Penn State NIL news

Seems complex to a non- fisherman. Are you guys doing this in 220?

Fly fishing isn't that hard to become "decent" - it's just that the aquatic insects have a bunch of sizes, shapes, names, and only pop up around specific times of year.

Use this hopper fly mostly anywhere in the west in summer, cast towards the soft water along the banks of a stream in a valley or mountains, away from too many people, and you'll catch some trout.

It's as complex as you want to make it.

Ahhhh, the sulphurs.
I learned to fly fish during my time as a grad student at Penn State - would do my research on campus, then head down to Spring Creek for the sulphur hatch. So consistent all thru May.

That was many moons ago, but I still have close friends who fish Penns & the Little J, weekly.

I’m “out West” now, with trout water everywhere & my drift boat in my front yard.

Blue wings now.
Caddis any day.
Then run off.
After runoff, we get salmon flies, golden stones, caddis - then a full month of hoppers + ants.
You can move 40, 50+ cutthroat a day with hopper + ant dries (if you know where to go 😉

Good luck w/ your camp!
Remind me what state, pup?

Most adult aquatic insects have unique characteristics. Caddis have no tail and 1 set of wings. Just match color and size. Mayflies have long tails and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Stoneflies have 2 sets of wings and have a short tail. Most are very much time of day, time of year dependent. It's really not that hard once you start spending time on a stream.

And, if you just want to catch trout you can get away without knowing anything material about those things and still catch the “dumb” ones, and I’m not just talking about recently stocked fish. Matching what the fish are feeding on is as much angler judgment as it is reality. If I drift four patterns over a feeding trout without a rise, then the fifth pattern (say a #14 Royal Wulff) draws a rise, it certainly doesn’t mean that fly matched the hatch better than the first four.

Fly fishing is a delivery method. You still have to know within a moderate radius where the fish are to be found, and what range of things will trigger them to strike.

I havent gotten up since the mentor weekend due to kids sports....

But anyone with the time to get up to Pine should.

Also next week is the Upper Pine Trout Derby. Loads of fish. Cash prizes. Hopefully good weather.

Be careful what you hold onto! I’ve been trying to get the cesspool to lighten up for about a year. What’s in the past, is in the past.

If we are being honest the lightening up is because this board has for the most part observed the ceasefire and greatly respects your olive branch with JTS.

And lar and lars "reported" shenanigans are only a month old. So I'm not sure what your definition of past is.

Also just because we haven't merged 2 RBY threads into a single thread doesn't mean we have gone soft around here.

As Cael would say, I'm grateful to live in SW Montana.
We flyfish from February thru Thanksgiving, and it's phenomenal.
My best fishing buddy out here is another PSU grad, born & raised in Latrobe.
Fair number of PSU / PA folks relocated out here - you'd be surprised.

I grew up & lived in PA & the east for 20+ years.

I'll never move back east. F that.
Northern Rocky Mountains - so many outdoor pursuits, not too crowded (aside from Denver/Boulder), and no humidity. No concrete jungle, no traffic, low crime, clean rivers, wild trout, zillions of trails, tons of public land to hike or hunt, mountains at 360 degrees, dry powder to ski, insane views everywhere you look.

I work for myself out of my house in t-shirt & gym shorts, have design projects in 4-5 different states, including PA. I do just fine. I'm very grateful.

You guys can have the NorthEast and keep it. The northeast is a shitshow. 🤣

Have you ever landed 50+ trout over 20" in one day on flies? There are some redeeming qualities of the Northeast.;)

I fished Upper Elk & 20-mile in Erie every once in awhile when I'm back in PA to visit family.
I've fished Salmon River & Oak Orchard in NY.

I've seen 500+ fisherman at Walnut Creek, zero fisherman in the Montana backcountry, and a lot in between.

We all have our likes & dislikes.

And yes, you can catch 50 trout 20-inches or larger on flies on the Missouri River near Helena, MT, downstream from Holter Dam ;) ... just need a buddy w/ a jet boat.

The best spots are the "B-list" creeks and small rivers that you never read about in the magazines.
All those squiggly little blue lines on the state atlas.
Can fish all damn day, never see a soul, and the number of trout you move on dry flies on the 1st cast is only limited to how far upstream you want to hike that day.
