Desanto to Iowa

Another year and another team brings in a transfer that will help them overtake PSU, but then the NCAA tourney happens and PSU is at the top once again. DeSanto is fun to watch (minus when he is trying to injure somebody) and a solid wrestler, but he is no McKenna. The one question nobody is asking is how will he do so far away from his support system at home?
Maybe Coe college is hiring again, jobs for Mom and Dad?

Well, the support system seems to be overrated because it didn't help at Drexel.

2 worst antics by wrestlers I saw at NCAAs was DeSanto and Stoll. Hopefully TnT can make those learning experiences, but lets just say Iowa fans are building themselves a very nice glass house.

3. This might force Terry to develop some self-restraint, which ultimately is good for Iowa if it makes the sport less interesting.

Terry is finally going to grow up? My lasting image of him is him running out of BJC to avoid the handshake line at the end of the dual this year. That's something I associate with the behavior of a child, not a grown man.

2. Rutgers seems like it would've been a better fit for him, personality wise. But he said his goal is to become a nat'l champ and he thinks Iowa can get him there. I can't disagree that his chances of progression are much higher under Brands than Goodale.

Agreed about the wrestling progression, although I haven't seen a ton of Iowa guys progress much under TnT to be honest. Goodale is sitting on a problem. I don't see Suriano winning a national championship at Rutgers in the next two years. It could happen, but I think it is unlikely. Ashnault is probably more unlikely. So Goodale will be sitting there with the two top wrestlers (record-wise) in NJ high school history and zero championships between them. It's got to hurt a message that "we can get you to the top of the podium".

Overall, as I alluded to earlier, I'm having a hard time reconciling the theme of having to keep Austin close to home with the Iowa choice, but I wish everyone the best.

I was speaking more about life away from home in general and not the wrestling part of it. Going for a long weekend trip in Iowa is one thing, but moving there is a whole different animal. The rumors were that he chose Drexel due to the close proximity to his parents.

DeSanto was home schooled in high school. His mother said in an article that he felt that the social part of high school was a waste of time. Given how we saw how he handled adversity in the post season (in both EIWA's and NCAA's), this will be an interesting social experiment. As Micic put it, the kid didn't know how to handle an a$$ beating. He'll certainly get a lot of that in Iowa's room. I hope it works out for everyone.

IF hes getting beaten up in practice by SLee, and he doesnt have success in the B10 like he thinks he should this could be a fail of epic proportions.

I hope not.

I want the best for the kid as long as it doesnt impact the nits, but the more I think about it, the more my inner debbie downer comes out. Yesterday, I couldnt find an issue with this move, but the more I hear and read, causes my doubt.

With a possible (5) from Pa. I like that PA can save the program.

Slightly frustrating when Iowa is starting more PA wrestlers than PSU though. What's wrong with those kids? It could be worse, the thought of Spencer as a Buckeye ...

Can't you find your own forum, mini-hawkeye? There should be something for bored trolls out there, right?
Hey my first post to you was the way you said the bs about the Brands.
Have you ever had any doings with them?.Know them personally? Also all this bad talk about Densato so you know all about what he is dealing with him...Good for you is all I can say..
Spencer Lee and TnT will be the best thing for this kid, if he can't handle his problem with them then it will be a sad deal...One other thing the Brands boys got their Dad over his drinking problem I'm just dam tired of all the folks running them down when hell they don't even know them..I have meant many wonderful Penn State fans at Naionals and Big Tens and had my pop with them while they had there drinks. Will be my last post on this subject ok. Have a good day be safe.

This shouldn't necessarily shock anyone but as much as this could be good, it could also end badly. I've never seen a Brands take a loss even remotely well so it would be hard for them to reprimand Desanto for some of the same antics they have pulled (and their team currently pulls) over their respective careers. (Do as I say not as I do type thing). I do think that Spencer, in spite of his coaches, has been nothing but class and along with Kemerer, Murin etc. could instill those kind of values but they also shouldn't be tasked with containing a peer. I really liked Desanto before all the NCAA antics and sincerely hope that he finds himself and realizes those things are unacceptable even if it's not frowned upon by your coaching staff.
I think Desanto would have done better at a number of different schools but ultimately we will see how this turns out in time. I'm also glad Perry of EMU didn't go to Iowa as the kid seems like a great human and I really want to root for him.

Just a month or two ago their message board fans hated his guts. Now they love him.

Good pickup for Iowa, though.

I agree with this. Those who say Spencer is the cure for what ails Desanto are making a LOT of assumptions and putting a ton of pressure on an 18 year old kid.

I assume that Spencer was at least consulted on the transfer, & perhaps given the chance to veto it. The fact that he (presumably) agreed to let this experiment take place in the Iowa room is further credit to his high character. But to discount the potential for injury to Lee or others with Desanto in the room strikes me as unwise in light of his history and apparent challenges. I sincerely hope the more optimistic posters are right.

So will HR re-watch the Vision Quest with an open mind now that he is one of their own? I hope it works out for all involved, but am skeptical. Will someone cue me as to when we can make HR Slush fund jokes?

Iowa had 150-165 team points before DeSanto. This may push them into record territory.

Iowa wins national championships in April then funny things happen on the way to March. In like a Hawkeye, out like a pigeon.
