Edmond Ruth

Turner went NC State. I think Guzzo was college coach who was originally from Easton I think.

That's Thad Turner while at Lehigh University. Thad later became the Engineers's (o'oops Mountain Hawks) Head coach in some of Lehigh's best years.

Said it last year....I want Edmond Ruth really BAD...He is exactly like Ed and will get better and better each year....HE IS A FREAK !!!! Will be GREAT in college. Hope Cael goes after him really hard !!!! District 3 is the toughest in the state of Pa....

Come on man!!! D7 is where it's at!!!! FULL COURT PRESS!

different immediate family from the Neil Turner (now at mat town) although he had a son named Thad

Just picked up* his first District title as a sophomore at 152 pounds. Went 5-2, 15-3, 9-3 in his 3 matches. Similar to his brother a very good raw athlete who could probably do with some better coaching.
If Edmond signs with PSU he will be a 4 time National Champ....The sky is the limit for this young man...Just needs a great Coach...Like Ed.....Edmond is a FREAK on the mat.....Bring back Ruuuuuth !!!!

Stop It, enough Spyker. I thought in the past you were a good dude, these days you're over the top in every thread and have a comment for everything. Reign it in a bit

If he doesn't sign with PSU, it will probably be because Cael disagrees with his ability to win 4 national titles.

I like spyker but I get why he wears on people. that being said in my opinion the only time he has been reigned in was when he was banned. So either you have to ignore him, or deal with him.

Thanks, Took your advice. Wanna just read about wrestling this time of the year, not the sideshow

...Scott Turner was the Freedom wrestler who won the states and the 1988 NCAAs...gave up only 1 point in the entire tournament... was named OW...
...he made his wrestling "living" by wrestling on his knees ... almost impossible to take him down...every Guru said it was a weak position but Scott was a master at it...

He gave Tim Krieger of ISU one of the only two collegiate losses Krieger had. Turner beat Krieger in OT in the 1988 NCAA finals.

Like you too dunke and always respect your post...Hey we all had a blast when Ed wrestled for us yelling his name. I just know his brother is going to be just as good in college. I would hate to see him with anyone but us...Where he should be...That's all....

Agree, but of late it seems that Spyker has been off his meds. Even more preposterous than normal. And the quantity and frequency of the BS may be at an all-time high.

shots at state titles this year - PA AAA

Perhaps the favorite
106 - Cerniglia
120 - Chlebove
138 - Sasso
170 - Labriola
285 - Camacho (toss up w/ Furman (Canon-Mac)

Legit shot
113 - Cam Enriquez
182 - Travis Stefanik

didn't put much thought in to it - but there's a starting point.

Small facts. In 1973, the last year of single-class PIAA championships, D3 had 16 of the 48 placewinners (a full 1/3). It also had 7 finalists of the 24 but only two champs. Lower Dauphin rolled out 3 straight guys in the finals (Mutek at 138, Stauffer at 145 and Neiswinder at 155, forgive me if I don't have their names 100% correct, but I'm going from memory) but they all lost. Larry Kepp lost to Jimmy Carr in Carr's, I believe, last high school season in PA after representing the USA in the 1972 Olympics. Eric Carr of Cumberland Valley won 133 and Don McCorkle of Hershey (and later Lehigh) won 185. My old brain forgets the 7th finalist from D3 that year. But it was a pretty impressive display of dominance for one district.

Oh, it came to me a few minutes later, Greg Duke of Manheim Township at 98. We were robbed of a sixth Duke/John Malles of Hempfield (D3) matchup of the season (dual meet, Christmas tournament and finals of sectionals, districts and regionals prior to states) when Malles was injured while holding a big lead in the semis and eventually lost in OT.

You have a great memory for details. You also brought back a few memories for me. I had a lot of friends at both Cumberland Valley and Lower Dauphin including George and Mark Stauffer. I remember going a party at the Stauffers in 1975 and the whole Lehigh team was there.

Do you remember Eric Mast from Mechanicsburg? He was in that same group, but I don't remember how he did in HS. In college he did great. He was the very first ever NCAA D3 champion!

nice work, matter7172...

I believe your missing D-3 finalist was Rick Peiffer from Upper Dauphin who lost to George O'Korn from Cannon-Mac at 167

**note to AgSurfer -- Eric Mast from Mechanicsburg actually finished 4th at 112 in the 1973 PIAA championships....talk about a state loaded with talent

**additional note -- some of this from recall, but some also from research ;)

Willie, no need to defend D11's status with Spyker. D11 will be the toughest in the country as soon as he reads Cael's email saying Sasso is back in play.

I remember Mast, he was in the semis that year. He did win a DIII title, was that the first year of DIII championships? I think he went to Elizabethtown? I looked it up, and 1974 was indeed the first year of DIII championships and Mast was the first champion at E-town. He came back to win again his senior year.

A AAA state champ from Chambersburg in 1974, Craig Helmuth, also won a DIII title at Gettysburg in 1975.

I think Peiffer was #8 in the finals, then. I forgot about him, which is sort of ironic because I almost wrestled him that year. We had a scrimmage against Upper Dauphin in November of 1972 that I had to miss because of a dental emergency. Back then, we had very little idea of who was "good" in our area so I had no idea who I was going to be wrestling. I beat our sectional champ and, I think, the district and regional runnerups that year, so it would have been fun to wrestle Peiffer. An elbow (uncalled) knocked me out at the end of an early round sectional match, I wound up getting reversed and put on my back before I came to and I lost the match by a point. No wrestlebacks then, so I was done. Crappy way to end my high school career.

Wrestlingstats.com has a full repository of Div.3 wrestling championship results. It is fun to look back and see names of guys I watched wrestle and competed against in high school and college.

Interesting stuff, matter; thanks

You don't think Big Ed is pushing for Little Ed to join him in Tempe? Really?

Also, maybe NoVa has a different reason, but I can think of two really good reasons he won't be coming to PSU: the current roster and the known commitments at his weight range.
Diceman's spreadsheet shows them looking at him for 174. Not sure how he is being blocked there...he's be a redshirt freshman Hall's senior year. Or even at 165, a redshirt freshman Joseph's senior year, with Manville two years ahead, if he stays at thay weight.

Thanks for the link. My memory isn't bad for someone over 60. ;) So I guess D3 had 8 of the 24 finalists in 1973 and 17 of the 48 placers. Quite a performance.

I really wish we had gotten to see that sixth meeting of the season between Duke and Malles at 98. That was some rivalry.
