Limegrover out.

Don’t quite know what to make of this. I always liked the guy. There are probably a number of things going on that are not public knowledge. Wish him well and hope things go well for his family.

My sense is more Limegrover wanted the OC position, wasn't happy that he wasn't even chosen to call the offense in the bowl. As such, he felt he was at the very least third man down the OC totem pole. Next OL coach up!
My sense is he underperformed at his job and JF thinks he has someone better to reach the next level. Simple

I’m sure Franklin already has a plan in place.. must go through the formality of posting for the open position etc.

Limegrover is also over 50 ( yes?) so there are HR issues to deal with etc. but I can’t help to think that James already has his guy and plan mapped out..

Anyone who manages a staff does the same thing of course when announcing a firing or not renewing someone’s contract...you make sure you have “ who” you want all lined up before any personal changes unless of course it’s perhaps unexpected or do to “ cause”...
Not much of an HR issue. Limegrover was under contract. His contract expired and he was not re-uped.

Good to know that CJF will make any changes necessary to improve this team. I loved Joe, but it was a different world when he coached.
Joe had mostly great and loyal assistants and he won 409 games. Are you suggesting Joe did not have a formula to win?

CJF always has a book on coaches he would consider hiring so the replacement announcement should not be too long in coming.

I'm hoping the first words out of the new OL coach's mouth are "it's an open competition for playing time". Either Fries needs "coached up" or we need a new RT. Hope we don't have to endure another season of speed rushers beating him play after play and trashing Clifford.....

Screen passes to Fries side of the field should work like a charm. He’s got the fake block of that play down pat!

Terry Smith is not Defensive Secondary. He is Corners. And to answer your question..."which positional group was worse....". I'd say Safeties were worse than the CBs. Let's just say that there are many times that it looks as if a CB is beaten, but it is deceptive because the CB is expecting help over the top from the Safety.

“Expecting help” or “hoping for help”.....hard to say, probably some of both.

And Joe spent his last 15-20 years trying to persuade Penn State fans that they should be happy with 9 wins and the Outback Bowl. Franklin is more ambitious than that. He wants to compete for championships and he seems to have the backing of PSU.

I don't think that Limegrover's departure should be necessarily read to mean he wasn't a good enough coach. It was a domino that fell after the Ciarrocca hiring and it probably means Limegrover's system or philosophy maybe isn't a fit with what Ciarrocca wants to do.

On the other hand the OL did struggle in pass protection mightily even though it's a veteran group and some highly recruited athletes.

but his system was a fit for JoeMo and RR??

I don't envy the OLine coach in this offense's scheme. If the QB went under center every once in a while, it would be an easier job.
Well, we got a new OC, so perhaps things will change in regard to the scheme. KC could implement going under center and shotgun/pistol. I might be wrong, but didn't Minny run both this year? And I can't imagine KC coming over if he isn't allowed to implement his entire offense.
And we may see something completely revolutionary and have 2 RBs or RB/H Back sets.

ML out Harry Hiestand out? Coincedence? IDK but the pros all gush over Harry, besides if you look at his last name he has to have PA connections!!!

Chicago Bears: The Bears are letting go offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich and offensive line coach Harry Hiestand as well as special teams assistant Brock Olivo and tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride the team has announced.

Wow, it’s like Christmas has not ended! This is excellent. It was tough watching the pocket collapse the entire year or Fries getting repeatedly beaten in various games.
Agreed, a couple days ago I said I didn't think JF was the guy to get us to elite. My opinion is changing with decisions like this. This OL showed no positive development the last four years based on the guys we recruited and years in the Program.

Actually (after watching the Bowl game replay several times) the CB young guns were a distinct improvement the second half.
I had that impression, but didn't spend time with the replay. Good to hear.

Of #2,7, 8, 9, and 19 -- who get the most playing time next year in your opinion?

this always looked like what was happening in a game to me...ZigZag....

I think this video points out the problem we've been seeing all year. They run these drills at WALKING SPEED. Unfortunately, some of our OL were still at WALKING SPEED in the game. Same thing for tackling. Need to go full speed to learn how to tackle.

Didn't they implement rules limiting the amount of live hitting in practice?

I also think there is a mentality to make the highlight reel play and damn the fundamentals. Therefore you have missed tackles that should have been relatively easy for most to make.

Who needs a link when you can post opinionated facts incessantly on the interwebs?

By the way, my opinionated facts can beat up your opinionated facts.
Do you think CJF was happy with the offense? Why did he fire his OL coach and go out and pay double for a new OC?

I would think you are right but I am still surprised. Anyone doubt CJF is serious about being elite

your sense is about as far from reality as possible. Like, couldn't be more incorrect.

One can assume that, but Franklin has said nothing. There are many factors. One is game performance. Others are recruiting, personnel utilization and development, philosophy, and personality.

He let an OC walk making half of the new hire and just fired his OL coach(also fired the WR coach last year)...clearly the 67th overall offense isn’t sitting well.
In other words, it’s your opinion...should have just said that. The OC left for a head coaching job....money isn’t always the only factor.

Assuming Bowen is not the new OL coach, do we still like Mike Munchak?

Denver went 7-9, he’s 59, and PA is home. Then again I have no idea what top tier college OL coach pay is versus the NFL so I don’t know if PSU could be competitive.

I’ve always thought he’s done a heck of a good job with OLs but maybe I’m not fully tuned in.
Munchak took the Denver job to be closer to his grandkids who live in that area of the country ... so that’s home now

He had to replace the OC that got a head coaching job...that was not his choice. He did get rid of the OL coach, but that was after four years....so he wasn’t all that unhappy with him.

A link to anything that states that CJF was unhappy with his OC....anything.
Link to what? Coaches don’t usually advertise their disappointment with assistants. They are here today and gone tomorrow with platitudes of thanks from their former bosses. The speculation and intrigue is added by posters on message boards such as us.

they do in the NFL, I am not aware of any in college

Exactly...which is why I called out someone who posted that CJF clearly wasn’t happy with the offense. That’s nothing more than the poster’s opinion and should have been posted as such. CJF clearly wasn’t happy with the overall job Limegrover was doing....beyond that no one can say what CJF thinks about his offense or defense.

btw 5 pm today Sirius radion 88 NFL channel you can hear PSU next OL coach, Paul Alexander (not 'Ro's buddy)

I knew they did in the NFL, I thought it trickled down to NCAA, but I guess not.
you may be correct, I am not sure if they implanted these changes or not...but if so they have....
https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/football-practice-guidelines-updated
ey changes to the recommendations include:
Preseason:
  • Discontinue two-a-day practices. (A second session may include walkthroughs or meetings but no helmets, pads or conditioning.)
  • Extend the preseason by one week.
  • Reduce live tackling or thud practices from four to three a week.
  • Ensure three noncontact or minimal contact practices per week.
  • Ensure noncontact or minimal contact practices are held the day after a scrimmage.
  • Implement one day per week without practice.
In season:
  • Permit only one live contact tackling practice per week.
  • Permit only one live contact thud practice per week.
  • Implement three or more noncontact or minimal contact practices per week.
Postseason:
  • If more than two weeks elapse between the final regular-season or conference championship game and a bowl or postseason game, then allow up to three practices per week of live contact (including two thud); add three days of noncontact or minimal contact practices per week; and ensure the day preceding and after live contact tackling practices should be noncontact or minimal contact.
Spring season:
Hold a noncontact or minimal contact practice every day after a live scrimmage.

some of these are just noise or what most teams did anyway, but you can go full in the spring. (with a day off)
