Flo’s lawsuit against Willie and Rokfin

Wrestling is a fairly small tight knit community and Flo’s lawsuits against one of the favorites to destroy his career, silence his voice and take his paycheck from him has cast Flo as the enemy. This reminds me in part of NASCAR in the late 90’s at the peak of their popularity made some changes and alienated a large faction of fans. Are the corporate stiffs at Flo completely tone deaf to how this would play out in public? If Willie is influential enough to pull business away from Flo why didn’t they do everything in their power to keep him rather than discard him to the unknown? Flo f&cked up big time. I am a subscriber chomping at the bit to cancel bc I don’t like what they are doing to this guy. I supported Flo in part for content and in part to promote the growth of wrestling. This horsesh!t of silencing and controlling one of the more well liked and intelligent voices in our sport by a bunch of corporate stiffs tells me 2 things:
1. Flo doesn’t give a crap about our sport, just trying to profit
2. Flo is run by non-wrestlers making money for other non-wrestlers

I’ll cling to my ideals on this and support those who support wrestling #1. Keep up the good work Willie. Flo and Karen and the rest of the circus can go pound sand.
Ramos getting on twitter to bash flo and claim they are in trouble now that they don't have a monopoly is a big eye opener. He's been very tight with the flo crew for a long time. They've alienated a huge segment of the wrestling world and their entire business depends on access. Unfortunate (and too common) case of a company letting private equity money and corporatization steer the business away from what made it successful in the first place.

Couple things on this.
1. Flo didn't expect this to be on YouTube for everyone to see live. You can call this a win for COVID-19.
2. Flo's target is essentially Rokfin and Willie made it possible to sue them. Flo wants to keep suing Rokfin until they are bankrupt. This is likely 6 or 7 figures worth of lawyer fees on both ends.

Re 1, that's true, but worth noting that anyone could've walked into court and reported on it, and it's likely some would have. It wouldn't be exactly the same experience but it wouldn't have been secret.

Flo just wants to hammer Rokfin. Not sure if something is there or not. Seems to me that Flo is more likely to be something that would be a channel on Rokfin then a competitor to what Rokfin does.
Willie seems to have violated his non compete to at least some degree but hoping he gets off or a slap on the wrist and allowed to immediately start working to the full extent.
This isn’t helping Flo’s image but not sure it will hurt them in the long run. I’d love to cancel with them but the live streaming and floarena is too valuable.
FRL also is not as good with Willie gone. Not even close. I just listen cuz it’s wrestling content. Pyles is arrogant and thinks he knows best on everything and everyone else is ignorant. Askren is OK but his schtick gets a little old but he knows a lot. Bratke is tolerable. It’s improved since NOMAD left , couldn’t stand that guy. He knew a lot but tried to act too smart and over explain his views. It is a little too much holding back cuz they need to protect business interests and not just talking wrestling but I can understand that.

Pretty sure Flo Arena is free. When they lost the BTN content, they lost my money. I am still pissed that they used that opportunity to switch from monthly to yearly subscriptions.

Yes it is free. Just on a roll with the 2 things I like. Ha

the PIAA live feeds are also worth it to me too.

Best comment so far in this trial! "if you think that, you don't know Cael!" says Martin in response to Karen's question. That was great!!
Thew best comment was that they doubled their subscriptions in September (4,600 new subscriptions)
That's $46,000/month PSU fans are currently paying.

Nerf, whattya think about switching your internetting practice here? Mess Boards are not nearly as real-time as the Tweeter, and a bunch of us who are later-than-right-now getting around to the mess boarding are finding a lot of your posted/shared tweets have been deleted.

Any chance the ole screenshot technique could be implemented more effectively in such cross-channel matters?

tia, if possible--jp

Hmm. @jtothemfp I’m actually not real keen on sharing screenshots of social media in general. I tend to use my moderate influence to encourage others to feel the same.

I have started doing it if I think it will soon be deleted (I call it the RBY clause), but as an internet consumer, I’d rather have a click through to vet the source, and confirm the lack of fakery than create a permanent record of someone’s second guessed opinion.

To clarify on this one, I don’t remember the exact syntax, but Willie was playfully suggesting that YouTube and ESPN were competitors to flo. i’m sure his lawyers convinced him to take it down.

That makes good sense, thanks.

I tend to agree with you on all that, but pivoted a bit when, like, the 4th click-through brought me to a deleted tweet, after 4-5 days away from bwi.

Another way to characterize my experience: if I didn't get here in time read the tweets when they were up, then...my loss ;)
It makes sense to maybe start doing both. I'll be taking more screenshots from here on out--but the extra steps for imgur hosting makes that kind of a pain too. Someone should start a service that does both for you--embeds the actual source, but takes a ss backup to display if it gets remove. THAT would be sweet.

I use a browser app called Nimbus, which lets you select a screenshot, where it opens in a new tab, from where you click once to 'store' it, from where you can right-click copy its location. It's superior to dealing with Imgur, b/c you're never saving the screenshot locally.

I think this is a totally wrong read. I don't think it's at all an accurate gauge of where Flo is at and is instead posturing by a college coach who likes to pop off on twitter quite a bit. It's actually kind of dumb that he'd say it publicly in the first place. Like Flo or not, they can help any program at any level, just like Track, Intermat, etc and local media can. To what degree Flo (and other media) can help is different for every team, but it is inarguable they can.

Beyond that, it's smart to have as many friends and as few enemies as possible. Even if he 100% believes what he said, it's kind of moronic to say it in a public forum. I think he'd be much better off taking his concerns to Flo privately where they'd probably be more open to listening to whatever he or any other coach for that matter has to say. If he's right, then the largest media outlet for wrestling over the past decade and a half is going down the tubes, which is pretty bad for the sport. And if he's wrong he may have just alienated a company that in the past two months has paid not only him but one of his RTC athletes to be on their cards. Flo has plenty it can and should work on but a coach publicly calling them out like that is pretty shortsighted in my opinion.

I think it has to do with text messages from Ramos,Cael and Jaggers that have been shown in court.Thats gonna hurt Flo access to programs.Coaches around the country weren't aware texts to Flo employees could show up in court. With that said many coaches won't be texting Flo employees anytime soon. And Flo has RTC duals on Dec 4 the same day as the UNC event on FiteTv

Right, and it's not that Flo can say, "well, we had no choice, we had to turn this stuff over," because Flo brought the suit.

Exactly. Not a good choice by them at all.The higher ups at Flo obviously decided to go all out on the case.Doubt they fully understood the consequences it would've in the wrestling community. Its about trust and building relationships and now Flo has lost that

So in your opinion there will be no behind the scenes or on campus access given to Flo over the next few weeks by any of the teams involved in the RTC Cup or 8-man bracket? The latter features one of Ramos' RTC athletes in JO. I'm sure trust has been affected on some level but I'm not sure I buy that they've lost it entirely.

Is that you, CP? If the largest media outlet for wrestling is not vested in the same broad goals of the wrestling world and is instead focused on profit and stomping out competition then it’s time for us to have a new go-to media outlet.

I just don't think it's smart for any coach to go after an outlet publicly, whether it's Tony on Flo, Tom Ryan on Track, John Smith on Open Mat or any other combination of coaches and media you can think of.

Yes they will do that of course they've the contract. This event is happening because TMWC not Flo.Not sure how many coaches you know in the sport but I can tell you that this will for sure hurt Flo access to coaches in the future

Somewhat ironic (or moronic) that an organization that is claiming adverse impact to their business by others seems to have done more damage to themselves by alienating those who can provide access.

It's not the wrong read. It's an observation. Me observing something happening does not equal me endorsing one side or the other. The fact is that they've alienated several major programs at multiple levels from high school to RTCs. PSU is famously one of them, so not sure why you're being obstinate about it.

Would I get on Flo's bad side? No (unless you're as big as PSU or Iowa where it doesn't really matter because they still have to cover you). That doesn't mean that there aren't coaches out there that are going to avoid Flo as much as possible.

In the end, Flo is going to be fine because 90% of their business is event streaming. People don't subscribe for the articles. But this is definitely going to make things more difficult for their content team.

It was never a monthly sub. It was always a bait and switch. Flo is a shit company who should have been fined for this. They always advertised a monthly price but when you tried to check out they tried to bill you a whole year at once. Flo sucks, always has, and will likely never be a good company.

Was gonna cancel mine too, but now UWW is in bed with Flo, only way to watch any Worlds, correct?

I am not sure where else if any you can watch worlds. I'm not giving a Flo a dime either way so it doesn't matter to me.
In the past when it was hosted on Track, you've been able to use a VPN to watch the free stream UWW hosts for other countries. Not sure that will still work though.
