Candid coaches. Overated/underrated.

The PSU team was genuinely elite in 2017. The PSU team was pretty good in 2016. The difference in success the two years was mostly luck.

Do you think Franklin deserves extra credit for Michigan losing to Iowa? PSU doesn't win the B1G otherwise. Personally I'm much more impressed with what Franklin put together in 2017 than 2016. Makes me very optimistic about the future. 2016 was fluky as hell.
Good God that's stupid logic. By your logic, the only way to win a conference championship is to go undefeated. Once you lose to someone, you have to rely on "luck".

So CBS asks 26 College Football coaches who is most overrated

You have 12 that share a certain racial background and 118 another.

So these 26 just somehow pick 2 from the 12 for this recognition.

Including a coach who has gone 11-3 and won the Big10 in 2016, then 11-2 in 2017, and since Oct 2016 has had only 3 heartbreak losses by 3,1,3 points to USC, OSU and MSU. Coach who recruits lights out, develops players athletically and academically and energized alumni, fans, lettermen, and and works 24/7 to excel.

So just a coincidence that Franklin and Taggart got picked by the 26 to be the uppity overrated coaches? How many of the 26 will have a job when this “overrated “ becomes first African American coach to win Division 1 National Championship in next 5 years?
Crabs in a bucket.

I don’t think any coach in America (except O’Brien) has any idea what Franklin was up against. How quickly they forget that PSU was supposed to be 2-10 for the next ten years. Not only is Franklin not overrated, what he’s done here puts him at the top of the college coaching list.

Why in the world would decent people participate in this kind of lame, 8th grade mean girls bs?

Ewwwww. He's overrated. Hell, at least you know who the mean girls are at the middle school. These people are anonymous.

And Ohio State wouldn’t have won the Big last year if we had beat MSU...I guess OSU was lucky last year. There are always games that help a coach win a championship that they did not coach in...that’s how division championships work.

And if a coach has time to fill out a survey like this, then they’re not doing a very good job of coaching.

Unbelievable "Lost to Michigan while ravaged by injuries" but Michigan losing last year to PSU without a starting QB doesn't count? What and hell do you think PSU's record would have been last year without your starting QB???
And who’s fault is the QB situation at Michigan? PSU would have been fine if their starter got hurt. OSU won a NC after losing their top two QB’s. It’s the coach’s job to have solid backup QB’s and Harbaugh always has a mess at the QB position.

You know who probably fills that out? Some grad assistant's assistant.

It sounds like someone on a fb message board.

The time spent on a survey has no bearing on the coaching ability. Stop reaching.
Wheres the proof that these are head coaches at all who fill this out. Hell, this sort of thing was probably in Zach Smith's job description .

OSU was very lucky to block a punt and turn the tide against PSU last year.

I would bet that Nick Saban didn’t have time to fill out a wasteful survey.
That's the kind of timewasting horseshit you farm out to staff. No coach worth a damn spent two minutes providing anonymous criticism/praise of his fellow coaches. It is the sort of thing that is probably a top priority in DJ Durkin's office.

If CFB is going to go all junior high on us, it is one more thing that needs to be skipped.

talking heads this morning addressing this. Talked about Ferencz being one of the most over rated. Then states "Iowa unfortunate to be in the same division as Ohio State and Michigan!" will it never end?

Grown men who are in the football coaching profession can be just as petty as junior high girls. You can substitute jealous for petty if you like.

I agree that all of this is a good bit of BS and talking head opinions are a dime a dozen, but it was interesting how quickly several writers came out on social media in support of CJF and commented how stupid that poll was.....

I suspect it has more to do with losing recruits and/or games & jobs to both coaches than any other reason. Jealousy, the green-eyed monster that is self-invented - invited - infecting - gangrenous.

Which all go well together with cowardly good old boy racism. It may be present day PC not to call jealous low self esteem racists what they are..... but there is no harm and a real benefit for doing so.

Sounds racist to me. Wasn't there another thread on this topic? Look, success breads jealousy. Take a similar anonymous poll among your coworkers, asking who's hot and who's not in the eyes of your boss. It's guaranteed to yield similar results.

McElroy blasted that poll this morning and totally praised the job Franklin's done.

Maybe they changed divisions around and didn’t tell anyone except the talking heads. Leaders and Legends are back!

I said this in the other thread, but I’ll repeat it here. This kind of information is the sort of thing Franklin can spin in a such a positive light in the living rooms of recruits. “Other coaches are afraid of an African American being successful.”

Don't forget, its the media.

There is a lot of angst over a political leader saying "the truth isn't the truth" yesterday. He is exactly right. If the truth is the truth there would be no lawyers and very few reporters/commentators.

My guess is that there was a poll taken and the most inflammatory comments used to create clicks and conversations. Who knows if the poll is being reported correctly or how the questions were phrased?

In the end, right now, Franklin is running one of the best programs in the country. PSU is ascending (which is much harder than maintaining). We could easily see big drops from tOSU, UM, and several programs outside the B1G.

Dokish pipes up in the replies. Doesn’t offer to fight anyone this time, disappointingly.

This whole thing is BS. I look at CJF and his overall results and can't think of 5 coaches I'd consider ahead of him for the job.

One thing I will say about JF is that he understands people. I’m sure his psychology background has helped him in this regard. The hiring committee wanted a “ football CEO” after their experience with BOB and that’s exactly what JF has been. He seems to have the ability to assess personalities and abilities and put them in places where they can succeed. Everybody saw what happened when the players bought in back in 2016. That squad probably had no business winning a conference championship that year from a developmental and roster standpoint.
BOB is a great coach, but I don’t think he had any interest in the parts of the job that didn’t involve direct coaching. That doesn’t work anymore in CFB.

I do not like the generalizations of bias claims that are out there. But this is the exact empirical data that should have a spot light turned on it. The stated statistics do make you wonder where the respondents were coming from. And I would hope that by holding the results up as an example may get some people to be a little more introspective.

Am I the only one who couldn’t give a single sh1t if anonymous coaches think Franklin is overrated? He’s winning on the field, he’s pulling in great recruiting classes, he’s an elite talent evaluator and is just as good at developing players, his players aren’t getting in trouble and he seems to be hiring great assistants. People are going to run out of excuses for why he is winning soon. He won at Vandy because everyone else sucked, he won the Big Ten because of a fluke play and receivers catching 90% of 50/50 balls, we won 11 games last year because we had Barkley.

Or.......
He could choose to not wade into the idiocy.

I’d guess he’d choose “Ignore”.
:)

I disagree. If he’s already mentioning becoming the first African American head coach to win a national championship to recruits, I would not doubt that he would point out how others don’t want him to.

I still have some doubts about Franklin's pure coaching ability, but in reality, he's much less involved in play calling and coaching individual players than his coaches. His is a CEO-like responsibility and perspective to make sure the overall organization is healthy and the brand is viable. With respect to the latter, he has more than exceeded my expectations while maintaining and even exceeding in some cases the standards initiated by Joe. With respect to the poll, I think the coaches' responses is more related to jealous, 'I could have done more with that there'....guess what, you're only not here, you didn't make the short list for consideration.
