Ohio State - TCU game thread

Had the refs been paying attention on that end zone "touchdown" then the final score would have been 33-30

TCU finished with 300+ yards passing and 200+ yards rushing. Buckeyes have a good pass rush, but appear vulnerable in the secondary.

For me there were two glaring differences. On both the defensive and offensive lines I noticed a real size disparity, and I t was only a matter of time before fatigue became a big issue on the TCU team. The second issue was depth, I felt Ohio State had a better rotation of players. The fact that TCU was leading in this game and only lost by 12pts means that OSU can be beat by a bigger more physical team.

As I was very tired I watched a last few minutes on the mobile stream with the sky cam. Refreshingly different game perspective, no announcers, and pretty much an open mike over the team huddles.

You just nailed what's fueled their success over the last couple of decades: their depth. I read on one of their websites that they played/rotated 72 players against Oregon State and 79 against Rutgers. That early playing time is a huge advantage - especially late in the season. Thinking back to even last year, both Michigan and PSU had the sucknuts on the ropes yet they came back late in the game to win both. I truly believe that both UM and PSU can match the sucknuts starting lineup - it's the next wave of very capable players that makes the difference. Frustrating, but...…..

I thought that was a really impressive win to go do that on the road against a quality opponent.

It's all about depth. Frankin talks about this all the time. Games like this are always won at the LOS, so if you can rotate 3 deep at DT and DE, you wear the other guys out and you win.

So it starts with recruiting, you get those 4 stars and 5 stars who can play early, you assess who doesn't need a redshirt year and you put them in the rotation.

Ohio State has been recruiting at this level for 20-25 years. PSU has been recruiting at that level for 2 years, so it's still a work in progress.

News flash: In a safety it is the Defensive tean that gets the 2 points not the offensive team. So it would have been 35-28 not 33-30.Also after a safety OSU would have gotten the ball not TCU and I may be mistaken but I believe that TCU scored their frst on the next possession. So you can coulda woulda shoulda all you want.

The fact is the the officiating from that ACC crew was horrible for both sides.

Yep, and if you go to the OSU boards, you'll see whining about the officiating. It gets old BY ALL FAN BASES. I thought the officiating was fairly consistent for both sides. Those harping about officiating favoring OSU: it was in Texas and ACC officials. Give it a rest

Giving an OSU fan perspective. OSU is beatable in a single game, just like any team. The inconsistency in DB and linebacker play has us concerned, so you guys are in the mark there. TCU played a great game. They threw the kitchen sink with a lot of creativity both offensively and defensively, and the tempo and smaller quicker Frog players had the Bucks on their heels. They took a high risk high reward strategy which they had to, because playing straight up OSU wins on talent. The high risk high reward was exactly that for TCU, as it kept the game close, and eventually burned them. Their QB Robinson is the real deal and I could see him being a major star in college football. Reminds me of a few years ago when a little known Buffalo LB shredded OSU. People questioned OSU but as it turns out, Khalil Mack was just damn good. In the end though, OSU did what good teams do- find a way to win. The PSU-OSU should be like many of their games recently a tough fought hell of a game.

I thought the officiating was consistently horrible for both sides. Lots of pushing, grabbing, and holding in the secondary that did not get called. My guess is that it hurt TCU more than it did OSU. But, one could easily see how depth ultimately took control of the game. The better overall team won.

What I don't like about officiating like this is that no one knows where to draw the line. What is a penalty and what is not a penalty? How do you coach the DBs and WRs? We've had this issue with offensive holding in the B1G for a long time, where it has seemed that Ohio State has clearly benefited from bias. Once you make the line fuzzy, personal bias/favoritism takes over instinctively.

So, I am concerned that OSU will continue this sort of aggressive play in the secondary and, if it doesn't get called, it will disadvantage most of our receivers. It will make getting separation more difficult. Receiver speed and QB mobility are our primary advantages among the various match-ups. We're not going to beat them at the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball.
