Penn State NIL news

My dad taught me how to hunt and fish. My uncle, who is 1000X the sportsman my dad is, taught me a ton more. My uncle taught me bow hunting.

A friend taught me basics of fly fishing. A lot I picked up on my own or learned from talking to other fly fishermen.

Trout Unlimited taught me basics of fly tying. YouTube taught me a ton. And a local fly shop owner really honed my tying skills.

I got too many expensive hobbies.
Finished my project deadline by lunch, emailed my client. Took the afternoon off.

Overcast. Cool. No wind.
The blue wing olive hatch this afternoon was insane. River boiled with trout for two steady hours.

I have to sneak back out there tomorrow or Wednesday. 🤪

Here you go, Mike:

This was the day Lar & Son took the reigns. I’m not sure how many inches the binder has grown since it debuted at 3”, but a gap appears to be widening again with just a year left on Lar’s contract. And the natives are going from restless to MIA.

That LumbeeIndian character was pretty spot-on. 🤔

But this is a good read if you want to catch up on some history. Weak, non-evidence-based accusations from posters like Don and WWDM are why tHR became such a target over the years. Ironically, WWDM shed so many tears over “PSU trolls” that he had to retreat to a safe space where, presumably, he can constantly hint at PSU improprieties without being called out for absence of actual evidence.
So, Larry provided Tom some intel on what other programs were using in the recruiting game against them……big deal. I would have offered it as well had o had that type of detailed information. And if I’m a head coach, I’d certainly want to hear it and try and figure out what I can do better to make my program better. Just as I’m sure your guy would want to do.

There’s a lot wrong in this thread, and that’s the least of the problems!

You’re right — a little info behind the scenes wouldn’t be a big deal. But Tom blew this up into a public spectacle of Gold Intel and Thick Binders. To him, the revelation was clearly a big deal. It shouldn’t have been. I actually a felt a little embarrassed for him.

And.....it was a continuing thing for Tom as the same binder came up again just this past season. Several years after the initial discussion.

Eerily around the same time as Tom aserted that online persons were paid to attack his program.

Interesting. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in those conversations. Just as I’m sure anybody here would be as well.

what I know is that there is always far more to a story than what is portrayed, written, told. And in this industry, I learned a very long time ago, that the best stories are the ones you can’t ever tell!

I tried for a couple months about 10-15 yrs ago . . . just didn’t hook me.
😉
I can relate. I tried watching Hockey on TV...but it was probably more than 10 years ago. What made me a new die-hard fan ?:
1. When I first got a 70" High Definition TV.......at about the same time as they started making the rinks the same.....and more importantly....making the "Boards" smooth and consistent. There was a time when banking a pass off the boards was less than a crapshoot. Now we get to see the skill of these guys on bigger rinks with consistent boards.....all in high definition. Tipping in goals. Amazing bank passes. Their skill level is off the charts and my enjoyment of watching has gone up 10 fold. Seriously....give it another chance. :)

What river are you fishing? We're building a new camp in Potter, so it's been the First Fork of the Sinnemahoning for me.

It's been a bit of a tough year so far for me on dries. Just can't seem to time a good hatch with rising trout. I live for it once they start. Im psychotically relentless on rising trout. Everything else is just passing time. It's Christmas time for me in May and June. March browns and Sulphurs are coming, followed by the drakes. Add in the yellow and green sallies as a bonus.

I did ok this past weekend on a tan caddis crippled emerger followed by a wet caddis. I was unofficially guiding for some friends so I could have done better. But they were my sort of guests and I tried to put them on fish. I showed them trout and they showed me my next beer. Good times with good friends. I'll pass on a few fish for getting them fish any day. Tight lines.

Slushy is right. Anyway, you don't find it at least a little strange that a coach with as many years into his job has no idea how other programs are recruiting against him? Wtf...does he not talk to his kids? Brands acted like what Larry was telling him was new information...Like it was all some sorta new revelations to help him now be able to compete in the recruiting game. And then to freely admit he had no idea about any of it... in an interview that the public will see? I'm like slushy...my face was red for him.

My guess is only some of it was new information, guys. There’s always a new tactic, new twist, new turn, in how things are being done. In the recruitment of Spencer Lee, who everybody wanted, there were sure to be some new things that came up and were discussed. The concept is not that difficult to understand. Everybody needs to quit being a conspiracy theorist and realize most of things you see and hear, are in fact, exactly what you saw and heard.

I've always felt similarly about the Brands' recruiting revelation that he should target guys with a lot of athleticism and upside over grinders/"system guys".

Maybe I'm oversimplifying it, but I just don't know how that needs to be explained to a high-level coach.

I don’t think you’re oversimplifying it at all. The problem is coaches tend to recruit to their style.

i’ll give you an example personally. When I fish I tend to be the guy that wants to be in 3 feet of water flipping and pitching. That’s my strength. When the fish are cooperating I do pretty well. When they’re not I tend to want to make them cooperate and I don’t do well. So, even at the ripe old age of 59, I’m taking this year off from tournaments fishing full-time, and I am working on parts of me that I know needed work. Deep water. Different techniques. You either adapt, or you die.

History is full of coaches who didn’t adapt.

Also, if you ask me...I think the Brands need to reevaluate the way they recruit. It's either laziness or they take for granted that they are Iowa and will get the kids they need to compete... not sure which it is.

There is no way in hell a coach at one of the top programs in country shouldn't at least take a flyer on the #1 pfp in the country. Even if you don't think he will end up being a good fit, you at least take a look and find out. Totally blew my mind when John said Iowa never even contacted Aaron Brooks. If I were an Iowa fan I'd be a it pissed. Brands crying about thinking he had Nolf.. lol. Cael was relentless in stealing him away. Brands should put that in his 3 inch binder. Bottom line, Tom should have been relentless in trying to nab AB.

Tom needs shut up about people spreading negative things about himself and his program. He brings it upon himself. He should consider himself lucky his own fans aren't complaining about him and things he does or doesn't do..

Ok cool...fair enough. And let me say this too, I'm just like you and most other Hawk fans, I hope Tom is coaching them for many many many years... :)

See above

Cael is from a little different generation of coaching, a bit younger. He has a different perspective.

then refer back to the above.

Me to. Cause he is still one of the few guys coaching that can keep it competitive on a national level. We should feel fortunate. Either one of them could be hit by a bus tomorrow…..

then what?

We trust but verify

Name one thing that isn't rigged. College wrestling is about the only thing that is somewhat pure. Current events prove your last sentence to be false. My opinion.

My personal opinion, but there is no good spin that can be put on this Brands/Lee saga.

Ahhhh, the sulphurs.
I learned to fly fish during my time as a grad student at Penn State - would do my research on campus, then head down to Spring Creek for the sulphur hatch. So consistent all thru May.

That was many moons ago, but I still have close friends who fish Penns & the Little J, weekly.

I’m “out West” now, with trout water everywhere & my drift boat in my front yard.

Blue wings now.
Caddis any day.
Then run off.
After runoff, we get salmon flies, golden stones, caddis - then a full month of hoppers + ants.
You can move 40, 50+ cutthroat a day with hopper + ant dries (if you know where to go 😉

Good luck w/ your camp!

Crazy 1st game. Maybe there will be a sweep.
Crazy that the Pens only committed one penalty in six periods of hockey, yeah!

Game was pretty memorable. Bad ice definitely played a factor in prolonging the game, with no one able to settle a pass. It was practically a street hockey game at times. Rangers will be fine though, I liked what I saw from the youngsters, and Panarin et al will put it together. Lindgren being evidently hurt is a problem for all the heavy minutes he eats up. Kakko was pushed, btw, game should've ended right there.

Even Mark Messier agreed with the goalie interference call. Lindgren almost decapitated Rakell. Karma.

Seems complex to a non- fisherman. Are you guys doing this in 220?

I had no idea you could decapitate someone by putting your shoulder through their chest. That was as tough a hit as any I've seen this year, but 100% legal. The refs felt too embarrassed to undo a major entirely but it wasn't even a two-minute penalty.
