I'm still surprised McKenna gave up his opportunity to get his degree from Stanford.
I think he did get his degree from Stanford. Even if he didn’t it doesn’t really matter, his father is loaded. He’s the head guy at Hunter Roberts Construction Goup. I’m sure Joey has a pretty good gig waiting for him when he’s done completing

It's useful to remember that Nolf:

Has four losses, not three like Taylor, but one was due to sloppy officiating that allowed him to be injured.
Has ten more pins than Taylor (60-50)
Has three NC's, not 2.
Was never himself, pinned.

Had he won a 4th NC, there'd be no question he'd have been the best Lion. Similar can be said for Nickal.

In a hypothetical draft of all-timers:

In no order, I'm picking Nolf, Nickal and Boone before Taylor. If Carter gets No. 5, he's the fourth before Taylor.

It would be a toss-up between Taylor and Zain.
Y'all sleeping on David Taylor AND Zain? Cray.

SmDh

For real though, it's an interesting case.

If you go by career bonus rate, this is really your top 5 in the Cael era

1) Taylor (91)
2) Nolf (86)
3) Nickal (77)
4) Ruth (76)
5) Zain (75)

If you go by bonus rate in their last 3 years, because let's remember Zain took an unbelievable leap offensively after his redshirt...

1) Nolf (96)
2 Taylor (94)
3) Zain (87)
4) Ruth (82)
5) Nickal (80....but Bo had the best pinning percentage)

None of these guys had any truly bad losses. For example, probably the worst loss by any was when Ruth lost to Mike Letts but Letts was a multi AA.

Me personally, I'm taking Zain primarily because I think he's what Iowa wishes they were.

Why would it? Cael and staff know what they are doing… name me a time when a guy left and came back to beat the Nits??? Suriano, sure but that was a mess to begin with. Cael plays chess. This was probably in the works and the Nits were shopping.
Brushing off the Suriano example like it's no big deal is ridiculous. PSU went on a 9 year drought after he left without an All American until Lilledahl this year. That's indisputably one of Cael's rare mistakes. You're losing credibility if you refuse to acknowledge that.

I love Cael as much as everyone else, and he's been right 99% of the time, but he still makes mistakes once in a blue moon. He's human.

Zain for me too,the only one on this list to go as a TF.and of course that when his only losses occured. I firmly believe had he shirted first he would have went undefeated.

What was the mistake?

Meh. Given Suriano's platinum U-Haul membership, and the snit he threw when Tomasello dared to train at the RTC for a whole week when invited ... he probably wasn't staying at PSU for 4 years.

As far as the drought goes: Cruiseliner Nick was HS 2016. After that:
- 2017: PSU was runner-up for Spencer. Got an official from Fix (wrestles 57 kg freestyle) in 2017. Visited Brandon Courtney.
- 2018: Landed Teasdale but he imploded. Landed Teske but he left. Recruited Glory and McKee.
- 2019: Finalist for McHenry. Runner-up for Byrd (HS 125) when he decommitted from Maryland.
- 2020: Landed Robert Howard but career derailed by injuries.
- 2021: Finalist for FIgs when he decommitted from ASU. Finalist for Poulin. Landed Steen.
- 2023: Finalist for McGowan. Landed Davis.
- 2024: Landed Lilledahl.

Plus the imports, Kuhn and Hildebrandt ...

The drought wasn't for lack of trying, and was merely lengthened by Suriano leaving -- if he had stayed, and remained 125 for his career, then our drought starts with Howard's shoulder injuries.

I lost zero sleep over Suriano.

You may have seen a drought at 1 weight class . . . I saw the team continue its dynasty and go on to smash records.

Right. The idea that Suriano was going to be Penn State's 125 for four years ignores the reality that he was never going to be anyone's four-year starter, and pretending that that would've been the case if Cael had only done x or y is delusional.

He wasn't even willing to stay at Arizona State for his last year of competition when already living and training there.

I blame the parents.

Oooh, what's the goss on Fellers & non grata?
I forget the details. Quick search yielded bupkis. Maybe just my impression from various podcast appearances, and later conspicuous absence.

For some reason I think it has to so with another donor's influence and his repeated harping on Brands not evolving their mindset and training approach.

Or maybe I imagined it all.

I believe it had to do with Chittum leaving Iowa and going to ISU.

How did that Chittum move affect Fellers and how his status change from persona grata to non, vis a vis the Iowa program?
Public repeated criticism of the decision to bring in the Ferraris, I would suppose. Coming to the realization of irreconcilable differences of value systems between himself and those who decided to bring in the Ferraris.

Chittum's public reason was Anthony Ferrari's arrival, given an alleged knife assault in HS.

Perfect, thank you. Have another lunch on me homie!
