David Taylor to Oklahoma State & related news

Seriously, from what I know about Nolf, I think he has too many ties to PA to accept a position like that. Besides, that would be walking into a minefield for a Penn State alum.
The wild card with Jason is: what happens when his wife's playing career ends?

It's also possible that Cael's successor has not yet enrolled in college.

You’re joking right? The “ties and old rivalries” is out the window for this kind of opportunity (and pay) Nolf would be in Iowa City to sign within 24 hours if offered this kind of job.

Just as a bunch of Gable's wrestlers ended up taking jobs at other schools, the same thing is going to happen with the PSU guys. There are only so many coaching positions at PSU and NLWC and the current staff has another 10 years of coaching in them.

That’s how you level the playing field 🥺

Like Gilman taking a job at OkSt?

They hated Gilman in Stilly. Apparently when he was young and exuberant, he told Smith to go F himself during a match.
That's good. Smith drew a lot of that kind of attention, probably from constantly working the refs ... Ashnault comes to mind too.

Still funny coming from a guy who wrestled for Terry Brands.

True fact: Jason Nolf is the only 2024 Olympic Trials finalist to live exclusively in PA. David was born in Wyoming and attended HS in Ohio. Zain was born in Wisconsin. Spencer was born in Colorado and attended Iowa.
Glad this is a "true fact", as today there is so much info presented as truth that is not factual.

I love all of the PSU wrestlers but David Taylor is still my favorite of all time. There's just something about his wrestling style, his personality, his approach to the sport, how much he helped PSU in the recruiting process, etc. that I've always loved and appreciated. In his own way, he helped get our dynasty off the ground and that's something we should always thank him for. If Cael was closer to the end of his career, David was my choice to succeed him assuming Casey didn't want the job.

It's been a tough month seeing him lose at the trials (and I LOVE AB too!) and then end up at one of our all-time rival schools. Because it predates Cael, many forget the passion with which we PSU fans hated Ok St when they were winning NCAAs regularly and rubbing it in in the process. God I hated some of their guys and loved to root against them. Johny Hendricks come to mind ...

But I don't understand some of the shots people are now taking at David like somehow getting a dream job is dissing PSU in the process. Let the man live his life! There is no opportunity at PSU for him right now to be a head coach and heading to Ok State is an incredible opportunity for him. Go David! As long as he finishes second every year, I wish him all the best ;-)

I personally think David will be an excellent HC and think anyone who believes his lack of experience is going to hinder him in any way hasn't been paying attention. He is a little Cael clone in terms of his approach and process and is driven to succeed. I think if you give him 3-4 years he will have his teams pushing us consistently for the top spot on the podium.

I also think David going to Ok State might be the first domino to fall in a series of HC moves to bring former PSU/NLWC wrestlers in to turn around top programs. I would be shocked if this move doesn't ripple through Iowa and even perhaps Michigan, Ohio State, etc. in the next few years as these programs try to step up to stay competitive. It's gonna be a wild ride going forward fellas and I for one am looking forward to seeing how many branches grow on the Cael coaching tree.

I don't understand why so many think that DT would be the logical Cael successor. Casey is far more deserving. Even Okie State realized that and offered him first. Case closed. I wish DT luck and 2nd place wishes..........but Casey is, by far......the better choice.

Raguson also (spelling)
Ragusin’s quote about Smith was hilarious

So you are telling us that the three ring binder originated in Colorado?

Excellent post, and I agree with this paragraph. Cael's coaching tree will expand rapidly in the next few years as schools hope to cash in on guys who have been in Cael's system. So get used to losing guys from the NLWC and team.

Braeden Davis reminds me a lot of Gilman. Has his emotions on his sleeve. Just have to reign that in and refocus it to more productive means. I wish Gilman would have had more time with Braeden.

I think the impact on PSU will be OSU recruiting the NE and nationally better. They already recruit Oklahoma well. Dont see any of the next 2 classes switching to OSU unless it’s any of the middle-upper weights since they won’t all get in the lineup.

Guys - DT is the adversary now. He barely mentioned Cael's name in the presser. We aren't ever dualing them let alone offering DT a ceremonious retirement. I hope we are instead introducing AB as an Olympic Gold Medalist and reminding everyone who he beat to make the team.
David Taylor is forever a Penn State legend. I will continue to applaud him and route for him whenever he is opposing other teams besides Penn State. I believe he deserves more than what your post says. Adsitionally, I will also pull for Ed Ruth, Vincenzo, Mark Hall and other distinguished alumni whenever it is appropriate.

I have been meaning to ask you, did you have a chance to wrestle for Coach Elling or maybe a little too young?

I was four years too young but I have regretted not being coached by coach Elling my whole life. He was a great coach and the high school wouldn't pay him his worth (still extremely low). Tom Elling was my hero back then and still is today even though I've never met him. He is a principled man by all accounts. Every couple years I ask if he's still alive and am always heartened that he is. Thanks for asking!

You were around in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s?

In my lifetime, it’s 11-7 PSU. And I’m old enough that I’m supposed to get a colonoscopy every year.

(JK OkSt fans)
I know you're just messin' but since I went to college:

Ok State:
NCAA champs in 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006
NCAA runners up 1983, 1984, 1991, 1992, 1997, 2013, 2016

Plenty to hate there. Particularly before Cael as mentioned.

Helluva coach, pretty terrific man. He and my father were friends, so every match he ever saw me wrestle I got critiqued. Never more than a handful of words, but my gosh he could tell you a lot in those handful of words. Saw him walking the floor at OTT and had the opportunity to chat for a few moments.

There were quite a few talented LH wrestlers at the end of the 70s and early 80s who missed out in getting the chance to wrestle for him.

I think his last year as coach was 1976 but could have been 1975. I started HS in 1979. Bill Bailey was junior high coach. He was pretty good. His daughter graduated with me.

@smalls103 and Adam Fellers had a pretty good back and forth on DT on their recent Rokfin show - Felters Facts and the Brain. About 53 minutes in, Fellers starts grilling Willie on a lot of topics we’ve been hashing out (RTC poaching, recruits, money, impact on other teams, etc). If you have Rokfin, check it out

It’s also must see for Fellers’ hat

Addressed a few things: They think DT killed the press conference (and he did) They think he's doing the right things immediately, building the RTC and setting culture, not going for an overnight portal fix. He isn't focused on facilities at all (doesn't seem to have been one his requests)

They don't think anyone that is an established starter at PSU leaves (no direct sources like a Levi/Kasak telling them "no way" but just a pretty strong guess). They said maybe a Ryder/Sealey leaves if they aren't the starter since DT can be an "extension of Cael's system that they committed to now"

Added they don't think it will happen overnight for David. They said Cael took 5 years to master his system before he won his first title and he also didn't have a prime Gable to walk in and compete with. They also added Cael now knows way more than he did when he first started. Let's not forget, Cael won 3 Big 12 titles in a row, grabbed 2 trophies (and a 5th) at Iowa State his first 3 years as a HC, which is nearly unprecendented at Iowa State. Kevin Jackson basically got 3rd with a team he inherited from Cael before falling out of the Top 20 basically.

Did they address why no one from PSU or NLwC has said congratulations to David ?
It’s a bit odd and very telling to me

The OSU board is consistently bringing up PJ Duke being a guy they might flip, is there any legs to that?
Seems like a pipe dream to me.
