Black Knight Invitational 11/19 on Flo

Interesting quarterfinal match with Barraclough and Lee. Another weight where PSU has TWO backups that would likely be very competitive if they were the starter.

Barraclough was dominating Matt Lee 7-1 in 2nd with over two mins riding time. There’s a restart for some reason (Barraclough was dominating too much on top?) and Lee hits a switch to a cradle and now it’s 7-7 going into 3rd.

Cassella with opening TD but then quick reversal by Messenbrink. 3-2 Cassella early.

Cassella #21 per Intermat.

Messenbrink cuts him after a long ride. Then gets TD. 5-4 Messenbrink with 1:30 RT after one.

Messenbrink with a Peterson. 11-4 now.
Stall call on Cassella as Messenbrink hammering on top. And then a second stall maybe 30-40 secs later.

12-4 Messenbrink after two with 3:11 RT.

Messenbrink a little sloppy being aggressive on feet in 3rd. Almost gives a TD but successfully defends. Messenbrink TD makes it 15-4. Lets him up.. TD. 18-5. Cuts him. 18-6. TD and cradle. Cassella choked out? 25-6 final.

Hell. We can take -20 points at 125 this year and still blow away the field. It’s not desperation mode at all. It’s just shocking to me that a seemingly healthy Howard is so lost. I watched this kid in HS a bunch and can’t believe what I’m seeing of him
He missed 2 folk seasons and only had an abbreviated Covid shortened season as a true freshman while wrestling hurt , this is his first time competing in a long time and first time competing with 2 healthy shoulders since the beast of the east his senior year of HS, ask Anthony cassar how long it takes to trust your shoulders and body again after being injured for so long , he clearly scared right now to really use that shoulder , it was really obvious at journeyman..the kid has stuck It out this long to get healthy , give him some time to build that confidence back up like cassar needed to. We re gonna cruise to a team title so give Robbie atleast half the season to get on track and if he can’t we have Davis who looks ready to go right now but no need to rush. Come on this penn state not Iowa we win titles in march not November

Wow, Cassella is no slouch. That’s impressive! Trying not to get too excited or over-reactionary, but 10 AA’s is definitely a possibility.

It might be better to start Davis now and let Robbie gain confidence in the tournament circuit: Sending him out there right now to get poor results in dual meets will take an even worse toll.

Davis has earned the spot.

It took Cassar 4 matches to knock off the #10 wrestler in the country in his return to the mats.

These Howard to Cassar comparisons are ridiculous.

There is no one in this field that’s a good measuring stick. He will crush Fish unless BearClaw takes him out first
Actually, Mitch M versus Fish would be another good data point. Fish was pretty tough toward the end of last season. Fish lost to Facundo 1-3 in OT in the PSU-MSU dual meet, than upset #4 seed Ramirez of Cornell at the NCAA tourney. So not really a fish on the mat.

Just watched Steen v Howard. That was a fun scrap. To think that is happening in the room everyday is pretty cool. If Steen is undersized though then Howard is too just by the eye test and no one seemed to have an advantage strengthwise.

Barr over Vanadia 9-5. Not that it matters, but I am wondering why Vanadia was the higher seed. Both true freshman. Barr the bigger recruit. Vanadia with two losses (by fall and TF) in the young season at the Clarion open.

Davis has 3 competition dates left before he is no longer shirting. So there's only so long we can use this strategy. Because once Davis' shirt is burned, he's not sitting.

And Messenbrink was the #7 seed. Doesn't make any sense, but like you say it also doesn't matter. It's strange, but also rather meaningless.

Hard to believe it won’t be nine if we stay healthy. But I’m not seeing an AA at 125 right now.

Not that it matters even a little bit, but are there any team scores listed yet?
