Bo Moving Up?

I've heard to not 100% rule out a 174 Mouse. It would be interesting. He last wrestled below 182 as a HS SO (6 yrs ago). That makes me somewhat skeptical. But never say never, I guess.

He would need to shed 10 lb of largely muscle during an offseason in which he'd likely be trying to strengthen his back.

It's also unclear if it would help his performance. If he can handle the cut, he'd have a strength advantage and a quickness disadvantage. Hard to say if that's a net positive or negative.

I don't know if I accidentally reported your post, but if I did, my apologies. Fat fingers on a "smart" phone...

You might see if you can go to the post and de-select the Report button.
Or, perhaps go to edit mode to see if you can do it there.

Iirc, it is a reversible option.

If true, pretty interesting for who goes to 174 and who gets bumped from 184 (which looks relatively stronger than 184), about which it's tough to speculate, but worth pointing out that Bo had trouble with bigger guys at 86kg (which, granted, is 5 lbs heavier than 184) in FS this spring. And since our resident insider definitively stated that Mark Hall was going to redshirt, 174 becomes a real question mark because it doesn't seem like the best weight for Cenzo. Cutch has always looked small to me at 184 so maybe he'd be the answer. Geno looks like he was already cutting to hold 165 so maybe him, but I'd also think the staff would want someone there that they're reasonably sure will AA, given the likely improvement at Iowa and tOSU.

Who bothered BO at 86 kg in FS not named Zahid Valencia? Nickal would be fine at 184lbs

I remember thinking he looked particularly small against Kevin Steinhaus at the last chance Olympic trial qualifier. I think he lost to Nick Heflin there too but I didn't see that.

That's right, I think they're both out of eligibility. Also, BO will get bigger if going at that weight and not be wrestling up like he did for that event. I forget what he weighed in there, but wasn't a full 86 kgs I promise

Just to be clear I'm not doubting his ability. He's my favorite guy on the team to watch, and seems like an unbelievable kid to boot. I even believe that he can take out Gabe Dean. But it seems clear that it's going require a bunch of additional pounds from where he was a few months ago and some time to get used to it.

I got you tikk, I didn't take it as that and agree with you about adding to the frame.

Yep. He definitely looked small, but that might as well have been 197. Those guys were probably over 200 by the time they were wrestling

May depend upon whether a student/athlete is enrolled as a full-time student on scholarship.

Wrestling with the NLWC, while not enrolled, would not start the clock.
I asked because I don't believe summer is considered a full time semester due to the shortened time span. Don't know all the rules though. Maybe the trigger is enrollment and not full time.

Very interesting thread. So, when does more light get shed on this news ?

Do we have to wait until November ? Just asking for a timetable when we know about weight changes and red shirts.

Not sure on the summer semester but enrollment FULL time is what starts the 5 year clock.

As to Nickal it seems a lot here are treating it as gospel that he is going 184 this season and IMHO it is nothing more than speculation. The OP reported that Bo said he is moving up this year, which is pretty vague. If he meant he was moving up to 184 I would think he would just say that.

Jeremiah Johnson approved lineup. I like it.

Might try to find that movie somewhere this weekend. Love that flick. That's a great semi-smile by JJ.

I'm pretty certain his eligibility clock begins once the wrestling team picks up the tab ... even if it's part -time.

IMO, the only way he could be taking classes and still be eligible for a gray shirt would be if he is enrolled both part-time and paying his own freight.

The 5-year eligibility clock starts the moment a student-athlete starts classes full-time.

A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation within five calendar years from the beginning of the semester or quarter in which the student-athlete first registered for a minimum full-time program of studies in a collegiate institution

As I understand the rules, financial aid is not available until student-athletes spend at least one year in residency at a school. Mark Hall and Nick Suriano, for example, are not yet available for summer term aid.

Summer financial aid may be awarded only to attend the awarding institution’s summer term, summer school or summer-orientation program, provided the following conditions are met: (Revised: 1/10/90, 1/10/92)
(a) The student has been in residence a minimum of one term during the regular academic year;
(b) The student is attending a summer term, summer school or summer-orientation program and financial aid is administered pursuant to Bylaw 15.2.8.1.2, 15.2.8.1.3 or 15.2.8.1.4
;

The other note re. summer school and financial aid...once a student-athlete is eligible, it can be administered, but only in the same ratio that full-time aid is administered (a .5 ride means half of a summer terms expenses can be paid as financial aid), and that summer-term aid does not count against the 9.9.

Student athletes to be eligible for scholarship $$ during the summer term is 6 hours according to the NCCAs rules.

Which Article and Rule # is that under? Thanks
I don't know the article or rule number, I just know several D1 wrestlers who have attended summer term at different D1 schools straight out of HS and in order for them to receive their scholarship $$, they had to take a minimum of 6 hours.

Here's how the rankings might look. I think Nickal can place as high as 2nd, and Hall could win it all.

1. Dean
2. Dudley
3. Valencia
4. Martin
5. Nickal
6. Boyd
7. Brooks
8. Miklus
9. Zavatasky
10. Nate Jackson (up from 174)
11. Abounader
12A. Dechow
12B. Weatherspoon (up from 174)

174
1. Jordan (up from 165)
2. Epperly
3. Hall
4. Realbuto
5. Valencia
6. Ramos
7. Crutchmer
8. Brunson
9. Meyer
10. Bernstein
11. Hammond
12. Schleifer

I'm a 3x tOSU grad and homer....but even I would not rank Martin higher than Nickal. Bo Nickal would probably win 8-9 out of 10 head to head. Even Martin stated Bo Nickal is the toughest opponent he ever wrestled. I dont think one Martin win (albeit on the huge stage) puts him above Nickal in any logical ranking system.
As a fan of the sport, I was really interested in a Bo J. vs. Bo N. matchup. But, a Bo Jordan vs Mark Hall 3 times next year also sounds very interesting.

So they'll take the hole at 165 instead of 18

Edit: Not a "hole" but Tan Man has three weights and two AA wrestlers, a choice needs made.

I'm of course preparing for this to get shot down but....when was the last time McCutcheon had to or tried to cut? Like, anything significant? I know he has a long history, back to HS, of being above 174 but...what about a swap? I know Cael usually prefers to avoid heavy cuts, but if they're all intent on BoNicks making the jump *this* year, when he's probably walking around near 184, maybe they're also interested to see what the 174 pound class might do for Mouse's stiff back? Anyway, I'd guess that Bo 174, Mouse 184 are probably their more natural sizes right now, but if Bo's coming out publicly that he's gonna try 184 *this* year, then I wouldn't be surprised if it's a two-way swap.

Further guesses:
- Wreck Hall still sits the 2017 tourney (in either CO or PA)
- Rasheed's gonna have a tough time cracking the lineup. Can't imagine he's much bigger than Bo, so I find 197 a non-reality due to both size & strength. And unlike many this summer, I have a super hard time believing that Rasheed can touch McCutcheon in the practice room. Unless.....b/c we haven't seen it since like 10th or 11th grade I think, McCutcheon pulls down to 174.

Yours in italics, super-curiosity about a 174-pound Matt McCutcheon, and if the Queen had nuts, she's be the King,
jp

I literally do not know, or even feel like I can predict, what will happen at 174, but of all the possibilites, the least likely scenario, I think, would be Mouse pulling down. Can't see it. I think if he wants to give 197 a shot, if Cassar cannot go, then that's the road more likely to take for a final year of action for Mouse. If not, then he is still a vital, important part of the team, just like all the other fellas. Sometimes it doesn't work out for the final year dream-scenario: Just last year the kid from Juniata high school, was on the team and an important member, but didn't figure into the medal stand come March, while he certainly DID have that shot, earlier in his career. Mouse is the man, and is a true Penn State winner and medal stand champion, whether he is one of the 10 guys we take into the B1G's this March, or not.

Bo decided to move up to help his freestyle career. He decided on what's best for Bo. That doesn't mean he gets the position. He still has to beat out Cutch for the spot. That's not going to be a given. If he loses he will have the option to go to 97 if he still feels he wants to wrestle heavier guys for freestyle. If not then he will have to cut back down to 74. Which he has another problem on his hands beating Rasheed. The result of this decision is going to be very interesting and could leave a top performer on the sideline.

So, you are saying Rasheed is going at 174 this season?

Seems possible but unlikely to me: He could not pull to 65 last year, and has added a ton of pure muscle mass now. If anything, he's headed to 197 right?

Sheez, what is so WRONG with just saying "Hey Man, I hope Mark Hall goes at 174 because he is an awesome wrestler and if he goes, we have an even better team!" I know, I know, that's just not the right thing to say, lmao. Of course, I want Rasheed to go JUST AS MUCH....dunno, its all good.

Nothing's in stone for us. Bo could be anywhere from 74 to 97. Cutch and Rasheed anywhere from 74 to 84. It's going to be a fight.
