PSU - Army Dual Thread

I would love to see Mark Hall at 174 and Cassar at 197....That is a VERY SOLID line up....97 will be a good wrestle off with Cassar and clutch....Raseed could be very dangerous at 74 too...He pins a lot of guys...BONUS....
Don't think we need hall to win NCAA, just happy that jimmy wrestled well and really looking for him to close out his career with an AA. As for 197 very happy with Matt and if healthy he will AA

I agree that we are fully capable of winning the title without Hall. Still, it would be a tight battle with probably 3 other teams. WITH Hall, barring injuries, we'd be a prohibitive favorite to win it all.

You can say that all you want, and many others have also, but that doesn't make it a fact and that is especially true this early in the season. I've said it before and I'll say it again there is ZERO reason to bring Hall out of redshirt this early in the season, which is why Cael, etal have not done so.

Agreed. No reason to burn the shirt EARLY in the season. However, would love to see him burn it later on. :)

I was lucky enough to see the match live last night. A few impressions from a kind of a novice fan.

Suriano - Very focused, intense, and lightning fast. Really excited to see him vs Schram on Sunday. Hunch is he wins and announces himself as one of the top 3 or 4 title contenders as a true freshman.

Cortez - Maybe a bit hesitant on his feet but once on top, he was a beast. Really great to see him wrestle so well.

Gulibon - A lot of fire out of Jimmy yesterday. Fantastic to see against a quality opponent who was much longer than him. If he wrestles like this in March, he'll AA.

Zain - Was Zain. His opponent really wanted nothing to do with him and just played D the entire match. I'm guessing Zain will see a lot of that approach this season.

Nolf- Unreal. Parsons is really good and I could see him AAing this year. Brilliant reversal by Nolf seemed to stun Parsons and the end was near.

Morelli - Nothing new to report.

Nickal - HOLY S***! Army kid didn't know what hit him. On a mission. I'll pencil in a Dean-Nickal final right now.

Cutch - Tough match. Army kid was 6 to 8 inches taller. Cutch will certainly give up height this year but not often 8 inches. Cutch is a strong mofo.

Nevills - So nice to see him healthy. The Army kid appeared undersized. Also excited to see Nevills v Butler on Sunday.

WE ARE!!!

I might have been most impressed with Jimmy's aggressiveness.

He was aggressive most of the match. Got out of bottom lightening fast. Hit some impressive takedowns. And broke the kid in the 3rd. Against a Top 20, Top 15 capable kid.

Jimmy has AA talent. Jimmy can and will AA if he puts his mind to it.

Joseph & Suriano are monsters. It'll be fun watching them develop over the year.

Do we get a 2nd trophy for margin of victory?

Ha! Let's just say this: without Hall we could absolutely win it all. We could also absolutely lose it. Just as likely.

With Hall, if healthy, chances of winning it all go up tremendously.

Realize I'm a new poster but long time reader of these boards, I feel the margin of us winning isn't as close as a lot of folks think. I really see 10 AA on this team, yes I am a fan and been called irrrational.

The reason I said that was that Flo's preseason rankings, for what they're worth, when rolled up to the team level would've had PSU as a very close #2..

That did not account for bonus points, and CP cited that when ranking PSU the #1 team anyway.

It also did not account for Nick Suriano, since Flo did not rank true freshmen.

Did not account for 197, since Mouse had not yet even wrestled off for 184 at that time.

And Flo was admittedly conservative on Cortez, Cenzo, and Nevills since they didn't have a lot from last year to go on them.

Some things could happen -- maybe Bo doesn't win the title over Dean, or maybe someone else slips along the way. But there's already some margin built in -- barring injury.

I hear you, Jefe. What if I posed it to you this way?
Barring injuries of course, without Hall let's say we have a 60% chance of winning a national title. With Hall we have a 95% chance of winning a national title.
Is burning his redshirt worth the additional 35% chance of victory to you? I'm not talking about margin of victory, I'm talking about likelihood of a victory. What do you think?

Ok ok. I'll let it go. I'll just take JohnDoe not being around as a win. GO BO!
On the other hand, had you told a Rutgers transfer joke...

How about if I proposed more accurate numbers. Without Hall our chances of winning are 95% and with Hall they are 96%. Are you willing to risk that 1% for what Hall can contribute as a 5th year senior?

We win 45-0 and we're talking panic? And debasing every promise Cael makes to recruits?
Shut up, take a laxative, watch the match tomorrow, and relax. No more Hall talk please, it's boring and unproductive.

Your my/our kind of fan. Your not alone in your prognostication either.

Giving those numbers, no. However, with as good as Iowa, Oklahoma State and Ohio State are this year, we are not 95% to win right now. But we can quibble on that one. Remember Clinton was between 75% and 89% to win and look what happened there.

No one is panicking, merely having a discussion. And as far as the Hall talk, I'll discuss whatever I like, thank you. I don't need your permission.

You actually typed shut up? Seriously? It might behoove you to be a little less arrogant and obnoxious in your next post, but that's your decision as well. Maybe that's just who you are.

Nova beat me to it, and it's not 60%. This is an academic point. Cael said multiple times he's shirting Hall, thus must believe his team will win the title, and so there's no reason to expect anything else.

Every year fans want Cael to pull someone's shirt, and every year he disappoints by merely winning the national title.

That Cael, always a disappointment! Luckily we've got NittanyChris here to teach him how to coach AND to fix his personality.

Umm, yeah. So raising a point for discussion now means I don't trust Cael's coaching or decision-making?

Nice straw man argument, but you have to be a moron not to see straight through it. Hey fine material, I thought you were only obnoxious and rude on the Iowa board? I'm finding out it's a natural skill you spread everywhere.

different subject.... loved the play by play announcer calling out the "downs and ups" the wrestlers were doing (lowering their level...). Also liked the "body slam move" he called out when Nolf executed his double leg. The helmet was a classic. Poor 'color' guy kept having to correct the guy...

I was watching it with my son. We had some good laughs.

Jake Varner, took over Frank's spot. Looks weird in a suit, right?
He looks good. What jumps out is that even in a small, out-of-focus part of the photo, Varner's cauliflower ear looks like it has cauliflower ears.

I think some of you guys are being too hard on NittanyChris. Penn State is not the clear favorite like last year; they are co favorites with 3 other teams that are fully capable of winning the championship. I get that everyone is excited to see all the young talent on the mat and winning big, but it was Army. If we shut out Stanford then yea, the rest of the wrestling world is in serious trouble, but if the dual goes by current rankings and they lose 4 matches then all of a sudden the thought of pulling Hall's redshirt may not be so crazy.

…….and for the record I am not predicting 4 losses. I think Nevills wins for sure and one of the other 3 pulls out a win.

Ah gee dad, come on, I almost have him apoplectic. He's even weeping on the Iowa board. Let me poke him one more time!

I agree with most of what you said. However, NittanyChris and MANY others are expecting way to much out of Hall as a true frosh, especially without having seen him yet against one college wrestler. On hand you caution us about being excited about all of our young talent but OTOH Hall puts us over the top at NCAAs. WAY to early to make that assumption.

For the sake of discussion Nova Lion, Mark Hall beat Jason Nolf twice earlier this year to make the World Junior team. Although that was a different style wrestling, think about how phenomenal Jason Nolf is, and then tell me again that Mark Hall would not be at least top 4 at NCAAs this year.

Jason Nolf is at 157 and Hall is at 174. I have no idea where Hall would or could finish at NCAAs and neither do you. Top 4 is quite possible but so is R12.
