Oklahoma State vs Iowa Discussion Thread

It was Terry with the back touch. Smith already had a bench warning. After that he walked to the scorers table and shouted god knows what across the mat. I don't agree with the point deduction but it has happened before in Stillwater. 2 teams with 57 national championships butting heads. Sparks are flying, no doubt about it. Respect that

Why can't you just admit Iowa should have had a point deducted for that and that it wasn't because it's in CHA?

Tom, your expectations are unreasonably high for Gibbons and Johnson.

THIS.
They have been tough to listen to as a fan of the sport, even when watching impartially. Can't believe they're the best BTN can come up with.

I know it’s HWT but i hate watching Stoll. We’ve been gifted with some athletic get after it heavyweights the last couple of years and still just pushes and waits for you to shoot

Feel sorry for poor Daton Fix. It's a lot of weight to put on the young man's shoulders to change the entire culture of this unmotivated, uninspired bunch.

I'm still wondering what they'll do with Fix, Piccininni, and Brock. Piccininni and Brock are both RS Soph. I guess with Heil graduating there is some flexibility of movement into 141, but Kaden Gfeller, who is redshirting this year, was undefeated in high school, and while redshirting his only loses are to Jaydin Eierman (twice), Dean Heil, and Kevin Jack, and all were by decision (plus, he pinned Nick Lee at the Scuffle). As such, he seems like the guy who will be at 141 next season for the Pokes.

If this Lewallen is a better option than Martinez, then Gfeller might have a path to 149.

I don't remember what he looked like (in terms of size) at the Scuffle. He's wrestled 24 matches so far this redshirt season (talk about getting after it -- that is a true freshman that is redshirting, and all took place by 1/2/18), all at 141. If 149 were the plan for him, you'd think he'd have wrestled some matches at that weight.

In one of the more recent FRL episodes Willie mentioned that the OSU plan was to move Brock up to 141 next year.

Maybe we watched a different match but White is an "athletic heavyweight" and Stoll attacked way more than him.

I assumed Brands was referring to Lee's rather lethargic 3rd period. I won't use the "g" word.

Brands comments about Spencer surprised me. The time between weigh-ins and the start of a match in college is 1 hour. In HS, it's also 1 hour, but typically the JV and V are weighed in at the same time, and the JV wrestle first (not always) so for V the time between weigh-ins and the start of the match is usually 2 hours.

Most of the issues that arise for wrestlers after weigh-ins have to do with eating too much.

I have no idea what Brands was alluding to, but my suspicion is that it has to do with eating too much, or eating the wrong thing, after weigh-ins. Spencer has been wrestling for many years, so I'm surprised that's even an issue for him. Then again, a lot of those years he was cutting little or no weight, so perhaps his experience with this issue is rather limited.

much appreciated. I've kind of gotten out of the habit of listening to FRL. I'll have to work that back into my schedule.

My impressions was that Iowa much better than I thought and did a good job and won all the ones they were supposed to and pulled a couple upsets. Iowa fans have to be pleased with this performance.

Lee did his thing, yes he gassed a little but their was never any doubt as he controlled a good wrestler.
Sorensen A+. How many times do we watch him wrestle like Heil when his team needs points.
Good match for Maranelli. He’s moving up the pecking order but he not close to a title contender. I was never a big Chandler Rodgers fan.
Bowman good match pulling out a big win as underdog
Wilcke is rd 12 at best so I wasn’t expecting more and I don’t care what his ranking is. Shak will eat his lunch and Cassar will beat him in a controlled 6-3 match
Stoll impressed me. He’s a big guy that wrestles Big and has some nice movement. I know a lot here say all he does is push, but this boy can move. Derick white no slouch either. I hope I’m wrong but right now I have Stoll favored over Big Nick

Okie State is just uninspiring to me. I felt scraped by Wyoming and NC State and was happy to see Iowa take it to them

I think Iowa will end up #3 this year without downey

Coming into the year I thought Iowa would stink. Not the case. Credit to Iowa and the Brands.

In the BTN interview Brands seemed to imply it wasn't as much Lee being a big 125 but more a refueling thing like you said.

OK state doesn't look to be in great shape. I thought every Iowa kid fought hard and to the end. They're sound wrestlers. Surprised Kem was slowed down. Lee looks a bit vulnerable and might get horsed by some.
Gable was babbling (hate to say that) at the break and still throwing jabs... he should be above it all.... Brands was thinking hard during his interview...

What did Gable say?

You're dead on right. He DOES move well for his size, very well, in fact, and what seems like "pushing" is pushing the action and always trying to work into one of his famous upper body ties or locks. When he sets it, good night.

Heil is so LAME! His team needs bonus points and he takes one shot the entire second period. Pitiful.

Got a delayed viewing of the match after I returned from the lopsided Lehigh/Navy match. I heard two hilarious things on the broadcast. One, that OkState was "expecting bonus points from Heil". Seriously, who would ever "expect" bonus points from Heil? Two, Heil is their leader. If your leader gives a flat, lackluster performance like that in an important dual, you are getting no effective leadership.

Awful job by Heil.

Matter..did Bernstein/Kutler wrestle? Who won? Any recap on that match

Did Preisch go or is he still out?

133 – Nick Farro (Lehigh) dec. Cody Trybus (Navy) 7-4
141 – Luke Karam (Lehigh) Fall Nicholas Gil (Navy) 3:21
149 – Cortlandt Schuyler (Lehigh) dec. Jared Prince (Navy) 8-6
157 – Ian Brown (Lehigh) dec. Zack Davis (Navy) 7-3
165 – Gordon Wolf (Lehigh) dec. Drew Daniels (Navy) 7-2
174 – Jordan Kutler (Lehigh) major dec. A.J. Alford (Navy) 11-3
184 – Michael Coleman (Navy) dec. Andrew Price (Lehigh) 5-1
197 – Jake Jakobsen (Lehigh) dec. Steban Cervantes (Navy) 6-1
285 – Christian Colucci (Lehigh) dec. Austin Faunce (Navy) 2-0
Attendance –1,394
Official – Kevin Neville

Sorry. Was catching up on PSU/MSU. As Tom's summary shows, no Bernstein and no Preisch. Also, no Wood. I think Santoro gave Colucci a chance to wrestle against a subpar opponent. Prince looked pretty hobbled by a knee injury at 149 - nowhere near 100%.

With no Parker or Preisch, Lehigh looks a lot weaker, as should be expected. Still, not really a competitive match at the Snake Pit today. This was one of my two "throw-ins" from Penn State package and worth about what I paid. Kutler looked so-so against the Navy backup. Cruz was hovering near a major decision before the late pin. Overall, a little uninspiring, but then again, I am spoiled.

Picking on Iowa is fun, but generally speaking Iowa is always going to be pretty good.
Brands has a pretty solid record and it isn't just because he gets lucky all the time.
I was much more impressed with their wrestling today than I was by anything in the Midlands.

With that said, while Iowa is certainly in the conversation for 3rd at nationals that high a finish is no way a given. Smith will have his guys ready by March, and Michigan has a lot of team points in their lineup.

I imagine 3 through 5 will be Iowa, Michigan and Okie State, but none favored over the other two.

Still impressed me at the Midlands and again today. He isn't ever going to have a go to shot, but unlike past years when he simply pushed he is wrestling this year with an attitude and his push and dig style is something he is using to beat on his opponent as well as to score.
If Nick is going to beat Stoll, Nick needs to pick his game up quite a bit. Right now Stoll beats Nick.

If Lehigh can get Preisch and Parker back (not informed as to their status), I think Lehigh could be included in that company and maybe NC State also. I was decidedly unimpressed by Oklahoma State.
