It seems to me that he had a lot more success at this weight. Could a move down ever happen?

Why would it? Not to mention that by the rules he would not be able to wrestle 133 until the Maryland dual at the earliest meaning he would have zero chance of qualifying the BIG for an NCAA spot making his chances of even making the NCAAs that much tougher. Plus Cortez was looking good prior to his injury.

Do we even know what his minimum allowed weight to compete is this season or if he certified at 133? I wouldn't be surprised if he's not allowed to compete at 133, even if he could physically make the cut.

Thanks for the info. I am excited to hear about and learn new things about PSU wrestling. Gonna post one more question:

I don't think JG's problems on the mat have *anything* to do with the weight class at which he is wrestling.
Jimmy has to start believing he is the best and get mean and nasty on the mat...His time is running out !!!!

He closed the gap a bit on Ashnault tonight, with a good solid moral victory. So, some light at the end of the tunnel possible?

I have no idea about the injury situation at 133, but the only way this could become possible is if that situation is worse than we thought. Still, if it happens it needs to happen the match after Iowa, I believe.

If he weighs in at 141.0 lbs for Iowa, then he can make 133 by 2/15 as required for NCAAs -- if he is nearly dead-perfect on all of his subsequent weigh-ins, because he'll have 4 ounces of margin.

That ship hasn't quite sailed yet, but it's fully loaded, away from the dock, sails raised, and just waiting for a breeze.

Yeah, I don't think it's going to happen either. Was simply trying to figure out if it was even possible at this point. Might as well chalk that one up to "not going to happen".

Dunno but coming back to Cory freaking Clark isn't exactly "optimal", lmao. I think we might not see him until February.
Well, yeah, but is that Cory Freaking Clark yet, or just Cory? Good enough to put Micic to sleep last week, but Brock will push him harder this weekend.

My favorite moment was nick nevils perfecting some of Zain'S go to moves. You can tell he works hard at practice.

No kidding. Beyond the physiology of it, who really thinks 133 is a less competitive weight class?

Well Gulibon AA"d two years ago at 133, and IMHO he would no doubt AA this year at 133. I could care less who is at 133 this year, Gulibon would be right up there with any of them. Him and Clark were very close back then, who is number one as of now. It is quite obvious 141 is not his optimal weight class, he is just too small. Regardless what I think, I agree he is not dropping down and he is staying at 141. I will continue to root for him regardless.

I just have to disagree with that assumption. The path to AA isn't easier at 133 than it is at 141. Especially if you are a malnourished 133.

133 is the tougher weigh IMO...I think it has the most parity and is the toughest in college wrestling

Clark is 4-0 in limited action this year...all decisions. Some are remembering the pre-injury Clark. He may be 100% by Nationals, but not now. It will be a good test for Cortez if he goes.

I still think Micic got robbed in that match

So most think he is a small 141 pounder. So why do you think he would "malnourished" at 133? My opinion is 133 would be his optimal weight, but again that is just seeing with my eye how he has gotten horsed around at 141. Only Jimmy or the coaches would know what his best weight truly is.

My gosh I can only imagine what you thought of Chance at 157 for Okie state.

Duh. It does not matter. Do you not remember Pyles had Jimmy at number one at 141 before? Imagine if Gulibon went to 133? Pyles would have Jimmy already sitting in the finals. The guy who "wins" NCAA's would then have to beat Jimmy to get crowned the NCAA 133 pound Super Champion.

This is Jimmy's 2nd year at 141. In order to believe he is not a full-blown 141, one must also believe that Penn State's strength and conditioning coach has not done his job since March 2015. Really. College athletes gaining 15+ lb in one year is hardly newsworthy, yet Jimmy didn't gain 8 lb in one offseason and then retain it the next?

This is the problem with the "small" and "big" concept. With very rare exceptions -- Mouse at 197, or Galasso going up 2 weights today -- it's meaningless. It's 100% subjective; put 10 wrestling fans in a room, and you'll get at least a dozen different opinions about who's "small" or "big" Even if it were accurate, it would have no correlation to athletic attributes or abilities or skills, and would probably only correlate to who's cutting the most -- which isn't always a positive.

Jimmy is not a "small 141." He is a 141.

Gulibon wrestled better against Ashnault (was able to escape and able to ride), but still didn't come close to getting a TD. It was a good effort, but there is still a pretty decent gap between Gulibon and any of the top guys in the weight class IMO.

Yeah. I disagree here. I think it's mostly on the mat ...

Agree. At this point (halfway into his senior season), I think Gulibon's limitations are pretty obvious. His career collegiate record is now something like 65-41, and 7-6 so far this season. At this point, he is what he is.

On a more positive note, I like the matchup with Carton. Short and stocky, not long and lean. I think JG can win that one, maybe even by a couple takedown margin.

Couldn't agree more. All of that said Ken Theobold is still the largest 149lb human I have ever seen. They pin all the same according to Zain though.

Oh, sure, blame it on Michael Schroeder...

I totally agree: Theobold is the biggest 149 pounder I have EVER seen, the guy is freaking enormous. Of course Zain just hammered him like everyone else, but Theobold is giant.

I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing on my screen. Theobold is probably in the .1% of people who could look like that and make 149.
