Thread to follow PSU recruits at PA States

Sasso-Pletcher video here: http://highschoolsports.lehighvalle...owdown/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Looks as though the penalty point was for a 2nd period head scissors on a scramble. Technically true, but still an awful way to decide the de facto state final. Sasso's ankles crossed momentarily. However, his legs were very split, with his knees pointing outward and absolutely no attempt to apply pressure on Pletcher's head.

I would love to get Sasso at PSU. He is a super wrestler and will dominate Plutcher when he is wrseling for Ohio State. In our room he will get even better !!!! Should have beat him today and i think he is 2 years younger.

Pretty darn close.

The ref gave the signal for an illegal hold.

He pointed to it to see if the assistant ref concurred, and then whistled to stop the action.

The illegal hold was a straight head scissors. Some head scissors are allowed, which is why I'm saying your explanation was pretty darn close, but not totally correct. The straight scissors, even if an arm is included, is always illegal. As soon as Sasso crossed his ankles, the move went from being legal to being illegal.

Not disputing the illegality. Just pointing out that Sasso never attempted to use it, nor was he close to attempting to use it, so the call can be both correct and a crappy way for him to lose the state title. Plus it let Pletcher go into shutdown mode ...

Anyway: Sasso 18-5 in consolations.

AA semis underway.

Charlie Lenox (Ft. LeBoeuf) dec Jalin Hankerson (Boiling Springs) 3-2.

Faris Messai (Jamestown) MD Angelo Barberio (Muncy) 12-2.

Wow, Matthews and Courtney...what a freakin' match! Great scrambling and high intensity. Courtney with a 5 pt. move in the 3rd to win 9-3. I thought he had Matthews stacked before that.

126:
Brian Courtney (Athens) dec Cole Matthews (Reynolds) 9-3 on a 3rd period takedown to his back, has now beaten 2 state champs in the same day by a combined 17-6. Gets a standing ovation from the crowd.

Max Murin (Central Cambria) dec Lindenmuth 7-1. Murin is the returning 113-lb champ.

If Courtney wins tomorrow, undisputed OW!

I would think so ... can't ignore Teasdale and Gavin Hoffman both on pace to tech the field, and the 182 final between Geer and Bulsak ... but, yeah, he should be OW if he beats Murin as well. Not every year you see a guy beat 3 state champs in one tourney.

Courtney is a JR. I don't think we're after him, but you never know ... If he looks like he can go 141 and doesn't conflict with Nick Lee ... Tim may know more than this, but I suspect he's taking a long hard look at Cornell. It's probably the closest D1 program to his home, and he works out with Yianni.

Who knows how he will grow, but 133 after Cortez could be an option too. He's just been tough as nails the matches I've watched him. Great conditioning, always looking to score...seems to be a wrestler in the Penn State mold.

138:
Mickey Phillippi (Derry) dec Chase Anklam (Pen Argyl) 10-3.

Cole Wetzel (Boiling Springs) MD Cole Aaron (Brookville) 17-4. Wetzel is a 3x Maryland state placer.

I would hope 133 after Cortez is not an option. That would mean we didn't get Spencer Lee, or more specifically Suriano got hurt.

James Duffy (Smethport) dec Seth Baney (Huntingdon) 5-2.

Mike Carr (South Fayette) MFF Caleb Clymer (NW Lehigh). Carr is the returning 138 champ, next year He Be Illin'.

This may be one the best runs in piaa history.

Anybody got a better one of the top of your heads?
Closest I got offhand is Spearman a couple years ago ... but I don't think those were all champs he beat.

Or: Quentin Wright beating Ed Ruth and then anybody else.

152:
Damon Greenwald (Burrell) dec Nate Newberry (Biglerville) 5-1 SV.

Giovonne Sanders (Jeannette) dec Nick Monico (Saegertown) 3-2. An upset, Monico is headed to Kent State next year.

160:
Louie Head (Eisenhower) dec Braden Fochtman (Berlin) 5-0.

Jake Wentzel (South Park) dec Austin Farabaugh (Penn Cambria) 7-0. Wentzel is the returning 152 champ, headed to Pitt.

170:
Anthony Walters (Westmont Hilltop) dec Cody Mulligan (Saegertown) 3-1.

Jacob Oliver (Huntingdon) dec Anthony Welsh (Beth Center) 8-5. Oliver is a returning state finalist.

182:
Garrett Hoffman (Montoursville) dec Dakota Geer (Franklin) 3-1 SV. Hoffman is good, but this is still a significant upset. Geer is the defending champ, was very impressive last year at Hershey, ranked #1 or #2 in the country, headed to Edinboro. Hoffman is a multiple placer headed to Bucknell.

Greg Bulsak (South Park) dec Luke Funck (N. Lebanon) 5-2. Bulsak is the returning 170 champ, nationally ranked, headed to Clarion.

Teasdale and Spencer are very good friend...I really pray and hope Cael is going after Teasdale, He is only a Soph. Spencer wants him at PSU..They hang out and wrestle all the time at club...Spencer will not stay at 125 for 3 years. Probably 2....

195:
Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville) dec Blake Reynolds (Greenville) 5-4 TB.

Bill Bowlen (Jefferson Morgan) dec Connor Frey (Lehighton) 3-1. Frey is headed to ODU.

I neglected to point out earlier that Willie's cousin (or nephew; can't remember) advanced to the Class AAA 152 semis, where he'll take on Cole Karam, of Becahi.

220:
Josiah Jones (Westmont Hilltop) dec Joseph Gladish (Allentown Central Catholic) 3-1 SV.

Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt) dec Ethan Budd (Port Allegany) 5-4.

285:
Jake Beistel (Southmoreland) dec Brylee Shumaker (Redbank Valley) 5-3. Beistel is a returning finalist and is nationally ranked.

Zach Stafford (Cambridge Springs) WBF Alexander Nicholas (Salisbury Twp) 5:56.

If Jimmy wins the state title, Willie might promote him to brother.

Seriously, Jimmy has already beaten Karam 3x in the past month: 3-0 in the dual, 6-0 at D11s, 4-1 at NE Regionals.

Lehigh and Army are the programs I've most recently heard mentioned. I'll have to see if anything's changed after this weekend..

That'll probably be it for me for a while. Might check in tomorrow morning but am headed back to D4 for my sister's big milestone birthday. Ironically, am stopping at Hershey briefly to get her gift ... but that's as long as we can stop there. Am hoping to catch the late night replay of both AA and AAA finals ... and maybe The Boss can drive back on Sunday. (Right.)

Good work, El-Jefe. Thanks

Can't help myself, one more update:

Lindenmuth lost to Gabriel 4-3 in the consolation semis. He'll face Tanner Altobelli (Redbank Valley) tomorrow afternoon for 5th. Altobelli beat him at the dual and at Districts, 5-3 each time.
