Horrendous officiating to end Wisky game

Just horrendous officiating at end of Wisconsin- NW game. Wisky loses. Unreal.

I was watching tOSU v Sparty and flipped over - and Wisky had just tied the game at 13-13 with an extra point to come. it looked like a review that was about to put the ball inside the 1 yd line with a first down. either way, it looked like a sure win for Wisky with 28 sec to go.

how in the world did Wisky lose it, and how did the refs impact the game. NW is a smoke an mirrors team.

I hate that "maintain control through the catch" rule. He took two steps with complete control before he hit the ground and the impact of the ground causes the ball to move. The ball never touched the ground.

How is that different than the ground can't cause a fumble?

yes, nobody understands the way this rule is interpreted. I guess the play I saw with 28 seconds must have not been called a TD - and they must have put the ball down around the 1 yd line. I just saw a reply of the pass that was called incomplete. WoW!!

yes I do not know how you interpret these plays in the end zone anymore. absolutely stupid.

I'm sure most of you were watching the Sparty-Buckeye game but did any of you see the Wisconsin punt return that was called back? The returner waved off players from the short punt by waving both arms downward. He then fielded the ball and broke 3 or 4 attempted tackles before going all the way for an apparent TD. The ruling by the referees was that he made an invalid fair catch signal so they put the ball back to where he fielded it (or back further due to a penalty for the invalid fair catch signal, I can't recall). What confused me was that, to me anyway, fair catch signals are either valid or invalid - they are either made properly or they are not fair catch signals at all. So, if the player made what was considered to be a fair catch signal, then NW should be penalized for hitting him. If he didn't make a valid fair catch signal, then why can't he return it. Because anything that isn't a valid fair catch signal is an invalid one, right. Can someone please explain this call? There was no intent to deceive - the kid was waving his own teammates away - and the NW defenders obviously didn't think that he signalled a fair catch. One reason that I ask is that I've seen that downward armwaving motion many times but, based on this ruling, it now is considered equivalent to making a fair catch signal. Anybody know?

"Everyone's used to the over-the-head fair-catch signal," UW coach Paul Chryst said. "And now I understood what they were calling.

"When the ball bounces short and you try to warn everyone to get away from the ball. Any signal at all, the returner can't advance it."

The official call was that Erickson used an illegal fair-catch signal, and UW got the ball at its 22.

have you seen the clips of the Wisconsin fans pelting the refs with snow balls after the game? or pelting their own cheerleaders during the game?

wacky game n Wisky, but yeah the refs screwed the pooch on those calls.

Naaah. It's the big ten. They will ignore it or release a statement saying the refs made all the calls correctly like they did after the MSU Nebraska game changing bad call (that now hangs heavily over MSU's neck in the playoff discussion after beating OSU yesterday). ;)

Yeah, this is just one more thing to add to the list of infractions that I don't understand (poorly defined, unevenly enforced): holding, PI, blocking below the waist
