Oklahoma State vs Iowa Discussion Thread

What did Gable say?
not a whole lot. He went on as a Cyclone vs OkSt, the rivalry, talked about being afraid when seeing OkSt license plates, talked about his book, etc. Same Gable... but added to that Iowa video where UNI, Iowas St., and Iowa were all in the bar for the pre-season mtg... I had enough. Met the man in person when I was 16. Legend of wrestling

Strange thing is in a dual Iowa our easiest challenge as I think the only weights they win is 125 and possibly Hwt. Their strengths are where we are better which hurts them in a dual

Could be true... but they don't quit at any weight .. will need to stay away from a bad day (flu, long bus ride) the match can be close...

Match at home. I can’t see any way in the world they beat our big 5. So that’s 5 with bonus. Lee dominates their 141, Keener better than their 33, Shak or Cassar beats Wilcke. Which of those results can you see going in Iowa’s favor?

I thought about including Lehigh and NCST as possible mentions and there are plenty of talented wrestlers on each team to warrant their mention. I just kind of figured neither generally wrestles as a team to that level once NCAAs start, so until proven otherwise I left them out and stuck to the three I think will battle for those 3 spots behind PSU and the Nut team.

Got a delayed viewing of the match after I returned from the lopsided Lehigh/Navy match. I heard two hilarious things on the broadcast. One, that OkState was "expecting bonus points from Heil". Seriously, who would ever "expect" bonus points from Heil? Two, Heil is their leader. If your leader gives a flat, lackluster performance like that in an important dual, you are getting no effective leadership.

Awful job by Heil.
It appeared none of the OSU coaches would even acknowledge/look at him when he came off the mat.

This is absolutely not true. I read the following on HR, so it's veracity is beyond reproach:

125 - Stickley beats Schnupp (this was before Kuhn came aboard, which probably doesn't matter)
133 - Spencer Lee bumps up and beats Keener (actually an interesting idea)
141 - Happel is the "clear favorite" over Nick Lee (I like that one)
149 - PSU win
157 - PSU win (decision only)
165 - Marinelli over Joseph
174 - PSU win
184 - PD3 over Nickal
197 - Wilke over whoever PSU puts out there
285 - Stoll over Nickal (not unreasonable)

So, as you can see, it actually could get ugly for PSU.

If Michigan continues to wrestle the way they did Friday night I could see them finishing 3rd at NCAAs.

What. Wrestle with tenacity while they lose. Not a good formula for finishing high.;)

Just having fun. They did wrestle tough, but i have a tough time picturing the blue and maize finishing third. Good run and they finish with 80 points. I do not believe that gets you to third this year.

I'm not doubting but you can't put it in the bank. We've all seen upsets happen. Look at the scuffle. Some close matches that a TD could swing the match, a catch for a fall, not even getting in the top 8. Never say never.

I actually think Schnupp could win that match.
A true freshman gem with a protected knee that will weigh in around 125 is going to bump up to 133 to wrestle a 24 year-old man. This shyt is why it is so easy to make fun of the goofballs.
141 Lee in BJC runs circles around whatever the hawks put out there.
149 is there any reason to believe Zain doesn't get a pin here?
157 Jason will run circles around Kemerer.
165 I understand the excitement over Marinelli. He is pretty good. However, to beat Joseph he will need to probably score 4 takedowns. 4 shots is a two match max.
174 Mark probably just to hear the cheers will cement the kid.
184 Bo bonuses whoever Iowa runs out there.
197 is a toss-up.
Hwt sadly is an Iowa favorite.

If everything were to go Iowa's way
PSU 25 Iowa 11

Just got home had to drive back in a dam snow strom.
Just my thoughts on the meet.
125. Was surprised that he could get ridden like he did.
Needs mat work. Still love this guy.
133. What we have..Sad
141. Same as 133..
149. Finally wrestled and showed what he should do as SR..
157. Again surprised Kem should have major or better but still this guy.
165. Match we need and Alex came through like this kid should improve.
174..He is what he is, wish Bowman could go down but don't think he could handle the cut.
184. Really like Bowman has improved a lot another match we needed. He camedto wrestle.
197.Didn't like thought he was coming along.. Weak weight class could maybe get 7-8th.
Hwt..Stoll has improved looked moved better with the big brace off..He pushed the action and took more shots than the Okl boy.
Over all was a good match Hawks have lots of work to do sad to say coming from a long Hawk supporter be glad to get 3rd place. Most likely my Hawkey friends who come here be upset with me. I just have to be realistic.
One thing I have to agree with you guys that Reff was bad bad and for both teams..
A win is a win gladly take it.

What did Gable say?

A couple fun things from the Gable interview: He took a shot at Iowa and Oklahoma State, saying that he is used to the rivalry when they are both ranked #1 and #2 instead of #3 and #7. Secondly, he admitted what HR posters have never done, which is to say that Iowa fans are jealous of Penn State and Ohio State. FUN!

If they pull murin shirt I think its an immediate upgrade at 141 and I think he is a 2-2 guy which is not a slight at all for a true freshman.

I'm still wondering what they'll do with Fix, Piccininni, and Brock. Piccininni and Brock are both RS Soph. I guess with Heil graduating there is some flexibility of movement into 141, but Kaden Gfeller, who is redshirting this year, was undefeated in high school, and while redshirting his only loses are to Jaydin Eierman (twice), Dean Heil, and Kevin Jack, and all were by decision (plus, he pinned Nick Lee at the Scuffle). As such, he seems like the guy who will be at 141 next season for the Pokes.

My guess is:

125: Piccininni
133: Fix
141: Brock
Gfeller goes to 149.

Max is going to be a very solid college wrestler. IMO probably better than most normal wrestling fans and geeks believe.
However, he is not going to finish in the Top 8 at 141 this year. He isn't going to make the blood round. He isn't going to win in the PSU nor OSU duals.

In other words, other than being an improvement over what they have there now he is not going to help them win anything over and above what they are going to win now other than maybe the Michigan dual.

I'd think so. Zain may get bonus against Sorensen, but expecting a pin would be expecting a lot.
The last meeting was a typical Zain pin with a stamp of brutality. This meeting is going to be Zain's last 16,000 BJC meet. I could be wrong, but I will surprised if it doesn't end with a hand slapping the mat.

Retherford vs Sorensen has run the gamut...a TB decision, a 4-0 decision, a 10-1 Major, and a Fall, all in favor of Zain. I personally believe a Fall is the second most likely result, after a Decision, the next time they wrestle.

This^^. Marin needs a redshirt year. Right now he's maybe better than anyone else Iowa has at 141, but not a lot better. As you say, he's unlikely o help win the tOSU or PSU duals, and he's not going to score more than a couple points (tops) at NCAAs. Maybe he helps in the UM dual. Maybe.

So, overall, I don't understand why Iowa would be willing to burn Murin's redshirt.

I think there is a lot of internal (coaches put on themselves) and external pressure (fanbase, admin, gable) being applied to the program. A new building is in the works, and new contracts signed for staff are not publicly helped if the team is battling for a place in the top 10. Which is where they would be without Spencer, PDIII and now maybe murin.

being top 10 is not a good look for a program that has admitted issues with recruiting. its not a good look for a team with maybe the most rabid fan base in the sport. I cant find anywhere saying the match yesterday was a sellout for Iowa, thats not good if true.

So the murin thing in my mind is more about going all in this year to hide years of recruiting and development issues.

Announced attendance 13,485.

Don't know if that was butts in seats or the old Phillies trick of sold tickets, still a big number.

BTN said it was a 'near capacity crowd'.. some prime time empty seats in the front rows!

It appeared none of the OSU coaches would even acknowledge/look at him when he came off the mat.

It reminded me of a Kyle Dake performance at one of the Grapple at the Garden events. If Dake had pinned his opponent (a very much lesser one), Cornell could have pulled out a dual. They need his pin to have that chance. He didn't even try (at least it didn't look like he was pressing for one) - he wrestled a Dake match. Cornell lost the dual.

Re: attendance -- it sure sounded like a sizeable crowd and an energetic atmosphere. I'm sure it is a blast to wrestle there (when winning).

at the beginning of the match you can see a whole section empty. But I think that is the same section that was empty their last match and it was said that is the student section, which I dont believe are back.

13k is great no matter how you stack them.

Taking jabs at the attendance again? Come on fellas! Bitterly cold with snow and 2nd semester classes haven't started yet. You do the math. MSU gets like 200-300 people to watch their duals. How rough is that? 13k saw a pretty good Iowa beatdown of Oklahoma State. If i wasn't working out of town i would have been there with my usual crew. Dang jobs and responsibilities!
