Hearing Nick S. is making good Progress. That is a great sign for him and PSU. Others better look

Apparently, all we know is that you cannot forfeit out of the tournament. I'll take a stab in the dark and say that Cael knows the rule.

Maybe it's not even worth discussing, but since I haven't seen it, who would go if Nick can't compete this weekend.
Carp, Law, someone else?

My guess is nobody. Yanovich has been injured and the others are undersized true freshmen. If Schnupp was begging to go, I guess I'd let him.

Edit: forgot about Higgins and Stossel. I think it would be Higgins.

Don't know that it means much either way, but in today's Penn State Wrestling notes, Suriano is listed as the 125 pounder in the lineup that Penn State will be sending to B1Gs. Would think that if there was a chance we'd be sending someone besides Nick, there'd be an "OR" at 125. (Also note that it's Carpenter at 133 and not Law).

Edit: Of course, by this point the staff has surely had to indicate to the Big10 who we are sending for seeding purposes. So I think we can probably rule out the possibility that it's anyone other than Nick Suriano at 125 in Indianapolis for Penn State (though this still says nothing either way about how close to 100% he will be).

Instead of a forfeit, couldn't a wrestler just let his opponent pin him? Counts as a full match result.
That is an out-of-the-box thought and good of you to suggest it. However Cael will have to be a better politician than coach to convince a very competitive and prideful wrestler to give up a chance at victory let alone a pin. He is going to have to convince Nick that allowing himself to be pinned is best for him long term. I doubt that Cael will even ask Nick to be pinned. Cael understands that the physiological negative impact on a wrestler, who is so important to Penn States long term goals, is more important than short term results - especially since the short term goals are not guaranteed given the severity of the injury.

Anyone want to make an educated guess at what NCAA seed Suriano would earn if he did not receive a bye, won his first round match vs a below average opponent and defaulted the remainder of the Big Tens ?

Could he still earn a 3 seed at NCAAs ?

The chances of Nick allowing somebody to pin him is less than zero. Neither Nick nor Cael would consider this. There is not a single D1 wrestler or coach that would, either. We're talking about people who live to compete and this would go against every fiber of competition in them.

Yes, and he would be the 3 seed. He might even be the 2 seed.

He could, but remember who's hands this is in. It's an unbiased (??) group that represents all of college wrestling, and they'll discuss this at length IF it is what happens. I'm hopeful for more than one bout...we'll see.

Terrible post.

I'm not sure why it is so terrible to ask a question. I wasnt suggesting Nick do it. People were discussing if a wrestler can forfeit and still advance to nationals. If they can't, I wondered if getting pinned would be a work around. Clearly nobody would want that, but it might be an option of last resort.

It's skirting the rules, gaming the system, whatever you want to call it, and has a certain unethical twist to it. The backlash would be highly emotional, regardless of the program that did it...but more so if it was PSU. It's just not in the DNA of our coaching staff, so there's that.

I applaud you for asking the question, though it ain't happening...maybe that's where diggerpup was coming from.

I don't know any wrestler that would purposely get pinned no matter what the circumstance.

Not gonna lie.. I thought the same thing about just possibly taking a pin to protect the ankle but then thought about it and knew Cael would be against it and never do it and so to would Nick.. I get the thought though.. as little activity on the ankle..

...BigFreddy said that we can rule out anybody other than Nick Suriano representing Penn State at 125# this week in Indianapolis...
...In fact NOBODY is representing us there - since the BIG10s are in Bloomington... :)

Ha, started typing "Indiana" and just didn't stop soon enough....

Cael said Nick is improving, but that "game day decision" comment is concerning.

He did, however, verify that all Nick needs to do is start one match.

I think there's still a chance he can go, but there is no doubt now that IF he goes, he'll default out of the first match.

Bo says he has no doubt that Nick will do the best he can to the best of his ability. I think he'll try to go.

Exactly what I said he would do and people were getting on me lol everyone still want to take that bet? Lol

10 more days to heal up after Saturday. A lot of progress can happen in that time frame. There really is no benefit from him wrestling multiple matches if the ankle is anything less than 100%. Let's hope he can get the 3 seed at NCAAs and can be as close to 100% as possible.

I take it to mean the game day decision is how far to let him wrestle.. not whether he will wrestle or not wrestle... just my take.. before he said game day decision, he commented on him being an animal or something to that effect and that he is recovering quickly..

Still dumb post. Maybe he can caution his way out. Better yet, five stall calls will do it.(tic)

So its ok to suggest a guy caution his way out? Isn't that just another way to game the system like getting pinned? What if he gets injured while backing up? I guess you just made a dumb post then.

He WILL Wrestle and he will do his best, IF he gets injured he has months to heal, he can even Redshirt next season in a worst case scenario, Look for him to Wrestle at Big 10(14) and NCAA as the #2 seed or even #1(his entire work this season is #2 NOT 3, no seeding committee will seed him any worse than #2 at NCAA) if he beats Gillman Sunday.

This is a prediction, I have NO inside knowledge, just seems common sense.

Stating the obvious but this is why pulling MH shirt was a good decision (hindsight). It gives us some insurance points. If NS can not go and MH shirt was still on it would be hard to see making up the points necessary.
