Not sure why Penn State does not claim 1921 as a national championship, as I believe 3 of Oklahoma States 34, that they claim, were unofficial as well.

There is a banner in Rec Hall saying we were 1921 National Champs in wrestling.

All 34 were 1928, or after...
1928 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1929 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1930 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1931 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1933 Iowa State/ Oklahoma State Hugo Otopali/E.C. Gallagher
1934 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1935 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1937 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1938 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1939 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1940 Oklahoma State E.C. Gallagher
1941 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1942 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1946 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1948 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1949 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1954 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1955 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1956 Oklahoma State Art Griffith
1958 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1959 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1961 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1962 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1964 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1966 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1968 Oklahoma State Myron Roderick
1971 Oklahoma State Tommy Chesbro
1989 Oklahoma State Joe Seay
1990 Oklahoma State Joe Seay
1994 Oklahoma State John Smith
2003 Oklahoma State John Smith
2004 Oklahoma State John Smith
2005 Oklahoma State John Smith
2006 Oklahoma State John Smith
But weren't 3 of their earlier ones unofficial? I'm not sure why they were considered unofficial though.

Not arguing, this is information only...
The banner, I believe, says "1921 NCAA Wrestling Champions"...

Wrestling became an NCAA Sport in 1928.

I believe this is what NittanyLion84 is referring to re. Oklahoma State's titles ... "In 1928 and from 1931 to 1933, there was only an unofficial title. Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) won the 1928 and 1931 unofficial titles. Indiana University won the 1932 unofficial title, and in 1933, Iowa State and Oklahoma A&M were unofficial co-champions." Yet every year is listed as official everywhere else in NCAA Records, and OSU is given credit for the titles. Only in 1943-1945 (World War II) was there no National Champ. There is no reference whatsoever, anywhere that I could find, to NCAA Wrestling prior to 1928.

The Penn State story for 1921 shows up several places in print, with the following references;

"In 1921, Penn State was declared the National Dual Team champion after defeating Indiana University and Iowa State" (article by Mark Palmer, 2008)

"Penn State, National Intercollegiate Champions for the past 2 years", written in 1921 in the Indiana University Alumni Quarterly
...and...
An article in the Penn State Wrestling Club's "A Century of Penn State Wrestling" (2008), which, I believe also states PSU was the National Intercollegiate Champions.

So, there it is...make of it what you will.

Roar never took it that you were arguing. Thanks for all the great info on this topic.

In 1927, Dr. Raymond Clapp published the rules for collegiate wrestling, and the next year, the first NCAA Wrestling Team Championship took place on March 30 to March 31 on the campus of Iowa State College. 40 wrestlers from 16 colleges participated, and it was among the first national championships sponspored by the NCAA, the second national championship after outdoor track and field in 1921 (and the third postseason NCAA meet after both outdoor track and field and swimming in 1924).[8] Oklahoma State University won that first championship, which was an unofficial one, and later won the first official championship in 1929. Oklahoma State would win 27 of the first 45 Wrestling Team Championships in the Division I category, including seven straight between 1937 and 1946. In 1953, Penn State University became the first team outside of the Midwest to be awarded the national championship. One of the prominent champions during that period was Myron Roderick who won three straight individual championship as a wrestler at Oklahoma State (from 1954 to 1956. Later as a coach, Roderick would lead his teams to seven championships between 1958 and 1968.[

This thread deserves to be hi-jacked like this after mine was basically held hostage on The G with dudes talking 'bout arte deco and whatnot. Karma is real.

This entire "Everything Gophers" thread is hanging on by a slim 6 vote margin. I sure you can round up some of your fellow ne'er-do-wells and vote it out of existence.

p.s. the Arte Deco discussion was the best thing that was ever posted on your thread.

Lesnar notified of anti doping allegation June 28th? Say it isn't so! Surprised Big T Nelson and his Bacne never got tested. :D

Lou Banach lulz
Only had to go back 33 years for that one, I see. Besides, Iowa's coaching difficulties isn't even the discussion. It's the HR boards continued whining that Tony Nelson used steroids. I mean how else could anyone have ever beaten Blake Rasing or Bobby Telford? Anyone who has ever met or knows the Nelson family realize how absurd the allegations are. And I will acknowledge that while there are a few sane posters on HR who do belittle the Bacnegate crowd, the majority are complicit in their silence.

Of course Nelson didn't juice -- his lung and/or ankle would've healed much faster vs. Gwiazdowski. :D

Lesnar juicing would be the least surprising news since my taxes being due on April 15.

Shelton Benjamin is making a comeback to WWE Smackdown. That's exciting. Hope he finally gets a title reign that he deserves.

Spoke with Shelton at the Gopher golf fundraiser. Real nice fella, was excited to be back around. Most he ever weighed was 218 while competing. Won a Juco national championship in a sprinting event.

It looks like those who thought an exit strategy was being formed are right. The U doesn't seem to be cooperating. JRob wants his contract bought out.

I have been as openly-anti-JRob as they come... Most of which has been aimed at the wrestling and coaching aspects of him. This $&%* right here is about his character. I've never heard people say a bad thing about him as a human. I roll in circles that have wanted him to part ways as a coach, but still think he's a stand-up guy. This is a really cruddy situation, and I hope everyone involved learns from it: The wrestlers, J, the university, etc.

Along he same lines, people involved with the program love Eggum. I'm not sure I agree with it from a wrestling stand-point, but I also have heard that J has been more and more involved and taking over, as of late, so maybe this switch up will be beneficial for them. I'm just glad there's forward motion.

In 40 years, I think history will still reveal him as the best U of MN coach to date. And you are right about his character.

if there are no punishments. If there are no transfers. If there is only heartbreak. These kids and their families are indebted for life to J.

The guy is a soldier in life and thats a big GD sword he is falling on for all involved and that includes the Ath Dept.

I'll wait for the university report before I start praying to Saint J. Nothing I've read so far makes J anything other than self serving.

Trying to drag the university down instead of taking personal responsibly isn't exactly going to get you mother Theresa status, especially when you look at the time line of events and how it sure looks like he kept things quiet to keep those guys in the lineup. Essentially they were going to walk with writing an essay and getting their inventory destroyed if the facts didn't come out. Not sure how this can be viewed as something positive.

There will be no "university report". The last thing that the U of MN administration wants is for people to see their dirty fingerprints all over this mess. The lawyers stall tactics are simply a negotiating ploy to get the smallest buyout of J's contract.
