The PRC
South Dakota State

After losing Bono to Wisconsin, the Jackrabbits ran off a cliff last season. South Dakota State only qualified one wrestler and got zero points at the 2019 NCAA Championships compared to placing 12th with 42 points in 2018. In addition to losing Seth Gross to injury, SDSU lost 5 other starters due to graduation and transfer between 2018 and 2019. The Jackrabbits finished with a 3-10 dual record (wins against Utah Valley, Oregon State and West Virginia) and placed 10th out of 12 (ahead of Air Force and Northern Colorado) in the Big 12 conference championships.

While South Dakota State has now also lost Seth Gross to transfer, they should improve this season compared to last season. After all, it would be difficult to do worse. The Jackrabbits return nine starters from last season but there will most likely be several new wrestlers in the lineup. The preeminent new starter will be Tanner Sloan who had a great redshirt freshman season and should be an immediate AA contender. South Dakota State has not yet released its 19/20 schedule.

125
Danny Vega (Jr) <Ironwood Ridge, AZ>

Vega transferred in from Iowa State and should improve SDSU’s results at this weight. He didn’t wrestle last season. Gregory Coapstick (So) was a true freshman starter had a rough season going 3-21 and 0-2 in the Big 12 Championships.

133
Rylee Molitor (So) <Sartell-St. Stephan, MN>
Zach Price (Fr) <Johnston, IA>

Molitor had a tough season filling in for Seth Gross, going 5-15 and 0-2 in the Big 12 Championships. Wrestlestat has Zach Price listed at 133 so maybe someone has some inside information that he’s dropping down. Price went 21-8 at 141 during his redshirt season mostly against lower division wrestlers. He didn’t have any victories against NCAA qualifiers.

141
Clay Carlson (Fr) <Willmar, MN>
Aric Williams (So) <TF Riggs, SD>

Clay Carlson went 30-5 as a redshirt last season. He didn’t have any wins against NCAA qualifiers. Aric Williams, like Molitor, was a redshirt freshman and also had a tough season, going 8-19 and 0-2 in the Big 12 Championships.

149
Henry Pohlmeyer (Sr) <Johnston, IA>

SDSU’s only qualifier last season, Pohlmeyer went 21-15 overall and placed 5th at the Big 12 Championships (7 allocations). He went 0-2 in the tournament from the 22 seed. <Bonus: 22.2%, RPI: .592>

157
Colton Carlson (Jr) <Willmar, MN>

Carlson went 12-14 on the year and 2-2 at the Big 12 Championships. He did have one win against a NCAA qualifier, upsetting Hunter Willits (Ore St). <Bonus: 19.2%, RPI: .539>

165
Kenny O’Neil (Fr) <Prior Lake, MN>
Tanner Cook (Fr) <Ilion, NY>

O’Neil went 28-13 as a redshirt last season. He didn’t have any wins against NCAA qualifiers. Tanner Cook went 6-3 at 149 and 157 with the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club last season. Outgoing senior Logan Peterson went 14-17 and 0-2 at the Big 12 Championships last season.

174
Samuel Grove (So) <Moorhead, MN>
Garret Jordan (Jr) <St. Paris Graham, OH>

Another freshman starter, another tough season. Grove went 5-19 and 0-2 at the Big 12 Championships. Jordan went 1-4 in limited action last season.

184
Zach Carlson (Jr) <K-M-S, MN>

Carlson went 22-9 but it wasn’t enough to qualify for the tournament as he went 1-2 and didn’t place at the Big 12 Championships (5 allocations). He didn’t have any wins against NCAA qualifiers (7 of his 9 losses were to qualifiers). <Bonus: 32.3%, RPI: .587>

197
Tanner Sloan (Fr) <Alburnett, IA>

Sloan comes off an excellent redshirt season and should be an AA contender this season. He went 24-2 in his redshirt year with some big wins against eventual AAs, Jacob Warnerov (Iowa) by tech fall and Josh Hokit (Fresno St). His losses were to Patrick Brucki (Prince) and Dylan Anderson (Minny). He pinned Anderson in a rematch later in the season. <Bonus: 69.2%, RPI: .682>
Last season Martin Mueller (Sr) went 7-13 and 0-2 at the Big 12 Championships.

Heavy
Blake Wolters (So) <Pipestone Area, MN>

Wolters went 13-20 and placed 8th at the Big 12 Championships (6 allocations). He didn’t have any wins against qualifiers. Wolters did beat (but not pin) Deuce Rachal (Illini). <Bonus: 6.1%, RPI: .503>

New Faces
South Dakota State has three top-20 (in weight class) incoming freshmen:

Cade DeVos <Southeast Polk, IA>
DeVos is a two-time Iowa state champion at 160 in 2019 and 145 in 2018. He also placed 2nd at 132 in 2017. DeVos won the 2019 Fargo freestyle championship at 160. He’s ranked #10 at 160 by InterMat.

Cade King <Owatonna, MN>
King won the Minnesota AAA state championship at 182 in 2018 and finished 2nd at 182 in 2019. He’s ranked #20 at 182 by InterMat.

Spencer Trenary <Clarion-Goldfield, IA>
Trenary won the Iowa 2A state championship at 285 in 2019 and placed 2nd in 2018. He’s ranked #5 at 285 by InterMat.

141-Clay Carlson and Zach Price had nice redshirt year’s as well. One of the two is likely the starter next season. The other eventually mans 149.

125-Connor Brown followed Bono and then left Bono. Their other 125 option got hurt so Coapstick was the only option. Danny Vega transferred in from Iowa State. Will be an improvement.

They have Devos from IA coming in for the 157/165 range, a top 100 heavyweight, King from mn for 184. Which will be a good influx of talent.

Star recruits of last year’s class included Peyton Robb(switch to Nebraska) and Alex Lloyd(never competed/not listed on roster) and both appear to be out of the picture now.

Thanks for the added info

No team has fallen as far as the Jackrabbits from 2018 to 2019. SDSU placed 12th with 42 points in 2018 and only qualified one wrestler and got 0 points in 2019. Of course part of this was due to the season ending injury to Seth Gross. In addition to Gross, SDSU lost 5 other starters due to graduation and transfer between 2018 and 2019. Losing Bono to Wisconsin probably didn’t help either.

The Jackrabbits finished with a 3-10 dual record (wins against Utah Valley, Oregon State and West Virginia) and placed 10th in the Big 12 conference championships.

125 – Gregory Coapstick (Fr)

Coapstick had a rough true freshman year going 3-21.

133 – Rylee Molitor (Fr)

Molitor also had a tough year filling in for Seth Gross, going 5-15.

141 – Aric Williams (Fr)

Williams, like Molitor, was a redshirt freshman and also had a tough season, going 8-19.

149 – Henry Pohlmeyer (Jr)

SDSU’s only qualifier, Pohlmeyer went 21-15 overall. He went 0-2 in the tournament from the 22 seed.

157 – Colton Carlson (So)

Carlson went 12-14 on the year. He did have one win against a NCAA qualifier, upsetting Hunter Willits (Oregon St).

165 – Logan Peterson (Sr)

Peterson went 14-17 and also had one win versus a qualifier (Kiussis – WVU).

174 – Samuel Grove (Fr)

Another freshman starter, another tough season. Grove went 5-19.

184 – Zach Carlson (Jr)

Carlson went 22-9 but it wasn’t enough to qualify for the tournament. He didn’t have any wins against qualifiers (7 of his 9 loses were to qualifiers).

197 – Martin Mueller (Jr)

Mueller went 7-13 but did have a couple of wins against qualifiers. The big story at 197 for the Jackrabbits was Tanner Sloan. He went 24-2 in his redshirt freshman year with some big wins against eventual AAs, Jacob Warnerov (Iowa) and Josh Hokit (Fresno St). His loses were to Brucki and Dylan Anderson (Minny).

Heavy – Blake Wolters (So)

Wolters went 13-20. He didn’t have any wins against qualifiers. Wolters did beat (but not pin) Deuce Rachal.

Does anyone know what happened to Alex Lloyd? Kid is super tough and would be a big addition to that lineup. Wonder if he transferred somewhere or maybe hung them up? I’d like to see him show back up somewhere

I was just a Division 2 AA taking 3rd back in 2001. Kid I lost to was from SDSU. He was a 2 time national champion. When they were at the division 2 level they were always good as a team and had some really great individuals. Great to see the school bump to division 1 though. Wrestling is big in that area it seems. Absolutely loved seeing the crowds and support they got during Bono’s last season. I really hope Hahn can keep it going. I think he will. Seems like a great coach.
