Could someone explain the pinz seeding. I am shocked by some of the miss seeds. How do these points accumulate? Just let Willie seed it. Give him a cold sixer and a dozen of garlic wings. Smalls are you in?

I think that's all for the recruits today. Desmond, Perry & Henckel have all moved on to the round of 32. I hope I didn't miss anyone.

Round of 32 Matches:
126 pounds - #3 Nate Desmond (PA) VS #30 Drew Hansen (MI)
138 pounds - #10 Dalton Perry (PA) VS #23 Elvis Solis (FL)
175 pounds - #2 William Henckel (PA) VS Hunter Snyder (PA)

Of note, 16U FS 157 lbs from Arkansas Gus Smith is the son of Pat Smith. Under the radar nationally, but he and Alex Reed (150 lbs) are very good and could certainly AA. Reed may be pretty undersized as he wrestled 138 during the HS season.
Size killed Reed. Got big brothered to 0-2 BBQ, deep on shots but couldn't finish because he's too small for 150. Gus has 2 ~30 sec TFs. He's looked great and you can tell he's from the Smith family. Low singles to leg laces!

It's ridiculous. PIN is Performance Index Number. Basically you get points for wins in USA wrestling events. So more USA wrestling events you wrestle and win, the more your PIN number goes up. Example, Ironman, Super 32, State folkstyle tournament, Powerade, none of that matters for your PIN.

Are we saying that folkstyle matches should affect freestyle seeding?

Would be more credible then using a small amount of freestyle matches.
Disagree. There may be a correlation between the two, but they are very different. If you want to be seeded at Fargo, wrestle significant FS events consistently.

I've maintained for a long time that the only thing freestyle results tell you in terms of predictive results in folkstyle is talent tier. Guys in roughly they same broad tier can have vastly different results in the styles depending on experience, technique, styles. Guys in different tiers - the better guy is always winning.

What screws everyone up is these results impact on the rankings. But again, I've long maintained that all of the rankers are rating the best overall wrestler combining styles. Very variable, even objectively. If rankers were to start HS and College kids in freestyle and folkstyle only separately, those would look very different except at the very, very top (where there is a separation in elite talent) and be more cut and dry.

would still be better to seed the tournament factoring in folk style to some degree. Not saying add it to the pin but the PIN doesn’t work when everyone doesn’t do the same tournaments to get the correct seed.

Should we seed the ncaa tournament based off of the southern scuffle and citadel open only and take nothing else into consideration?

Folk vs free translation isn’t the point anyone is trying to make but cmon. Folk kids do pretty well in freestyle but yes a few kids are better at free then folk and so on.

This isn't a good comparison because all are in the same style.

A better comparison would be: let's seed NCAAs baaed on Bill Farrell, U20/U23 Trials, and other USA Wrestling/UWW events. (Can't imagine how this would be received.)

In any case, nobody can just show up at Fargo. The qualification process includes competing at other USA Wrestling events -- even for the auto-qualifiers. The seeding system is obviously flawed but not completely meritless.

Before changing it, I'd ask how many kids are skipping USA Wrestling events for Folkstyle Nationals or NHSCAs (etc.) -- in which case, why should a USA Freestyle seeding system be changed to accommodate them? (Other than just hand it over to Willie ...)

Interesting result from last night (with a PSU connection)…

At 100 lbs in Cadets(16U), PA’s Chase Karenbauer beat NY’s Will Soto 6-3 in the Round of 32. Soto, wrestling for Puerto Rico, won gold in freestyle at U15 Pan Ams at 48kg and was an undefeated NY state champ at 105 this past season. Karenbauer won double gold at 44kg at U15 Pan Ams and is a rising 9th grader. (Chase also had two folk style wins over Keegan Bassett this past season). PSU connection: Karenbauer’s Bad Karma club coach is Mark Steen, Gary’s dad, and his high school coach will be former PSU wrestler Wes Phipps. Chase will be a freshman to watch.

Nate & other wrestlers have been wearing a Philadelphia Phillies jersey-styled singlet that's white with red vertical pinstripes & a big 'P' in the center of the chest. It's a great looking singlet.

I’m comparing doing that to using the PIN system. It’s useless. Forget the free vs folk.

Too much travel at that level between events to get an accurate PIN rating. Never gonna work.

I’ve been able to watch him compete in person several times. He’s really impressive. He has great motion and transitions. He’s a monster. He should be a buzz saw next season
