Shocked that Tony Dungy made the HOF so I looked at his bio. Besides being the first African American HC to win a Super Bowl (when Colts beat Bears), I do not believe his record deserves the HOF. Does being the first African American HC to win a SB earn a spot in the HOF?
Outside of that accomplishment, he had a nice overall record, but he did win just that one SB. IMO, his career was more about disappointment in the playoffs than anything else. TB released him and hired Gruden because they felt Gruden would get them over the hump after disappointing finishes. Then how many years did the Colts have the #1 overall seed and home field advantage in the playoffs, just to lose. He accumulated that nice overall record as the recipient of the HC who was coaching the team with Peyton manning in his prime. Were all those 12 and 13 win regular seasons of the Colts due to Dungy's coaching, or because of Peyton Manning??
If HOF qualifications now mean any coach who won just a single SB, then I guess we'll see guys like Brian Billick, Jon Gruden, John Harbaugh .... in the HOF in a few years.
