Listening to post game CJF said they were practicing hook & ladder for a few weeks, but Herbie said something to the effect, during a game, OSU?, that he saw PSU practicing it, what the?
CJF also said they had to mellow the play, ( put it on ice) for a couple weeks, makes me wonder if it could have been used against OSU or MSU. Thanks Herb.

Probably a reason not to let media in to practice, JoePa style. If they are going to spill the beans, just say due to Herbstreit, we don't do media in full practice any longer. It won't stop everybody (including us) from treating him as a deity on campus on weekends, but it serves a purpose on game day.

He most definitely said that during the Michigan game. It made my ears perk up because it was just another play to get Barkley into space. But that's also pretty dirty pool out of Herbie to reveal that. These guys are let into practices and have production meetings with coaches and key players leading into the game and that's for information to help with the broadcast as well as storylines. It is NOT to give away plays that are being run in practice. Herbie could have said something along the lines of 'they've been working on a number of other wrinkles in this offense' to supplement what we were seeing with Barkley taking the direct snaps but that is a giant screwup for him to reveal an actual play. I'm surprised it didn't get brought up sooner.

Does it really matter. If the play is in motion will somebody say holy heck I remember... in that split second they will not and to be in the right position to do something about it? No way. I wish they did it against either team in the 4 th when we needed something in both games.

anyone know at what point of Michigan game herbie said this ? id like to listen to it as i cant believe he'd be that unprofessional

that is a cardinal sin for a broacaster

How would OSU even know what Herbie says? The OSU coaches dont watch the ABC broadcast of the game, they watch the game film, that does not have audio. I dont like him saying it either, but him saying it, shouldnt have prevented PSU from running the play. Or better yet, faking the play and running something else.

They did have a bye and I’m sure players were watching. Still should have used it if they could have used it depending on situation

Why would we run it if the media was there

because there is implicit rule about not sharing what they hear in the PC or practice unless the play is run during the game they are calling. Steve and Jack mentioned it on the radio and I've heard other announcers saying they have "seen" things in practice but never commented on it.

I know that you want to bust on the staff every chance you get but this isn't one of those times.

I watched every second of the tOSU game and I did not hear Herbie say anything about a specific play that they were practicing. If this happened, in my opinion, it would be grounds for immediate termination and a lifetime ban against working as a CFB analyst.

It was definitely said during the broadcast. Can't remember if It was Fowler or Herbie. As to when it was said, I might be reaching but kind of sure we were driving towards the south end zone and we were fairly deep in Michigan territory. So if I'm correct that would make it either the 2nd or 3rd quarter. Sorry I can't narrow it down more than that for you.

Not the OSU game, the Michigan game. It was definitely said. No question. Others have said Herbie but I can't remember if It was Fowler or Herbie but it was definitely said.

FWIW, I think you’re both right.
But practicing a hook and ladder is like practicing a fake punt, reverse or onside kick. Every team practices them at some point. Just a fun and risky trick play all coaches and players have seen or practiced.

Would have been different if herbie mentioned seeing harbaugh’s giant I start formation or Bielima’s clock-killing kickoff stunt v Joe years ago. But even in that case, there was talk about that flaw in the clock start rule.

Herbie did this in our game too, albeit he was doing it for our benefit (not that anyone on the staff could hear him). During OSU's first (IIRC) two point conversion try Herbie mentioned OSU practicing a certain play and boom, they ran it right after he said it. Not necessarily the same thing, but maybe he should shaddup from time to time....

Look at it this way, imagine an announcer bringing up the fact that Boise St. runs a real cool Statue of Liberty play, before the Oklahoma game.

They said that they were working on additional plays but they never said a specific play.. as I said before, that would be grounds for dismissal and lifetime ban. I saw every minute of the Michigan game as well, and I don't recall anyone speaking about the hook and lateral (its not ladder, by the way).

Well, you'e simply not rememering it because they most surely said about a hook and lateral to Barkley that they've been working on.

that wasn't herbie, it was Klatt (different network). It was on the end around. Difference is that was during the game and the coaches wouldn't have known about it...this was in advance of the OSU game.

Just watched my recording of the PSU - tOSU BTN 60 minute show last night. Yes, the announcers called the exact play on the first two pt conversion attempt, but it wasn’t Herbie. I’m pretty sure that game was televised on Fox.

Thanks - thought it was Herbie.

Ok - dude did sound a lot like Herbie didn’t he?

I don't remember the game but it was a couple weeks ago on Thursday night. Someone was going for a two point conversion. The announcer said we watched them practice this earlier this week. Then he called the play. Seconds later than ran exactly what he said they would. I commented to my wife how unprofessional it was. I wish I could remember the exact game, but my memory sucks

I saw that game, but can't recall which game it was. I think that case came very close to crossing the line, but really only commented on the play they were running at that vert minute. That is different than saying that the team practiced a fake punt all week, well before the fake punt was run. I still don't recall anyone giving away a specific play during the Michigan game.
