Burned cornea gate? What's with this?
Both of them got injured looking at a Sterilaser used to clean mats. Sounded pretty bad. They had a falling out after that as they recuperated.

As someone who had a tear in his cornea and dealt with on and off extreme pain/discomfort for almost 18 months before getting surgery, I’m sure it was no joke until they healed up. When my pain would spike, it was excruciating until my eye teared up enough to moisten the cornea.

Reading it is started laughing, then I read your second paragraph. Not a joke. Sucks.

Dude - it was due to one moment of carelessness. A broken tree branch was suspended above my ex-wife’s walkway. I saw it and told her I’d get it down. She told me to do it later, but I insisted - saying, “you know how I hate chores - take advantage of my motivation”. I yanked it and something (seed pod, acorn, piece of branch) hit me square in the eye. Annoyed me at first (like pinkeye) and then just got worse. Tried things like contacts for weeks/months to help cornea heal, but it just kept retearing - like a scab. Often it would retear at night, early morning because that’s when your eyes are very dry - eyelid would just rub up against cornea. Wearing safety glasses (like a dork) and I save myself 18 months of sporadic agony. If this happened more than about 40 years ago, I might have been incapacitated forever. I finally bit the bullet and got a procedure done (superficial keratectomy) - 5-10 minutes and it was magic. Had to have a contact in for about a month to shield cornea from eyelid while it healed, but it’s back to normal though some days I might need to use eye drops for minor irritation.

Anyway, sounds like those guys stared a bit too long at the laser light and learned a short-term but valuable lesson.

Basically it means they sunburned their Cornea with the UV light from the sterilizers. As one who has seen the effects......imagine a really bad sunburn. Now imagine it inside your head where no cream or spray can help. Very painful. They were lucky. If you sunburn your skin too badly.....the skin dies and peels off. Do that to your Cornea and you lose your sight. Strong UV light is not to be messed with. And.....NO......it cannot be used to kill Covid or any other virus inside your body without killing you.

Ok alright I'm done this isn't a pow camp...crap...leave my eyes alone.

Also the main reason I ask is because of the  gate, sounds like "water gate" or deflate gate, wasnt sure.

Oh I know. All good. Willie on one of his solo podcasts back when it happened told his story - he’s pretty old school as you can guess and gutted it out. The funny thing was how unsympathetic he was to poor Corby who was a bit more shook up. I believe they generally have made up.

Sounds like their issues healed up without intervention, but, yeah, I’m sure they were scared for a bit and dealt with some agonizing pain that not much can heal except time - just like any sunburn you can’t put aloe on.

I never thought you were making fun of me. I was just trying to explain what happened to Corby and Willie. Also.....I was not the one who suffered the eye issues. One was a friend who didn't use the correct darkness of welding shield for the temperature of his welding. The other was a student who was looking at the Sun through her telescope when the Solar filter shattered. Even that brief amount was enough to damage her right eye.
Public Service Announcement: As someone who has spent a lot of time with telescopes.........Never use a Solar Filter that connects to the eyepiece of a telescope. You are filtering the light AFTER it has been magnified many times. Imagine how fast you can burn an ant with a 100X power magnifying glass. That same intense light can crack a cheap Solar filter that has a tiny nick or scratch. That is what happened to my student. Solar filters that attach where the light is entering the telescope are much, much safer. They filter the light before it is magnified......much simpler and safer. Your Welcome :)

Thx for the PSA. Now please attach video of what happens to an ant with 100X power magnifying glass.

Living in Texas you develop a hate/hate relationship with fire ants and enjoy anything that brings about their suffering and death.

It is a terrible pain and scary especially the first time you get it.
There is no way to describe how it feels.

Agreed. We have them here in North Carolina. Found out the hard way. Was working underneath a car and they got me. Burning them is more fun but a better way I found is to dissolve as much sugar as you can in about 16 oz. of water. Add in a teaspoon or two of Borax. Place about an ounce or so in a small container (I use a small cat food can). I place it near the nest and then stomp on it. They come out and eat the sugary food. It will kill them but hopefully not before they take the food to the Queen. It works on all ants. Good luck

I saw they still used them at nationals this year lol

Yeah; my buddy and I were taking about that. Would you rather wrestle on something a disgusting mop sloshed over, or 50 guys’ sweat that a light zapped?

Does it have to be a choice? why not skip the UV light theater and just keep wrestling. Does a second or two of UV really sanitize much at all?

It definitely was no fun and I have permanent damage to my left eye and light sensitivity in both.

They work great for their intended purpose. As long as they are aimed at the floor....you are fine. I have a UV vacuum.......kills fleas in carpets. I am not going to stare at the bottom while it is on :)
Apparently Willie and his cohort were down there inspecting the bottom lol

Eye pain is no joke. Got blinded welding when my self darkening hood didn't work. Excruciating pain and a migraine. Many times I'll get scale or slag of of a hot shoe while forging. The steel is hot so it sticks to your cornea. Usually, I can get it out with a Q-tip. One time I couldn't, and had to have my doc get it out with a needle. Instant relief once it was out. However, rhe 3 days it was in was like having a rock in my eye. Constantly crying, ungodly pain, and zero sleep.

No, farriers don't wear safety glasses. They fog up too much to work on a horse.

Now the name makes sense

It’s fantastic theater that basically does nothing.

But, they already spent the money on them🤷🏼‍♂️
I agree. If they would walk much slower I might be inclined to think it might kill some stuff.......but at the pace they are pushing those things I have a hard time believing it's doing much of anything except as you wrote providing "fantastic theater".

During the pandemic I noticed a coworker using a cellphone sterilization kit that used UV light technology and the phone had to be in that thing for 10 minutes or more. Granted the COVID virus is a more stubborn and resistant virus, but those UV brooms have contact with the mat surface for a second or less. I can't believe those magic brooms are doing much of anything. I hope between sessions they gave the mats a good old fashion mop with a disinfectant.

It can. Intensity and exposure time differ for each species of mat bug
Can you send me a link to some data on this to quench my curiosity? My searchs have only found HVAC that might be comparable but is used for mold and shoe inserts that are supposed to be used for 45 minutes. tia.

Have you ever tried racquetball safety glasses and a headband to control any sweat coming off your head? When I played racquetball using this set-up I never had my glasses fog up, and I sweated profusely.

Carter is the Penn State wrestling equivalent of Chet Parlavecchio.

Chet had an unbelievable mouth. You would never think Joe Paterno would put up with it, but what he did was use it to his advantage. Specifically, Chet famously called out Pitt in 1981. "Pitt's played that tough schedule: Rutgers, Temple, and Thiel. Now they're going to play a real football game." 🤣

It worked! Pitt was totally pissed and Jackie Sherill tried to grab Chet in the 1st quarter!

48-14! Considering just how good Pitt was, in my educated opinion this was the most impressive single game performance ever, rivaled only by the unreal demolition Kansas State did to an excellent Oklahoma team in 03.
yea and Pitt was leading 14-0 ooops

One time I was at a race track when a sprint car got loose out of turn 4 and hit the front wall HARD. Bent one of the poles supporting a light fixture. Red flag to weld that thing. Two rednecks next to me: "Let's go down and watch em weld!" I thought they were joking but down they went. Pennsylvania!

My wife and I have horses. I was always interested in how people work with ferrering or horses in general. Wonderful animals
Did anyone else see that wrestling movie where Steve Carrell plays Du Pont? His mother derides wrestling as a sport for the lowly, says he should take on the family passion for horses. Carrell says, "All they do is eat and ***t! Eat and ***t! Eat and ***t!" I like horses but it made me laugh.
