Harbaugh suspended for rest of regular season

Not exactly.

At least according to Pete Thamel:

Sources: The Big Ten is expected discipline Michigan for the in the in-person scouting and ongoing sign stealing investigation and will prohibit Jim Harbaugh from being on the sideline until the conclusion of the regular season. He will be allowed to coach during the week.

This would be the most lame-ass "suspension" in the history of suspensions. In fact, from the above wording, it appears he might even be able to coach games from the press box...

He's also apparently allowed to coach in the B1G championship game and the playoff if they get there

Wrong. Not allowed at the venue.

Hah, wow..amazing. Never thought Petitti would do it. I like setting lower expectations then being pleasantly surprised. Nice job Tony.

I truly wonder where he'll be watching the game from tomorrow...assume he's with the team until they board their busses, and he meets them at the airport after the game. Guess maybe try to secure a hotel room for another night.

Actually not a good sign for PSU. According to the betting gurus, when teams lose a star player or coach the trend is they step up for one game. It actually can give them an emotional boost.

This is stupid and not even a real penalty. Actual penalties have a noticeably bad impact on those penalized - this doesn't harm Harbaugh at all nor have any competitive disadvantage to UM. It's stupid and the conference would have been better doing nothing than having promoting something so spineless.

Championship ineligibility or revenue withholding would have been real penalties.

This is the best of everything for Michigan. Jimbo gets to play the martyr. The team gets to play the us-against-the-world card. And the sanctions are toothless and meaningless.

What sanctions did you expect from the Big Ten without an investigation?

NCAA steps in before the ccg if Michigan wins out or clinches. The pdf note reads much more so like the NCAA knows what they have and is going to do something. It's wrote in there. We'll see what happens. Perhaps nothing. Perhaps something. Time will tell.

Should Penn State do this? They get to steal signs for a couple of big games, and they only lose Franklin on the sideline for a few games, which I love James, but is probably the weakest part of his portfolio?

No we'd get shut down as a follow up punishment for Sandusky.

His brother John to coach U of M on Saturday. John will be talking to Jim via cell phone and ESP.

On the other hand, this whole drama worked to take some pressure off our coach and team over the last week.

Otherwise, one of the leading storylines every day would have been how Franklin hadn't delivered against the Big-2, how critical this game would be for him to finally break through, yada yada yada.

Except nobody was talking about that because everyone was obsessed with Michigan's cheating and Harbaugh's possible fate.

That's the point. The Big Ten shouldn't have done anything as opposed to not doing anything but claiming to with this.
I don't necessarily agree, in that i sort of think about what's going on now as akin to an injunction designed to minimize imminent potential harm, rather than for the ultimate punishment (which Big may sort of leave to the ncaa). Here, interim relief is warranted inasmuch as the record - or at least what's out there in the public domain - suggests there is info of potential benefit that the staff has now, for games being played now. maybe i'm wrong to think about it that way but that's the way i think about it.

Question for legal experts, can he file an appeal, requesting a hearing and still be allowed to coach until his appeal is heard?

There's no wrong way to think about it.
To me, this isn't real action and I think Michigan will still fight it. Even I thought he'd at least be suspended but this isn't even a suspension.
