Football DL Fred Hansard apologizes to Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa

Very appropriate move on the part of Fred Hansard.

When it happened and I saw the replay, it seemed that Tagvailoa took a few too many unnecessary steps into the PSU sideline (i.e. could have stopped and not gotten into the players area), but none the less it would have been more sportsmanlike to just catch him and hold him up.

But really, this PSU team right now needs some players on the field that play with an edge and play to the limit of the rules. Between the lines, and not out of bounds.....

Granted, it should have been a penalty, and we got away with one there. I thought Hansard looked like he had an immediate "oh crap, I shouldn't have done that" moment as soon as he hit him. Ironically, Lia's flop (he absolutely exaggerated it) cost MD more than the the Hansard push because the next play ended up being a throw away.

You think he wrote that or an AD PR expert?
I get your point but it only really matters if it is genuine. Looked to me like hansard was kind of shocked he was there and pushed back to protect himself. But he's got to be aware. I'd have thrown a flag but I think the ref realized he was taken by surprise. You can see both PSU players quickly move to help him up.

This was my impression when I saw it, both live and on replay. I have no idea why TT didn't slow down a bit (he wasn't hit by a PSU player on the field of play and was under his own control) and I think FH was shocked too and just reacted as I'm sure I would if someone was about to collide with me at full speed. The result was exacerbated by the size disparity between the two.

Did I just hear this correctly? Hansard is suspended for the first half of the Michigan game?

Yes, that's what I saw from today's CJF press conference recap. I think it was good on the coaches to have Hansard put out this statement and to send the message that they won't tolerate this crap. It was pretty classless to push Talia. I know Hansard got caught up in the moment and likely didn't have malicious intent behind it, but he did it, it was a bad look and is worthy of being addressed by the coaching staff. Any punishment should be relatively minimal and I think suspension for a half seems reasonable.

I disagree. Massive penalty on the team, who wasn’t involved

Other than the legalese (which is unfortunately necessary), this is the best sign for PSU football I've seen in forever.

We all make mistakes and do stupid things - admitting them, apologizing and moving on is part of what makes us good people.

...except in this particular instance he barely ever sees more than a few snaps? Obviously there are those who would (rightly imho) say that the punishment should be the same even if it was a key player, so your point is certainly valid in that respect...it may seem a bit of an overreaction if we were talking about a starter...ironically if the penalty was called nobody would expect a suspension 🤷‍♂️...it is not rare for a game to have at least one personal foul penalty and the only suspensions are for targeting.

...but based solely on this particular player's previous playing time, the suspension is "massive" only with respect to him being 300+ pounds. ;)

I have access to the MD 247 pay site. They have multiple threads on the subject. Their thoughts range from no apology/no discipline needed to one game suspension to suspended for the rest of the season to (no kidding) criminal charges.

I will be honest, I really think he should be suspended for a game. Edge, In heat of the game or not, it's pretty inexcusable.

I can only imagine this board if a Michigan player did that to Clifford.

If a Michigan player (let's call him #53) did this to Clifford, there would be ...

1. no penalty
2. no apology from #53 to Clifford
3. no call to Harbaugh asking what punishment was being given to #53
4. unceasing replays on BTN and ESPN with the talking heads discussing how Clifford "flopped" while #53 was merely "defending himself" on the sideline
5. calls to establish an "anti-flopping" penalty [with some seeking to make it retroactive]

Basis for my reasoning: 29 years in the Big Ten and the repeatedly un-flagged hits on players who wear the generic plain white helmets .

I don't agree. it looked worse than it was. the QB was on his heels trying to stop and hansard, 100 lbs heavier or whatever, put his hands up to protect himself. Not good. Not good optics, but wasn't egregious IMHO.
