Keystone Classic, are open tournaments.

It's been almost 2 years since I told you guys that Barraclough was going to be a kid to be reckoned with.

I think Willie needs to bring me on board. The plan is coming together...

So who’s next, oh great Knowzadumbass?

The Scuffle I believe is open. You can go unattached. Keystone Classic is not, it's a team competition.

I think it also had to do with how SR was winning. He was pinning everyone in the first period by cradle.

This summer when we were speculating about the starting lineup, I recall Roar alluding to a surprise starter. Could this have been it?

If Edsell continues to wrestle deep into the season, he would be another possibility.

I know we all have our fantasy line-up but maybe Cael has a different plan.

You can only enter one scoring wrestler (i.e., the wrestler participating in the team competition), but you can enter additional wrestlers unattached (how else would it be possible for Cassar and McCutcheon.... Berge and Verkleeren.... etc..[there are many other examples] to wrestle each other at Keystone Classic?).

Yea, he pinned his last 3 opponents to win the SS Title - Cassar was the starter at the time and entered as PSU's "attached" (i.e., team scoring) wrestler, but he lost in Semis. Rasheed displaced him as starter after winning SS Title. Here's a summary of the event - hit the following link:

Note, the article mentions that Anthony Cassar had been the starter for Penn State for the portion of the season prior to the SS. Also note that it states that Rasheed was not the only PSU wrestler wrestling "unattached" to make the Championship match - Nick Lee also did it.

Agreed. It's still very early but if Edsell keeps impressing, he could get the nod in March. I don't think Cael pulls Facundo's shirt unless he sees at least a 5 team point differential. Alex will need to win an open against some stiff competition between now and then. I am pretty sure Cael mentioned sending guys to the Midlands and the Scuffle.

It would be a bit of a shocker if in March we field both Barraclough and Edsell, who would have guessed? I put the odds at 10-20%.

Wouldn’t be shocked to see Barraclough in March. Would be surprised to see Edsell and think it would say a bit more about where Facundo is at at the time.

Well this is going to be great to watch play out. Right now Alex has an 86% bonus rate against some relatively weak competition, and I think he really did not fully understand the new OT rules in his only loss. That said I doubt he is top 8ish caliber right now, and that is probably what Cael needs to see to pull his shirt. By next year we will be talking high AA for sure.

I expect him to be on a pretty steep upward trajectory and get his shirt pulled, but it really feels great knowing we have some 'quality' depth at both 157 and 165, and can likely qualify slots with that depth.

I will continue to wait with baited breath for Facundo, but I really like the larger back story at both weights.

How much fun is it going to be to see Lee, Edsell, and Barraclough navigate through some top 20 kids over the next 2 months. We are going to learn a lot about growth, potential, and I am primed to be surprised by at least one of them.

unlike last year, there really is no rush for Facundo either. Given the so-so first weekend (no need to overstate it, but that loss is not indicative of a guy ready to score ncaa pts right now), no reason to pull his shirt until you see where he's at heading into BIG dual season. He'll get plenty of qualifying matches regardless and you also give an unheralded guy like edsall some nice time in the starting lineup which is good for morale imo.

Aw man. Someone let the “eight scoring wrestlers” out of the bag last time, and now you divulge the “5 team point differential”. We shouldnt keep broadcasting Cael’s secrets into other teams’ binders like that! :)

That is also only if those extra points might make a difference in the team race.

Though this team race is gonna be really tight. My first thought is seeing BOTH Barraclough and Edsell is highly unlikely, but who the Hell knows?

Which might also be influenced by what's happening in Iowa. They're wrestling a true freshman at 125 attached.
