Northwestern Game Thread

Very difficult to beat a team three times.
This is a few years old, but...

According to STATS LLC., there have been 981 similar matchups across Division I college basketball over the past 10 seasons. The teams entering the third game 2-0 are a combined 710-271 (.724 winning percentage) in the third meeting.

Good stat...it would be interesting to see how many of those situations involved the lower ranked team having won the first two games and how they did in the third game

I'm sure a ton. It's pretty meaningless without context, but good to refute that old myth about how tough it is to beat a team three times (a poster elsewhere has said "you know what's even tougher, beating a team that beat you twice").

I expect us to have a lot of trouble tomorrow, but not because we beat them twice.

Big Ten Elite 8 baby! How do you like me now!

Isn't that about where we should be honestly? For so many years, we were in the bottom of the Big 10 conference.

WE ARE.....GETTING BETTER!!!

Need to generate points in transition. I'd really like to see us turn up the pressure when we go small. At the other end, Josh just isn't comfortable at the high post.
Why do you think PSU passes the ball around the perimeter so much?

I would like to see quicker moves to the basket and kicking the ball out when the defense collapses.

Low-risk way to probe and wait for something to open up...we attack a zone more off the dribble and I can guarantee we turn it over more than the 5 times we did tonight. Based on our personnel without Mike, really think the way to beat the sagging zone they threw at us is make those open 3s and make them pay on the boards. We did enough of both to win.

In the end, even though we only scored 65 tonight, we scored 1.12/possession which is good (it was a brutally slow pace). Especially with our awful 9-32 inside the arc.

What is dead on hilarious is reading these threads after the game is over knowing how it played out. If you didn't know the results and stumbled on these first dozen or so posts, you'd think we'd be down at least 20 at the half.

There wasn't much posting early. The early posts in this thread were while NW was on a 15-3 run

Like he said, VERY difficult.

78% of online stats are made up.

Maybe that's because at the time the posts are made the eventual outcome seems highly unlikely.

It wasn’t as if we were playing a juggernaut. We struggled most of the game with NW, not a good showing. If we struggled for three and a half quarters and finally squeaked one out against Akron in football, my guess is the posts wouldn’t be very positive even after we won. Let’s face it, other than Carr the team played really poorly for the majority of the game. If they play like that against OSU, it’s going to be a savage beat down.

I've read many posts here about what a good coach Chris Collins is, and most of the guys that led them to the NCAAs last year were on the court last night. They're a lot better than Akron (but with this whole myth that the B1G is terrible, people don't realize it).

That is the result of the age we live in now - it's more important to react first, then react best.

Which is also typical of this board. When we are doing something well, nobody says anything. But let the smallest little chink in our armor be exposed and the floodgates open up.

Fair--I thought the game started at 7 and turned it on around 650 so I didn't have the chance to say anything positive early. I wasn't impressed with the team yesterday, were you? was anyone? I'm glad they won...hopefully they beat Ohio State for a third time but they're going to have to play better than they did yesterday to pull that off. Need 3 more wins

The Big Ten isn't very good--we'll see that in two weeks when the NCAA tournament starts. The good news for the Big Ten is there may only be 4 Big Ten teams in it so at least the best of the conference will get a chance and the rest won't get embarrassed.

Love it. You guys continue to make my point about what a bunch of negative Nellys you are. We've got a rematch with a team that we've already beaten twice, and the only thing you can see is that "it's going to be a savage beat down".

Not exactly apples to apples without Watkins. And I said if they play like they did against NW, it will be a savage beat down. If they play better (and especially shoot better) it could be a much closer game, but I just don’t see us winning without Watkins. Not being negative, we’re just not deep enough to win without our only underneath presence against a team of that caliber.
